Abstract: A semiconductor structure includes an upper and a lower layer of semiconductor material separated by a layer of insulation material. Resistors formed in the upper layer are connected into a Wheatstone bridge arrangement having an output. A first voltage provides power to the bridge. A second voltage connected to the lower layer of semiconductor material has a value selected to reduce the drift of the output following power up of the sensor.
Abstract: A method and system for terrain aided navigation which provide more precise and more accurate position, velocity, altitude, and attitude for an air vehicle. The present method is a continuous, active, all-weather, day/night, self-contained vehicle system used for terminal and en route navigation. The present method utilizes on-vehicle sensing elements which require no external stimulation, eliminating dependence on external ground and space-based navigation aides. The present method also provides a drift-free solution. The present method is more difficult to detect (sense) and more difficult to disrupt.

Abstract: A system, method, and computer program product for alerting a flight crew of weather radar return data collected, yet not presently being displayed. The system includes a memory, a processor, and an output device. The memory stores radar return information in a three-dimensional buffer. The processor determines if any radar return information stored in a three-dimensional buffer is within a threshold distance from an aircraft's present position and generates an image based on target data stored in the three-dimensional buffer and selected display parameters. The processor also generates a target alert if any target data is determined to be within a threshold distance from the aircraft's present position and is not included in the generated image. The output device presents the generated target alert.

Abstract: A lower stress and higher service life curvic coupling design is disclosed for use on coupling mechanisms for assembly of components that comprise rotating elements, such as impellers, turbine wheels and couplings for gas turbine engines and other types of engines having highly stressed components. The curvic coupling design includes a compound fillet radius, comprised of a large and a small radius, located between the root and the pressure surface of all splined teeth on the torque transmitting coupling halves. The larger radius, with its lower stress concentration, is positioned in the root area where the background hoop stresses act, thereby resulting in a lower fillet peak stress value. The smaller radius smoothly connects the larger radius with the pressure surface, minimizing the penetration of the fillet surface towards the mating tooth, thereby allowing proper clearances to be maintained.
Abstract: A collimated or partially collimated light beam is sent through a substrate matrix of a plurality of nested individual joined geometrically shaped cells wherein each of the cells contains a patterned holographic diffuser or binary optic sheet which produces a transmitted diffused light beam from each of the cells and then superimposes each transmitted diffused light beams from each of the cells to produce a combined resultant diffused light beam. The geometrically shaped cells are clustered in a contiguous arrangement of nested cell subgroups, which are themselves geometrically shaped. When graphed, an angular luminance distribution profile curve with sharply vertical profile slopes at halfpeak points and with a substantially flat and wide peak is resultant which produces a uniform resultant luminance over a wide range of view with a predetermined beam spread and beam deflection angle in relation to a predetermined location of view of the combined resultant diffused light beam.
Abstract: A low dielectric constant material has a first backbone with an aromatic moiety and a first reactive group, and a second backbone with an aromatic moiety and a second reactive group, wherein the first and second backbones are crosslinked via the first and second reactive groups in a crosslinking reaction without an additional crosslinker, and wherein a cage structure having at least 10 atoms is covalently bound to at least one of the first and second backbone.

Abstract: A circuit is protected from the application voltage from a high and a low voltage source that may power up at different times by supplying a circuit the applies an intermediate voltage whenever the high voltage has powered up when the low voltage has not until such time as the low voltage has powered up.
Abstract: A method of resizing a liquid crystal display (LCD) includes the steps of first determining a desired size for the LCD, thereby identifying an undesired portion of the LCD. Any tape automated bonding strips (TABs) corresponding to the undesired portions of the LCD are then removed. Any flex circuits, or portion thereof, corresponding to the undesired portion of the LCD are cut and removed. Any circuit boards, or portions thereof, corresponding to the undesired portion of the LCD are cut and removed. The display panel is cut to remove a portion of the display panel corresponding to the undesired portion of the LCD. Finally, the cut edge of the display panel is sealed.

Abstract: A spacecraft payload, suspended by an isolator, is locked down during launch by using a compliant member to pull on a pin, clamping the payload against the launch lock. The payload is unlocked, after launch, by heating a shape memory alloy to move the pin to overcome the compliant member, releasing the payload from launch lock. The payload may be re-locked for reentry by heating another shape memory alloy to push the pin against the other shaped memory alloy.

Abstract: Systems and methods are discussed that detect the position of an actuator. One aspect of the present invention includes a system to detect a position of an actuator. The system includes a magnetic source coupled to the actuator radiating a field, at least two sensors to generate a response based on angles of the field, and an analyzer receptive to the response to produce an enhanced position of the magnetic source. Such analysis occurs in the presence of undesired effects arising from misalignment of the at least two sensors. Another aspect of the present invention includes a method for detecting a position of an actuator. The method includes interpolating a response of at least two sensors to form a quantity. The quantity is indicative of a position of a magnetic source coupled to the actuator. The method further includes adjusting the quantity by selecting one of two compensation techniques. One compensation technique is based on maximum slopes of the response curve.

Abstract: In a first embodiment, the present invention provides computer-implemented methods for allocating resources to items are provided. Methods according to the present invention first determine one or more assignment scores for each item/resource pair by applying one or more application-specific strategies to each item/resource pair using game theory. A cost matrix is created by first summing the assignment scores for each item/resource pair and then multiplying each assignment score sum by an assignment cost associated with assignment a particular resource to a particular item. Finally, an assignment solution is found by applying the Hungarian method to the cost matrix. In a second embodiment, the present invention provides a computer-readable medium having computer-executable instructions for performing a methods of the present invention.

Abstract: A ram air turbine system provides liquid cooling of its generator by employing a closed loop liquid cooling line originating from a pump in the gearbox of the system. In the preferred embodiment the pump may be a pitot pump to which gearbox lubricating oil may be channeled along a trough that is located in the gearbox. At least a portion of the trough is immersed in the oil which travels along the trough toward the pump in response to turbine shaft rotation. The oil is directed into a cooling jacket which is integral to the generator and then to a heat exchanger exposed to airflow. The oil is then returned to the gearbox.
