  • Publication number: 20170207683
Abstract: A method for generating electrical power may include the steps of rotating a rotor of a generator at a speed in excess of about 12,000 revolutions per minute (rpm) to about 25,000 rpm and producing power with the generator at a rate in excess of about 800 kilowatts (kW). The generator has a power/weight ratio no smaller than about 3 kW/lbs. A rotor is cooled with cooling oil internally circulated through the rotor of the generator so that contact of cooling oil with external surfaces of the rotor may be precluded. The stator is also cooled with oil that is prevented from contacting the external surfaces of the rotor. Pressurized airflow may be produced in a gap between the rotor and a stator of the generator to preclude entry of cooling oil into the gap.

  • Patent number: 9708925
Abstract: A centrifugal compressor for a turbocharger includes an inlet-adjustment mechanism in an air inlet for the compressor, operable to move between an open position and a closed position in the air inlet. The inlet-adjustment mechanism includes a variable-geometry orifice actuated by a rotatable actuator ring. In the closed position, the orifice's inner diameter is smaller than that of a shroud surface of the compressor housing and therefore dictates the effective inlet diameter for the compressor. In the open position the orifice no longer forms an inner diameter smaller than the shroud surface, so that the effective inlet diameter is determined by the shroud surface.

  • Patent number: 9711886
Abstract: An apparatus for installing or replacing license software such as in a device or secure digital card of a controller. The apparatus may have a door that is situated in a base of the controller. The door may slide down to provide an opening that permits access to a place, an area or receptacle that holds the card. The door may not necessarily be open-able until the controller is removed from a panel, a din rail, or some other structure, where a removal of power has to occur. The door may be designed so that it blends in with the base in that just qualified installers are aware of how to find the door for access to the card. To close the door, the card needs to be fully installed before the door can be closed. The door may be designed with hook features to prevent its removal from the controller base.

  • Patent number: 9711838
Abstract: Coaxial probes for guided wave radar level transmitters have an inner rod within an outer tube. Transmission line impedance changes where the space between the two fills with process fluid, causing a reflection of radar energy. Time of flight calculations yield the distance to the product and thus the level of the fluid in a tank. The inner rod and outer rod should maintain their spacing because a reflection can occur if the inner rod moves too close to the outer tube wall. Spacers can maintain the spacing. The spacers should be retained so that their location over time doesn't change. Retention strategies involving shoulders or discontinuities in the inner rod or outer tube can cause measurement errors. Applications requiring high temperature resistance and high chemical compatibility lead to ceramic spacers instead of plastic spacers. Slip fits are needed when ceramics are too stiff for snap-in functionality.

  • Patent number: 9711055
Abstract: This disclosure is directed to systems and methods for smart transitioning between aircraft trajectory management modes. In one example, a system is configured to track a speed of a target aircraft in flight ahead of an own aircraft on which the system is positioned. The system is further configured to determine whether the target aircraft has maintained a rate of change in speed within a selected range of variation in change of speed, for a selected period of time. The system is further configured to enable an activation of a merging trajectory management mode of the own aircraft in response to determining that the own aircraft is in a trajectory management mode transition airspace and that the target aircraft has maintained the rate of change in speed within the selected range of variation in change of speed, for the selected period of time.

  • Patent number: 9709109
Abstract: In the manufacture of carbon-carbon composite brake discs, migration of anti-oxidant substances into the friction surfaces is prevented by limiting or eliminating surface porosity in the carbon-carbon composite brake materials. The method includes infusing a suitable resin into pores in surface layers of the carbon-carbon composite disc and then charring the resin-infused disc to convert the resin in the pores to pyrolytic carbon. The resin may be infused into the carbon disc by submerging the disc in a molten resin. Prior to submerging the disc in the molten resin, the disc may subjected to a vacuum to remove air from the pores. While the disc is submerged in the molten resin, the pressure in the pressurizable vessel may increased to force the molten resin into the open porosity of the disc.

  • Patent number: 9709068
Abstract: A mechanism for differential pressure sealing for use in a compressor, such as for fuel cell applications, is described. In a dual-stage compressor, a low pressure side and/or a high pressure side of the dual-stage compressor may include a compressor wheel supported by a shaft that can rotate about an axis of the shaft. A seal carrier may be provided that rotates with the compressor wheel and includes a groove for receiving a sealing ring, which may be a split expansion ring. A static seal plate may be positioned around a periphery of a portion of the seal carrier, such that the sealing ring can seal against a contact surface of the static seal plate when received in the groove in order to create a pressure differential seal. The low pressure side may include one sealing ring, whereas the high pressure side may include two sealing rings positioned in series.
