Patent number: 5712981Abstract: A network analysis method is applied to traffic data collected in respect of a network of the type comprising a plurality of logical segments each with a plurality of nodes. The method involves processing the traffic data by preferentially removing traffic associated with nodes identified as acting as global servers, and using the remaining traffic to identify nodes acting as local servers. Upon the local servers being identified, the network analysis method carries out further processing to make suggestions as to whether any of these local servers should be moved to another logical segment and as to whether it would be worthwhile splitting a segment between two associated local servers.Type: GrantFiled: June 20, 1996Date of Patent: January 27, 1998Assignee: Hewlett-Packard CompanyInventors: Neil H. Patent number: 5711677Abstract: A multi-functional I/O card guide snap mounts to a mother board and houses a slidably removable I/O card for interfacing the I/O card with the mother board. The card guide includes a snap mountable daughter card for bridging the connection between the I/O card and the mother board. The card guide serves as a guide for accurately and easily slidably interfacing the I/O card with the daughter card, and serves as a connector for interfacing the I/O card and daughter card with the mother board. The card guide provides alignment accuracy between the I/O card and the interfacing daughter card connector because of a short tolerance path therebetween and inherent coplanar accuracy. Advantageously, no custom parts are required like conventional high rise connectors, and no extra mounting space or hardware is required like conventional backplane connector systems.Type: GrantFiled: January 11, 1996Date of Patent: January 27, 1998Assignee: Hewlett-Packard CompanyInventors: Paul K. Patent number: 5712745Abstract: A magnetic tape drive having a motor with a magnetically shielded cavity or hole in one cover of the motor providing additional room for movement of a magnetic head. The cavity eliminates a mechanical interference problem, enabling direct drive of a roller (puck) combined with short overall drive height. In motors having an internal stator, some of the stator poles are eliminated and a magnetically shielded cavity is provided in the area where the stator poles are eliminated. In motors having an external stator, no stator modification is required and a shielded cavity provides access into an open area of the rotor. In addition, for motors having an external stator and sufficient magnetic shielding, a simple hole in one cover of the motor may be sufficient rather than a magnetically shielded cavity.Type: GrantFiled: April 29, 1996Date of Patent: January 27, 1998Assignee: Hewlett-Packard CompanyInventors: Kenneth G. Patent number: 5712612Abstract: A tunneling ferrimagnetic magnetoresistive sensor that has a .DELTA.R/R greater than that of known magnetoresistive sensors, and that, with appropriate electrode materials, can undergo a substantial change in resistance in response to a magnetic field in the intensity range of 10s of Oe, which is typical of the intensity of the magnetic fields encountered in magnetic recording media such as discs and tapes. The tunneling ferrimagnetic magnetoresistive sensor is composed of a stack of thin-film layers that include a layer of a ferrimagnetic material, a layer of a magnetic material, and a layer of an insulator interposed between the layer of the ferrimagnetic material and the layer of the magnetic material. The ferrimagnetic material is conductive. The magnetic material is also conductive and has a coercivity substantially different from that of the ferrimagnetic material.Type: GrantFiled: January 2, 1996Date of Patent: January 27, 1998Assignee: Hewlett-Packard CompanyInventors: Gregory S. Patent number: 5712668Abstract: A rotary capping system services inkjet printheads in an inkjet printing mechanism. A rotary service station has a tumbler with a dual pivoting link that supports a cap platform. The cap platform is gimbal mounted to the link and spring-biased away from the tumbler. The platform has an extending arm that contacts the printhead carriage to align the cap and printhead. When the printhead is positioned for capping, rotation of the tumbler around an axis parallel to the printhead scanning direction brings the platform arm into contact with the carriage. Continued rotation of the tumbler pivots the link and the platform to sweep the cap through a non-linear, generally arcuate path into a capping position at the printhead. The illustrated cap has a multi-ridge lip for sealing over surface irregularities on the printhead nozzle face. A method of sealing inkier printhead nozzles is also provided.Type: GrantFiled: January 31, 1995Date of Patent: January 27, 1998Assignee: Hewlett-Packard CompanyInventors: William S. Osborne, Bret K. Patent number: 5710827Abstract: Methods and apparatus generate, and use in printing, a dither matrix that incorporates a vivid-response function, that follows a generally S-shaped response curve. Printing with this pregenerated dither cell is just as fast as with a conventional cell, but printed color has a slightly exaggerated vividness, more pleasing to most users than more-accurately reproduced color. Color printed with this curve alone, however, is found unsatisfactorily dark; the invention also encompasses including in the overall response another function to lighten the colors--particularly at the low end of the brightness range. We define both functions as so-called "gamma functions", but with different arguments and exponents, and construct the S-shaped curve as two separate sections blended at a generally central point. Preferably the argument of the first (low-brightness) section is an expression that is proportional to an input color signal; the function raises this argument to a power greater than unity (ideally 1.6).Type: GrantFiled: October 31, 1995Date of Patent: January 20, 1998Assignee: Hewlett-Packard CompanyInventors: Alexander Perumal, Jr., Qian Lin

