Abstract: This invention is directed to halodihydrodioxins, their preparation and their polymers, which provide amorphous homopolymers that are resistant to ring opening side reactions. The resulting polymers can be used for films and thermally stable molded objects, coatings for substrates such as wood, glass, paper and metal and for protective packaging. This invention also concerns the preparation of polyhalogenated dioxoles.
Abstract: A workpiece manipulating apparatus for faceplate panels of cathode ray tubes includes a conveyor for carrying panels along two groups of grinder stations in a pattern coordinated with carriage mounted loaders which move along the conveyor. The conveyor indexes to loading stations as do the loaders. Unground panels are sequenced to the stations as the loaders are present. Loaders pick the unground panels from the conveyor and transfer them to an orienting station which orients panels for loading into a grinder. Loaders pick an oriented panel from the orienting station and load it in to the grinder at the loading station. They also picks up ground panels from the grinder and place them in a reorient station and picks ground panels from the reorient station and places them on the conveyor in the position from which they removed an unground panel. The loader advances to a next loading station to load a next grinder and the conveyor with panels picked up at the preceeding station.

Abstract: An improved intensifying lead screen for use with photographic, industrial X-ray films, having a low propensity to produce electrostatic changes, is described. This screen comprises a lead foil adhesively applied to a polyester support with an overcoat or protective layer applied over the lead layer and coated thereon, a layer of a fluorosurfactant.
Abstract: A detachable coupling for connecting an implement, e.g. bucket, to an excavator. The coupling has two parallel link arms that are pinned to the operating arms of the excavator. A locking unit held between these arms has a slidable tension pin that engages a wedge support affixed to the implement. Two pins at either end of the locking device fit loosely into apertures in the link arms. When the tension spring is wedged against the wedge support, the pins are pressed against a surface of the aperture in the link arms to form a rigid coupling between the implement and excavator.
Abstract: A silica powder composition in which the individual powder particles comprise shaped hollow shells of amorphous hydroxylated silica having a shell thickness of from 10 to 50 nanometers.
Abstract: A method for optimizing the processing of continuous media mills is disclosed. It has been found that using a differential pressure device to measure the pressure drop across the mill allows the on line determination of the state of media fluidization in the mill. Operation within an optimum mill base flow rate range is needed to have good fluidization of the media so that grinding can be efficient. Using differential pressure measurement allows a precise determination of the mill base flow rate range which provides full fluidization of the media and mill base flow rate control within that range.
Abstract: Blends of asphalt emulsions or melts and aqueous elastomeric latices are prepared using a screw type extruder adapted to provide sufficient back pressure within the screw flights of the extruder to express the water from the blend through a vent provided in the extruder.
Abstract: A variable TCE composition for making dielectric layers having low dielectric constant and low dielectric loss, the composition comprising an admixture of finely divided solids comprising amorphous crystallizable glass, amorphous borosilicate frit, ceramic expansion control additive, and crystallization control additive. The dielectric layers are useful in circuits especially for high density and high frequency applications.
Abstract: A method is disclosed for metallizing polymers comprising generating anionic sites on the structures, contacting same with the cation of the metal and then reducing the metal cation to metal at the anionic sites or treating the metal cations to form a semiconductor. The metallized polymers are useful as electrical conductors or semiconductors.
Abstract: An improved process is provided for flash-spinning plexifilamentary film-fibril strands of fiber-forming polyolefin from a small group halocarbon liquids that, if released to the atmosphere, present a greatly reduced ozone depletion hazard, as compared to the halocarbon currently-used commercially for making the strands. The preferred halocarbon for this purpose is 1,1-dichloro-2,2,2-trifluoroethane.
Abstract: Ketoester of the formula ##STR1## .alpha.-carboxylate-.omega.-acyl fluoride of the formula ##STR2## vinyl ether of the formula ##STR3## divinyl ether of the formula ##STR4## allyl ether of the formula ##STR5## and film-forming copolymers, useful as molding resins, of the vinyl ether and/or the divinyl ether or the allyl ether and a fluorinated vinyl monomer, for example, tetrafluoroethylene, wherein, in the above formulas, n is 0 to 6, p is 0 to 7, X is CO.sub.2 M, CO.sub.2 R, CO.sub.2 H, CONH.sub.2, COF, COCl or Cn, M is alkali metal, ammonium or quaternary ammonium and R is C.sub.1-8 alkyl, selected copolymers, after hydrolysis, being water-wettable and dyeable, exhibiting ion-exchange properties and being useful in curable fluoroelastomer compositions and, in film form, as the membrane in a chloroalkali electrolysis cell.
Abstract: A blend, a batt, and a process for making the batt from the blend is disclosed. The blend and batt are made from a uniform combination of cotton and copolyester binder fibers wherein the binder fibers have a melting temperature of 230.degree. to 340.degree. F.
Abstract: Method and apparatus for encouraging maximal plant growth which method and apparatus comprise a light filter which prevents the natural decay of plant growth stimulating materials by absorption of UV radiation while permitting photosynthesis to occur with blue light in the absence of attendant heat generating and dehydrating radiations caused by green, yellow and infra-red light. The objective is made possible according to the preferred embodiment of the invention by interposing separately, continuously, or discontinuously, a combination of filters made of solid material between the sun and the growing plants which block out radiation in those wave lengths which are either physiologically harmful or which retard growth, but do not inhibit those wavelengths which are necessary for photosynthesis, metabolism, differentiation and development.
Abstract: A method for preparing a superconductive fiber or film of improved critical current density. The method involves spinning an aqueous solution optionally containing a mixture of metal salts corresponding to the superconductive YBa.sub.2 Cu.sub.3 O.sub.x and a water soluble polymer. This method produces a more dense superconductive material upon firing.
Abstract: Azeotropic mixtures of 1,1,1,2,3,3-hexafluoro-3-methoxypropane with methanol or isopropanol or n-propanol, the azeotropic mixtures being useful in solvent cleaning applications.
Abstract: This invention relates to a gas-assisted vaporization process for purifying cyclic esters such as glycolide, lactides and mixtures thereof which enables the cyclic ester to be rapidly separated from its impurities as a vapor component of a gas stream. The process includes a solvent-scrubbing step for recovering the cyclic ester from the gas stream.
