Abstract: The invention relates to the aiming of an optical illuminator on a target. The direction in which is seen the maximum light of the illuminator reflected by the target is detected, the angle formed by this direction and the direction of sight is measured and the result of this measurement is employed for controlling an orientation of the optical axis of the illuminator or of the optical axis of the sighting system, with the result that the direction in which is seen this maximum coincides with the optical axis of the sighting system. The invention is particularly applied to the sending of a moving body, provided with an optical, self-directing system, onto a target.

Abstract: Photopolymerizable elements are described comprising a sheet support, a photopolymerizable layer having a thickness of, at most, 0.0006 inch (0.015 mm.) and an optical density of at least 3.0 in the actinic region. Resist images made from these elements may be etched by a process of chemically undercutting the image areas and then spraying or rubbing them. The elements are useful as contact speed lithographic films and for other graphic arts applications.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for coloring or dyeing a material formed essentially from a substrate impregnated with bitumen, said method being characterized in that a colored composition is applied, in particular a pigmented composition, to the substrate before the impregnation of the latter by the bitumen. It also concerns the material thus obtained, characterized by a color gradient between the surface and the inside of the substrate, the color intensity decreasing continuously and practically regularly from the surface.

Abstract: Process for preparing pigmented microporous silica microspheres by spraying an aqueous suspension of pigment in a solution of alkali metal silicate through the air into a medium consisting of from 20% to 100% by volume of a water miscible organic liquid, the balance being water. The resulting microspheres are highly effective opacifying agents.
Abstract: An inspection system for web materials, including electronic means responsive to means scanning the web for detecting a plurality of nonuniform appearance features of the web; means for discriminating these appearance features as to class to identify the significant electrical signal components thereof; means for electrically dividing the web into overlapping areas; means for counting the number of occurrences of the significant signal components over a series of scans within each of the overlapping areas; means for comparing each count with predetermined values to electrically define nonuniform appearance features according to area; and means for combining these nonuniform appearance features to recognize the occurrence of a visual defect class as it occurs within each overlapping area.
Abstract: A process for preparing a furan compound by the catalytic oxidation of a diolefin such as butadiene or a halo-substituted alkene is provided. In this process the starting material is contacted with an aqueous medium having a pH less than about 2 containing (1) iodide ion, (2) a mixture of cuprous and cupric ions, and (3) a solubilizing agent for cuprous ion such as an alkali metal halide. Optionally, an oxygen-containing gas such as air can also be contacted with the aqueous medium. In one embodiment, the starting material is contacted with an aqueous solution of the aforesaid ingredients in one reaction zone to prepare furan and a portion of the solution is passed to a second reaction zone where curpous ion is oxidized to cupric ion with air and then the air-treated solution returned to the first reaction zone.
Abstract: Compositions useful for making electrical conductor patterns on a nonconductive (dielectric) substrate, the compositions comprising certain proportions of finely divided copper, copper oxide and glass powders, dispersed in a vehicle. The compositions may be printed on a substrate and fired in a neutral atmosphere to produce conductor patterns adherent to the substrate.
Abstract: A carburettor for an internal combustion engine comprises an air valve and a driver-actuatable throttle in an induction pipe. The air valve controls proportioning means metering the flow rate of fuel drawn into the induction pipe downstream of the main throttle means via a discharge orifice. A fuel pressure regulator is disposed between the fuel proportioning means and the discharge orifice for controlling the pressure of the fuel discharged into the induction pipe and comprises a valve actuated by a diaphragm one face of which limits a control chamber communicated with that portion of the induction pipe located between the throttle and the air valve. The other surface is subjected to the fuel pressure prevailing upstream of the valve.