Patent number: 5709481Abstract: A roll-feed apparatus which is removably attached to a printer/plotter that has a self-alignment feature. Media, such as paper, vellum or film is pulled through the printer/plotter. However, a back-tension is created in the roll-feed apparatus by creating a pre-determined force on the shaft to which a roll of media is mounted. By increasing the force on the shaft, frictional drag is induced impeding the shaft's rotation. It has been found that the rotational impedance, in conjunction with the pull of the printer/plotter, corrects any misalignment of the media in approximately six meters of media run.Type: GrantFiled: April 29, 1996Date of Patent: January 20, 1998Assignee: Hewlett-Packard CompanyInventors: Antonio Hinojosa, Richard Lewis

Patent number: 5710757Abstract: An electronic device is disclosed which processes wireless information having address data and message data. The electronic device, such as a computer equipped with a receiver card or other device capable of receiving wireless information, receives the wireless information. The electronic device sets a decoding rate to be an address rate, then reads the address data at the address rate. The device then determines that the address data matches an address of the electronic device. The device then adjusts the decoding rate to be a message rate different than the address rate, where the message rate corresponds to the address. This technique allows the information service provider to transmit, and the electronic device to process, different types of messages at different rates.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 1995Date of Patent: January 20, 1998Assignee: Hewlett Packard CompanyInventor: Gregory J. Patent number: 5710879Abstract: A quadrilateral is divided into two triangles so that each of the two triangles may then be filled by a triangle fill scan converter. Additionally, the vertices of a triangle are sorted to generate inputs to a fill scan converter. A circuit combines the functions of dividing the quadrilateral into triangles and generating the plane equations for the triangle fill scan converter. Accordingly, similar operations which are performed for both triangles of the quadrilateral may be shared between the plane equations for the two triangles. A circuit also combines the functions of generating the plane equations for any one triangle with automatic sorting of the triangle vertices.Type: GrantFiled: June 8, 1995Date of Patent: January 20, 1998Assignee: Hewlett-Packard CompanyInventor: Jon L. Patent number: 5710748Abstract: An optical disk drive system having a means for detecting off-track conditions with high reliability under conditions causing the objective lens to deviate from optimal focus, such as in the presence of external mechanical shocks. As the lens travels out of focus, the ability to resolve features decreases due to the lose of image contrast, causing a loss of tracking error signal (TES) gain. A digital signal processor (DSP) compensates for this loss by continuously determining an adjustable TES threshold representing the same desired percentage off track and same percentage of TES amplitude. A straight line approximation of this ideal adjustable threshold is used as a threshold to determine if the beam is within the desired amount off track. Alternatively, the DSP amplifies the TES by an amplification function to maintain the TES at a constant value while the objective lens travels out of focus. The TES amplification function is a straight line approximation of an ideal amplification function.Type: GrantFiled: July 19, 1995Date of Patent: January 20, 1998Assignee: Hewlett-Packard CompanyInventor: Gregory V. Patent number: 5710581Abstract: A method and apparatus clears blocked nozzles in an inkjet primer printhead by placing the printhead in a position relative to a service station such that ink which is expelled from the nozzles is captured without reaching the medium upon which printing is to occur. Ink is expelled for a first time segment from each nozzle in a first pattern for a number of nozzle expulsions. Following the first time segment, a pause period is entered. Following the pause, ink is expelled in a second time segment from each nozzle in a second pattern for a second number of nozzle expulsions before the printer enters the print status mode.Type: GrantFiled: July 29, 1994Date of Patent: January 20, 1998Assignee: Hewlett-Packard CompanyInventors: Earl L. Patent number: 5710881Abstract: In a shared memory multiprocessing computer system, multiple processors can cache copies of a shared data block in their local cache memories and independently modify their cached copies. The cached copies are later merged in a global memory with the shared data block. With each cached