Abstract: The nucleophilic substitution upon unactivated monocyclic or polycyclic aromatic or heteroaromatic substrates bearing suitable leaving groups can be achieved by catalyzing the substitution of said leaving groups by an anionic nucleophile with a cyclic or acyclic polydentate chelating ligand. Specific products of this reaction can be used in preparing sulfonylurea herbicides.

Abstract: A process improvement for preparing thermoplastic polymeric film, preferably of polyethylene terephthalate, by extruding a web in melt form onto a quench drum with a surface roughness of at least 3 microinches. In casting webs of less than about 5 mils in thickness the improvement involves drawing the melt to a melt drawdown ratio of less than about 25 and spacing the die lips from the quench roll at less than about 120 mils, preferably 20 to 80 mils. It is also preferred that the flow stability index be greater than 5.
Abstract: Process for production of photographic masks for tonal correction by dry dot etching comprising exposing a mask film, e.g., positive film, behind a film combination of half-tone positives and negatives that contains at least one pair of a positive and a negative of the same color separation, said pair being separated from one another by a spacer film, e.g., transparent, matt film, etc. The half-tone values at the points to be corrected are in the range of 30-70%.
Abstract: Polyester fiberfill having spiral-crimp, especially in the form of an omega (.OMEGA.), that is randomly-arranged and entangled in the form of fiberballs with a minimum of hairs extending from their surface, and having a refluffable characteristic similar to that of down on account of the low cohesion between the balls. A process for making such fiberballs by repeatedly air-tumbling small tufts of such fiberfill against the wall of a vessel.
Abstract: A multistage process for preparing interfacially polymerized polyamide reverse osmosis membranes on a microporous support is disclosed. The process involves applying a solution containing from 1 to 10 wt % of an aromatic diamine having 1 or 2 aromatic rings and 2 to 3 amino groups in a first solvent to the microporous substrate. Then a solution of an aromatic or cyclophatic acyl chloride having 1 or 2 rings and 2.2 to 4 acyl chloride groups in a solvent immiscible with the first solvent is applied to the microporous substrate. Then a solution of different acyl chlorides is applied to the substrate. The acyl chlorides in this second solution can have 2 to 4 acyl chloride groups attached to an aliphatic group of 6 to 12 carbon atoms or an aromatic or cycloaliphatic group having 1 or 2 rings and containing 8 to 14 carbon atoms. Also suitable for the second treatment are bis chloroformates.
Abstract: A switch actuation assembly is provided with a support means for supporting the switch in a fixed position relative to orientations of a moveable member. A motion response element is operably connected to the moveable member for being moved in one of two directions in response to movement of the moveable member toward one of the orientations and for being moved in the other of the two directions in response to the movement of the moveable member toward the other of the two orientations. An actuating member is provided for engaging the switch to actuate the switch from a first position to a second position. The actuating member is in frictional contact with the motion response element whereby the actuating member is moved by the response element until any force of resistance to the movement of the actuating member exceeds the static friction force.

Abstract: A knitted covering for a core, e.g. of hose or electrical cable or the like, is constituted as a circular warp knit in which each of a single system of warp yarns jumps over at least one and less than all of the wales of the system in passing from course to course. A method of making the knitted core covering is also described.
