Patent number: 6053270Abstract: In a steering angle correcting system, a steering amount required to maintain a positional relationship of a subject vehicle to a road lane ahead of the subject vehicle is calculated in a steering amount calculating device based on outputs from a first detecting device for detecting the state of a lane of a road ahead of the vehicle or which the vehicle is traveling, and a second detecting device for detecting a current positional relationship of the subject vehicle to the road lane. A steering device is driven by a driving device mounted between a grasping portion of a steering wheel and the steering device so as to decrease the difference between a steering amount detected by a steering amount detecting device and a steering amount calculated in the steering amount calculating device. Whenever a driver's intention and the determination by the system are different from each other, a driver can operate the steering wheel to intervene in the steering.Type: GrantFiled: November 1, 1996Date of Patent: April 25, 2000Assignee: Honda Giken Kogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Masao Nishikawa, Shinnosuke Ishida, Kenshirou Hashimoto

Patent number: 6053273Abstract: A steering system for a vehicle is provided in which each of the inner cables of two Bowden wires has one end thereof wound around and fixed to a driving pulley provided on a rotary shaft of a steering wheel, and the other end thereof is connected to a follower pulley. Spring sheets provided at end of outer tubes of the Bowden wires, are biased by springs and are connected to differential transformers. When a difference in tension corresponding to steering torque is generated between the two inner cables, the spring sheets are moved relative to each other, and a steering torque is determined based upon the amount of relative movement detected by the differential transformers. Thus, the steering torque inputted to the steering wheel can be correctly detected, while eliminating the influence of friction of the Bowden wires.Type: GrantFiled: April 4, 1997Date of Patent: April 25, 2000Assignee: Honda Giken Kogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Yasuo Shimizu, Hiroshi Tabata

Patent number: 6053274Abstract: Operation of a steering wheel is transmitted to a steering gear box through two cables. In this cable-type steering device, a steering torque inputted to the steering wheel is detected by a steering torque detector provided between the steering wheel and the cables. The operation of a motor for a power steering operation for driving the steering gear box is controlled on the basis of the detected steering torque. The steering torque detected by the steering torque detector includes the friction of the cables and hence, a steering torque offsetting the friction of the cables can be generated in the motor for the power steering operation, thereby providing an appropriate steering feeling. A hydraulic power steering device may be used instead of or in addition to a motor for a power steering operation.Type: GrantFiled: May 12, 1998Date of Patent: April 25, 2000Assignee: Honda Giken Kogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Shigeki Ehara, Kouichi Suyama

Patent number: 6053509Abstract: An active actuator is interposed between the unsprung mass and the sprung mass of a vehicle, and extended and retracted in a cyclic manner so as to apply a prescribed reaction to the unsprung mass during an extending stroke of the actuator. Thus, the additional contact load is applied to the tire in a cyclic manner over a desired period of time so that the gripping force of the tire can be increased over a desired period of time. Although the increase in the tire contact load and the reduction in the tire contact load occurs in an alternating, cyclic manner, it is possible to achieve an overall advantage for instance in reducing the braking distance by intermittently increasing the tire contact load of the rear wheels by detecting the braking action of the vehicle with a suitable acceleration sensor or the like.Type: GrantFiled: March 24, 1998Date of Patent: April 25, 2000Assignee: Honda Giken Kogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Masaki Izawa, Kei Oshida, Hideaki Shibue