copy, a bitmask consisting of a plurality of flags associated with elements of the cached copy also is stored in the local memories. A local memory controller tracks which elements of the cached copies are modified by setting the bitmask flags associated with such elements. When merging, only modified elements of the cached copies are stored in the originating data block as indicated by the bitmask flags.Type: GrantFiled: November 25, 1996Date of Patent: January 20, 1998Assignee: Hewlett Packard CompanyInventors: Rajiiv Gupta, Alan H. Patent number: 5709381Abstract: A paper tray assembly for a computer controlled printer has an angled paper discharge wall and a paper stack skewer which automatically urges the leading edges of each sheet of paper in the stack against the slanted wall as the paper tray is inserted into a tray receiving slot in the printer. The reason for doing this automatic skewing is to prevent paper misfeeds. Optionally, paper length and paper width adjusting slides are used with the automatic paper stack skewer being pivotally affixed to a length adjustment slide, if used. The skewer is operated by interengaging cams and followers which are actuated as the paper tray is inserted into or removed from a tray receiving slot in the printer.Type: GrantFiled: November 22, 1996Date of Patent: January 20, 1998Assignee: Hewlett-Packard CompanyInventors: Arjang Hourtash, William H. Patent number: 5709359Abstract: A pair of equipment brackets is disclosed which facilitates mounting electrical equipment and the like in an equipment rack or cabinet. Each bracket attaches to the side panels of the electrical equipment and a portion of the bracket extends outward from the equipment to overlap the side rails of the equipment rack/cabinet. The overlapping portion of each bracket contains a plurality of bore holes arranged in a pattern to match the spacing of the tapped bores in the side rails. The overlapping portion of each bracket also contains a semi-circular slot located at the bottom edge of the bracket. The purpose of the slot in each bracket is to receive a mounting screw partially inserted into the equipment rack. When two such screws are partially inserted into the equipment rack, one on each side at the desired location for mounting the electrical equipment, the overlapping portion of each bracket can be slid down the rack so that the slots receive the screw shaft.Type: GrantFiled: September 29, 1995Date of Patent: January 20, 1998Assignee: Hewlett-Packard CompanyInventor: Richard F. Patent number: 5707282Abstract: A cooling system for electronic component cases is disclosed. The system includes a fan diffuser located between the exhaust fan and the exhaust grill formed in an exterior wall of the case. The diffuser allows the grill to vary in both size and shape from the fan, thus allowing the grill footprint to differ from that of the fan. This arrangement allows the grill size to be optimized, taking advantage of the available space on the case wall. The diffuser also allows components to be located between the fan and the case wall portion where the grill is located.Type: GrantFiled: February 28, 1996Date of Patent: January 13, 1998Assignee: Hewlett-Packard CompanyInventors: Brad E. Patent number: 5708715Abstract: An integrated circuit device (chip) has lock circuitry that controls operational enablement of a functional block of the chip. To unlock the lock circuitry, a "chip-key" must be supplied to the chip over a secure communications link, the chip-key being communicated in encrypted form and then decrypted in a secure communication block of the chip. To prevent internal examination of the chip revealing the chip key, the latter is not stored as such in the chip. Instead, only a signature of the chip-key is stored, the latter being formed from the chip-key by subjecting the latter to a one-way function. The chip-key input to the lock circuitry is subjected to the same one-way function in block before being compared with the stored chip-key in comparator; if a match is found, a gating circuit is enabled to pass a necessary signal (such as a clock signal) to the functional block.Type: GrantFiled: April 30, 1996Date of Patent: January 13, 1998Assignee: Hewlett-Packard CompanyInventor: Dominique Vicard

Patent number: 5708732Abstract: Downsampling and inverse motion compensation are performed on compressed domain representations for video. By directly manipulating the compressed domain representation instead of the spatial domain representation, computational complexity is significantly reduced. For downsampling, the compressed stream is processed in the compressed (DCT) domain without explicit decompression and spatial domain downsampling so that the resulting compressed stream corresponds to a scaled down image, ensuring that the resulting compressed stream conforms to the standard syntax of 8.times.8 DCT matrices. For typical data sets, this approach of downsampling in the compressed domain results in computation savings around 80% compared with traditional spatial domain methods for downsampling from compressed data. For inverse motion compensation, motion compensated compressed video is converted into a sequence of DCT domain blocks corresponding to the spatial domain blocks in the current picture alone.Type: GrantFiled: March 6, 1996Date of Patent: January 13, 1998Assignee: Hewlett-Packard CompanyInventors: Neri Merhav, Vasudev Bhaskaran
