Abstract: This invention discloses novel membranes comprised of a blend of polyarylate and polybenzimidazole polymers. A membrane prepared from the blend of polybenzimidazole and polyarylate polymers exhibits enhanced properties over membranes prepared solely from either a polyarylate or a polybenzimidazole polymer. The addition of the polyarylate to the polybenzimidazole membrane allows the composition to be more thermally processable and less susceptible to moisture. The presence of the polybenzimidazole renders the polyarylate less reactive to solvents and increases its thermal stability. In addition, it has been surprisingly found that membranes prepared from the polybenzimidazole polyarylate blends show high regeneration capacity while retaining good flux ranges. The membranes prepared by this process exhibit good separation characteristics and provide an improved membrane with enhanced qualities over prior art membranes.

Abstract: Photoresist compositions suitable for deep UV and excimer laser lithography are disclosed that are mixtures of a photoacid and a polymer having imide residues to which acid labile groups are attached. These compositions provide high resolution, high contrast and high sensitivity in the deep UV (wavelength of 250-300 nm), mid-UV (wavelength of 300-350 nm) or conventional (wavelength of 350-450 nm) exposure bands. The compositions are also suitable for exposure at wavelengths commonly associated with excimer laser sources (248, 308 nm) or for exposure by X-radiation.In the compositions disclosed, the imide group ##STR1## can be blocked with certain groups, X, to form compounds containing the structure ##STR2## which have solubility properties different from the unblocked imide. These groups, X, can be cleaved by acid under the proper conditions to regenerate the unblocked imide.

Abstract: A process for producing boron-containing ceramics such as boron carbide and boron nitride comprises pyrolyzing a blend of a precarbonaceous polymer such as polyacrylonitrile and a boron-containing polymer such as that formed by the reaction of a borane with a Lewis base. Pyrolyzation in an inert atmosphere yields boron carbide while pyrolyzation in a reactive gas burns away the precarbonaceous polymer and yiels a ceramic comprising the reaction product of boron and the pyrolyzation gas. Boron nitride ceramics are formed by pyrolyzing the preceramic blend in ammonia.
