Abstract: An optical element has a plano-plano body formed of a first material having a greater refraction index n1 and a second material having a lesser refraction index n2. Both indices are greater than one. The absolute value of the index contrast, log10 (n1/n2), is in the range from about 0.001 to about 0.17, preferably from about 0.01 to about 0.05. The materials have an induced absorbance rate ?Abs/Dose less than or equal to about 0.4, preferably less than or equal to about 0.2. The materials are arranged such that an interface with at least one cusp is defined therebetween. The cusp has an apex pointed toward the material having the greater index of refraction. The cusp is operative to produce a region of increased light intensity on one surface of the optical element in response to light incident on the other surface of the optical element.

Abstract: A multi-directional remote control system and method is adapted for use with an entertainment system of a type including a display such as a monitor or TV and having display functions employing a mouse type control. The remote controller may be conveniently held in one hand of a user and still provides full mouse type functionality using a two level switch tracking and drag control. The remote control system and method detects relative motion between the controller and screen. This position information is used for control of a cursor or other GUI interface.
Abstract: A cache server for providing content includes a processor configured to receive a first datagram from a client system sent to an anycast address, send a response datagram to the client system in response to the first datagram, receive a request datagram from the client system sent to the anycast address, and send a batch of content datagrams to the client system. The first datagram includes a universal resource locator corresponding to the content. The response datagram includes a content identifier for the content. The request datagram includes the content identifier, an offset, and a bandwidth indicator. The batch of content datagrams includes a portion of the content starting at the offset.

Abstract: A method includes, in response to determining that a distribution capacity of a network device exceeds a first distribution capacity threshold and that the distribution capacity of the network device does not exceed a second distribution capacity threshold, determining, at the network device, whether a data source satisfies a popularity criteria. The method includes, in response to determining that the data source satisfies the popularity criteria, sending, from the network device, data associated with the data source to a user device.

An example secure desktop method for a computing platform disclosed herein comprises establishing a secure communication connection between a secure desktop provided by the computing platform and a trusted entity, the secure communication connection being accessible to a trusted application authenticated with the secure desktop, the secure communication connection being inaccessible to an untrusted application not authenticated with the secure desktop, and securing data that is stored by the secure desktop in local storage associated with the computing platform, the stored data being accessible to the trusted application and inaccessible to the untrusted application.
Abstract: Usage information is received that describes usage of communication services by a communications device. The usage information is compared to monitoring criteria. When the monitoring criteria are satisfied, an electronic notification message is sent to the communications device before an additional charge is incurred.
Abstract: A method of manufacturing a non-firing type electrode comprising steps of: (A) applying a conductive paste on a substrate; (B) heating the applied conductive paste at 50 to 350° C. to form an electrode; and (C) pressing the electrode at 10 to 1000 kN/m2 of plane surface pressure or at 5 to 300 kN/m of linear pressure.
Abstract: A system that incorporates teachings of the present disclosure may include, for example, a process that monitors consumption of media content of equipment of a user. A tout message associated with a media content item is constructed based on the consumption. The tout message includes information including a selectable link. The selectable link provides instructions to direct a media processor of the subscriber to access the media content item without receiving additional input from equipment of the subscriber. Abstract: A method and system for encoding and determining labels in a Dual Polarization (DP) Quaternary Phase Shift Keying (QPSK) signal is provided. A label frame, signature sequence, and data payload are combined using a complementary constant-weight code encoding (CCWC) encoder, the output of which is deinterleaved and differentially precoded to generate a polarized tributary of a DP-QPSK signal. This encoding can be duplicated for a second tributary of the DP-QPSK signal. The label can be determined using one or more polarizers and corresponding low-speed photodetectors, each applied to a copy of the DP-QPSK signal. The strongest output of the photodetectors is then used to determine the label. Alternatively, the DP-QPSK signal can be viewed as having XI, XQ, PH, and PV tributaries. These tributaries can then be translated into XI, XQ, YI, and YQ tributaries are encoded into a standard DP-QPSK signal.
