Less than all of the vertices of each face of the porous geometry at least partially confronting the first layer are connected by a strut to the first layer. A process of producing the at least partially porous structure includes depositing and scanning metal powder layers. At least some of the scanned metal powder layers form either one or both of a portion of a first section of the structure and a portion of a second section of the structure formed by at least the struts defining the porous geometry.

The medical implant includes a stem and a collar disposed around a portion of the stem. Inserting the medical implant include fully seating a portion of the stem into the tapered bore to form a press-fit between the stem and the long bone. The collar may be moved into the counter bore to a depth less than the second depth.

The retention portion is configured to be deflected at the distal end of the elongate body such that the enlarged periphery has a reduced profile for separating the handling tool from a glenosphere.
