  • Patent number: 8125386
Abstract: Antennas with steerable antenna patterns and techniques for using such antennas are described. In accordance with the invention, antenna patterns with one or more NULLs are used. Through the use of digital control signals the antenna pattern is steered so that a source of signal interference, e.g., a multipath signal, will be located in a NULL. In this manner the received signal's S/N ratio can be maximized thereby facilitating demodulation. The techniques of the invention can be applied to television, computer devices, mobile devices and a wide range of other systems. Digital commands to control an antenna may include multiple information fields, e.g., a direction field, a channel field, a gain field and a polarity field. Antennas incapable of supporting the specified fields disregard information in fields which are not supported. Information in each supported field is decoded and used to adjust the corresponding antenna characteristic.

  • Patent number: 8126050
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for implementing a reduced cost HDTV/SDTV video decoder are disclosed. The described joint video decoder is capable of decoding HDTV pictures at approximately the resolution of standard definition television pictures and can be used to decode HDTV and/or SDTV pictures. The described video decoder may be used as part of a picture-in-picture decoder circuit for providing picture-in-picture capability without providing multiple full resolution video decoders. The reduction in decoder circuit complexity is achieved through the use of a plurality of data reduction techniques including the use of a preparser, downsampling, and truncating pixel values.

  • Patent number: 7782938
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for encoding image data to facilitate subsequent insertion of local image data. Also methods and apparatus for inserting image data, e.g., at local broadcast stations, without having to fully decode a received encoded bitstream. The encoding methods involve treating images to be encoded as a plurality of distinct, non-overlapping image regions or segments for encoding purposes. Image segments which are designated for use for local data insertion are not used as reference data for motion compensated prediction purposes when generating motion vectors to represent image areas, e.g., the area representing the main picture, which are outside the local data insertion segments. Because image segments which may be replaced are not used as reference data for image segments which will not be replaced, unintentional prediction errors which might otherwise result from replacing one or more image segments as part of a local data insertion operation are avoided.

  • Patent number: 7378971
Abstract: A universal low cost radio frequency identification (RFID) tag for use with data storage discs includes an RFID chip, e.g., 2.45 GHz mu-RFID chip, coupled to a linear dipole antenna. The antenna length is reduced in length from the expected length for an optimally tuned antenna corresponding to the operating radio frequency of the RFID chip in a free space environment. The antenna is placed in the tag such as to substantially overlap disc hub area and not extend into data area. The combination of the shortened linear dipole antenna and metallization on the disc to which the tag is applied effectively form a complex antenna operational in the RFID chip's frequency range. The RFID tag works on CDs and DVDs with and without substantially metallized hub areas. The RFID tag is less 0.3 mm thick and may include: ring shape, adhesive material, spacing material achieving uniform thickness, a counterbalance provision.

  • Patent number: 7269586
Abstract: The present invention relates to analysis of large, disk resident data sets using a Patient Rule Induction Method (PRIM) in a computer system wherein a relational data table is initially received. The relational data table includes continuous attributes, discrete attributes, a matter parameter and a cost attribute. The cost attribute represents cost output values based on continuous attribute values and discrete attribute values as inputs. A hyper-rectangle is then formed which encloses a multi-dimensional space defined by the continuous attribute values and the discrete attribute values. The continuous attribute values and the discrete attribute values are represented as points within the multi-dimensional space. A plurality of points along edges of the hyper-rectangle are then removed based on an average of the cost output value from the plurality of points until a count of the points enclosed within the hyper-rectangle equals the meta parameter.

  • Patent number: 7242860
Abstract: A network is protected against interruption of service while one or more faulty switches or optical fiber transmission lines are repaired or replaced, by an interconnecting configuration of small N×N optical input/output switches, where N is 2 or greater than 2. The switches are configured among protection and working transmission lines. The small number of fibers for each switch improves repair and installation connection reliability and permits configurations that flexibly meet differing requirements. Also the fault is monitored with a fault check signal.

  • Patent number: 7234638
Abstract: A portable electronic data storage/processing device, e.g., smart card maintains an account including benefit packages. Each benefit package includes multiple items with associated quantity information. A smart card includes an account benefits interface and a retailer interface, each interface using different security measures. New benefit packages are added to the smart card through the account benefit interface by a benefit provider. Benefits debit request lists including multiple items and associated quantities are submitted to the smart card through the retailer interface. The smart card is the trusted member and checks if all requested items in quantities requested can be debited. If all requests can be fulfilled, the smart card executes the debiting from the currently valid benefit package and returns a transaction success indication to the retailer. If any of the requests of the list cannot be met, the entire request list is rejected and no debiting occurs.

  • Publication number: 20060101432
Abstract: A assembler extended instruction set architecture ISA is formed from a current ISA to which is added new instructions. Assembly of source code listing of a mixture of current and new assembly language instructions is accomplished by preprocessing the source code to create a temporary file that contains the old instructions and data directives for each of the new assembly instructions that have, as the data arguments, the object code equivalent of such new instruction. The temporary file is then applied to the old assembler to produce, for each of the old assembly language instructions, the corresponding object code. The result, after linking, is an executable, machine language program for the new ISA.

  • Patent number: 7020671
Abstract: Compressed data are decompressed using an inverse discrete cosine transform (IDCT). A first one directional (1D) IDCT is performed resulting in a plurality of first 1D IDCT coefficients followed by a second 1D IDCT resulting in a plurality of second 1D IDCT coefficients. In performing the first 1D IDCT and the second 1D IDCT a first plurality of intermediate butterfly computations are performed which include performing a plurality of intermediate multiplications resulting in a plurality of initial products and performing a plurality of intermediate additions resulting in intermediate product which are maintained at no more than 16-bits utilizing a round near positive (RNP) rounding scheme. Following the second 1D IDCT a rounding and shifting of the plurality of second 1D IDCT coefficients is performed utilizing a round away from zero (RAZ) rounding scheme resulting in a plurality of output coefficients which comply with the IEEE 1180 standard.

  • Patent number: 6944169
Abstract: A network system comprises a network of data sources interconnecting plural clients by way plural network devices. A data server achieves flexibility in its use of network resources by altering the attributes of one or more network devices along the communication channels between the data server and the plural clients. This is accomplished during the normal course of data transmissions to the plural clients, thus providing real time control over the network device attribute. The invention is particularly useful in data servers, such as a video server system, in which data transmissions are characterized by a long sequence of data packets.

  • Patent number: RE41860
Abstract: An apparatus for reducing noxious gases in the exhaust emissions of an automobile is disclosed. During engine cold start, a cold start injector having a heater downstream of the injector outlet vaporizes fuel so that a leaner air-fuel mixture can be used, thereby reducing engine emissions before the engine and catalytic converter warm up. The heater includes various configurations for swirling the fuel and exposing it to large surface areas for improving the vaporization of the fuel. A tapered bore surrounding the throttle allows for precise air flow control into the cold start device during engine warm-up.
