Abstract: A filler composition that is suitable for use in the manufacture of paper, board, wet-laid non-wovens or other fibrous sheet materials comprises (preferably flocculated) filler particles (e.g. mineral fillers such as clay, talc or calcium carbonate) attached to fibres (e.g. synthetic organic fibres such as polyester or aramid fibres) by means of a coupling agent. These fibres generally have an average fibre length of 4 mm or more. Suitable coupling agents include oligomeric and other polymeric materials such as modified starch, cellulose ethers and derivatives thereof, modified natural gums, ketene dimers or poly(vinyl alcohol). Colloidal silica or colloidal bentonite clay may also be included. The filler composition is preferably added to the stock before the latter reaches the flowbox of the sheet-making machine. The invention allows high levels of filler to be achieved while maintaining satisfactory strength properties, in particular tear strength, in the sheet.

Abstract: A continuous process for the preparation of a dispersion of liquid and resin or polymer particles having at least one additive dispersed in the resin comprisingA. introducing an intimate blend of resin and at least one additive continuously into or blending the ingredients in an apparatus having means for melting the resin and dispersing the additive in the resin,B. melting the resin in the apparatus at an elevated temperature but below that at which the resin and/or additive decomposes,C. moving continuously the blend of melted resin and additive through at least one mixing element of the apparatus dispersing thoroughly the additive in the melted resin (molten blend),D.
Abstract: Fluorine-containing iodo-substituted 1-hexenes, their preparation by the addition of two moles of ethylene to fluorine-containing iodo olefins, and their dehydroiodination to fluorine-containing 1,5-dienes are disclosed.
Abstract: A stabilizer pad assembly including a reversible stabilizer pad and a pad limit stop designed as an attachment to a positionable support arm of an earth moving apparatus such as a loader/backhoe. The pad limit stop is configured to wedge between the stabilizer pad and a distal end of the support arm in a manner limiting movement of the stabilizer pad between alternate positions and thereby inhibiting damage to a driver used to control the position of the support arm.
Abstract: A unit of series-connected semiconductor elements includes a cylindrical metal case with a clamping mechanism enclosed therein. A chain of semiconductor elements is arranged between the surfaces of clamping elements of the clamping mechanism coaxially with the case. One extreme semiconductor element of the chain contacts the bottom of the case made of a current-conducting material, functioning as one clamping element of the clamping mechanism. The second extreme semiconductor element of the chain contacts the second clamping element of the clamping mechanism, made of an insulation material and mechanically coupled with the side walls of the case. The unit also contains current-carrying busbars electrically associated with the outputs of the extreme semiconductor elements of the chain, one of the current-carrying busbars being electrically connected with the upper part of the side wall of the case.

Abstract: Copolyamide desalination membranes formed by interfacial polymerization on a microporous support are disclosed. The copolyamide is formed by copolymerization of m-phenylene diamine with cyclohexane-1,3,5-tricarbonyl chloride and any of isophthaloyl chloride, terephthaloyl chloride, alkylene diacyl chlorides containing 4 to 12 carbon atoms, cyclohexane dicarbonyl chlorides and mixtures thereof wherein the average functionality of the acyl chlorides is from 2.20 to 2.80.
Abstract: A permselective polyimide membrane having phenylindane residues incorporated into the polyimide backbone chain exhibiting high selectivity while maintaining good gas permeation rates and a process for using.
Abstract: Certain derivatives of stilbene and diphenylacetylene are capable of second harmonic generation when illuminated by coherent optical radiation.
Abstract: This invention relates to a process and apparatus for producing constitutent amino acids from proteins and peptides and, in particular, for rapid microwave hydrolysis of proteins and peptides for amino acid analysis.
Abstract: A cotton harvesting unit with a cotton doffer assembly rotatable about a vertical axis and including an adjustable drive unit with a vertical drive shaft for imparting rotary motion to and for vertically positioning doffer pads of a doffer unit relative to picker spindles of an adjacent picker rotor. The drive unit vertically positions the doffer pads through an operative mechanism rotatable about a second axis adjacent to the doffer assembly. A motion converting mechanism converts rotary motion of the operative mechanism into linear motion of the drive unit drive shaft. The drive shaft of the drive unit and doffer unit are releasably interconnected to each other to facilitate repair/replacement of the doffer unit. To inhibit contaminants for encumbering adjustment of the drive unit, the motion converting mechanism is wholly arranged within the housing assembly and protected from the ambient environment in which a harvester is operated.

Abstract: A low insertion force type connector is provided which comprises an elongated housing made of an insulating material and having an elongated cavity in a longitudinal direction. A plurality of contacts are located at predetermined intervals along the length of the elongated cavity and are adapted to contact an edge portion of the printed circuit board. A pair of latches are located at opposite ends of the housing providing a spacing defined therebetween over the cavity. Each contact comprises first contact means having a first contact portion for contacting one surface of the printed circuit board and second contact means having a second contact portion for contacting the other surface of the printed circuit board, and a pin portion for supporting the first and second contact means.

Abstract: A process for increasing the direct esterification reaction rate between a diacid and 1,4-butanediol and for directly esterifying greater than 95% of the acid ends of the diacid by mixing in any order the diacid, the 1,4-butanediol and a catalyst compound selected from organo-titanium, organo-tin, and organo-zirconium compounds, to form a reaction mixture wherein the ratio of diol:diacid is at least 2:1 and then reacting the reaction mixture at an average temperature ranging between 190.degree. C. to 200.degree. C. for a period of time no longer than sixty minutes. The same process may be followed substituting ethylene glycol for 1,4-butanediol, provided the catalyst compound is added neat, further provided that the average reaction temperature ranges from 190.degree. C. to 200.degree. C., and also provided that the reaction mixture be reacted for a period of time no longer than seventy minutes.
