Abstract: The data processing system of the present invention loads three input operands, including two input vectors and a control vector, into vector registers and performs a permutation of the two input vectors as specified by the control vector, and further stores the result of the operation as the output operand in an output register. The control vector consists of sixteen indices, each uniquely identifying a single byte of input data in either of the input registers, and can be specified in the operational code or be the result of a computation previously performed within the vector registers. The specification of the control vector allows a vector-matrix operation to be performed on the input vectors by rearranging or replicating the input operand bytes in the bytes of the output register as a function of the control vector.

Abstract: A magnetic card is set to an exclusive cardholder and inserted into a passbook printer. The passbook printer can read a magnetic stripe of a passbook and print the passbook or a document. The cardholder is fed by a feed roller or the like. Control device can detect the length of the cardholder by an insertion slot sensor. The control device adjusts the position of a magnetic stripe to the position of a magnetic head by the feed roller and the magnetic stripe is read by the magnetic head. The control device decides whether the read data is the data in the magnetic card or the data in the passbook in accordance with the format of the read data.
Abstract: Methods are provided to prepare photoresists without isolation of various components, i.e. in a "one-pot" procedure. Preferred one-pot preparation methods of the invention include preparing a photoresist resin binder in a selected photoresist solvent and, without isolation of the resin binder from the solvent, adding a photoactive component and any other desired photoresist materials to the resin binder in solution to thereby provide a liquid photoresist composition in the solvent in which the resin binder was prepared. The invention also provides novel methods for synthesizing resist resin binders, particularly phenolic polymers that contain phenolic OH groups covalently bonded to another moiety such as acid labile groups or inert blocking groups.

Abstract: The invention relates to a special type of magnetic tag that serves both as an identifier of the article to which it is attached and as an antitheft device. The former attribute is especially important should stolen property be recovered. Identification comes about through the use of an array of individual magnetic elements that are closely spaced, preferably along and perpendicular to an amorphous wire or strip. The magnetic elements can take the form of magnetic ink, high coercivity wire, thin foil, or amorphous wire. The array may be personalized (coded) by leaving out elements of the array or driving selected elements to saturation while others remain demagnetized. The elements can also be in the form of a double array to constitute `1`s and `0`s to form a code. Reading of the elements is accomplished with a special reading head consisting or one or more small magnetic circuits coupled to one or more pickup loops.

Abstract: A cache coherence protocol for a multiprocessor system. Each processor in the system has an associated cache capable of storing multiple word data lines. The system also includes a plurality of main memory modules, each having an associated distributed global directory storing directory information for lines stored in the associated main memory module. Each main memory module is connected to each processor by means of a multi-stage interconnection network. When a processor attempts to over-write an individual word in a line stored in its associated cache, a write request signal is sent to the appropriate global directory, and each other processor whose cache stores a copy of the line is notified of the request. When each other processor has responded with an acknowledgement, the first processor is allowed to proceed with the write.
Abstract: A spatial light modulator designed to use a minimum area on the surface of a silicon substrate. This invention comprises a silicon substrate on a back plate with a glass cover that is used to seal liquid crystal between the glass cover and the silicon substrate. Most importantly, the glue seal formed to contain the liquid crystal material is between the cover glass plate and the Si substrate on only one side and the back plate on the remaining three sides. This structure allows a smaller semiconductor substrate to be used.

Abstract: A method and apparatus is provided to enable a user watching and/or listening to a program to retrieve supplemental information or supplemental entertainment pertaining to an item just seen or words just heard. The apparatus includes a recognition system which recognizes the user's request and causes its satisfaction to be provided. A dynamically changing dictionary is created from items or keywords extracted from the most recently received program portion. The items or keywords may be contained in closed caption text in a TV signal. Particular items or keywords may be assigned a high priority so that they are maintained in the dictionary for a long duration. The user's request is matched against this continually changing dictionary. Upon recognition of the request, a search is initiated to access, import and deliver to the user the information required to satisfy the request.
Abstract: Shadow images, which are formed on a light-receiving surface by occluding light emitted from a light source with at least one occluding surface, are drawn by the generating data representative of brightness discontinuity edges that partition the light-receiving surface into loop areas that are completely occluded by the occluding surface and loop areas that are partially or totally irradiated by the light source. An irradiation state is assigned to each loop area. The loop areas are then divided into meshes according to the irradiation state assigned to the loop area. Pixel data is generated for each element of the mesh and output for display on a display device.
Abstract: A data processing system corrects handprinted character input represented as a sequence of points described by a writing path of a pointing device. The system receives a writing path signal from a pointing device in the data processing system, describing a first hand printed character input. The system performs character recognition on the writing path signal to provide a first character string. The system then displays the first character string in an edit pad area. The system then receives a correcting writing path signal in the edit pad area from the pointing device, describing a correction to the first hand printed character input. The system then performs character recognition on the correcting writing path signal to provide a second character string.

Abstract: A novel radio frequency transponder (tag) with a minimum of components and connects is thin and flexible because these components and connects can be unsupported by a substrate layer. This is accomplished by using a conducting leadframe structure not only as a connection medium but also as a circuit element, i.e., the transponder antenna. In various preferred embodiments, the leadframe is mechanically positioned and fixably attached to a circuit chip so that the leadframe (antenna) is self supporting. A protective coating can be added where the leadframe is attached to the circuit chip. Further a protective surrounding can envelops the entire leadframe antenna, circuit chip, and, if provided, the protective coating.

Abstract: A system and method for caching sequential data streams in a cache storage device. For each information stream, a determination is made as to whether its data blocks should discarded from cache as they are read by a consuming process. Responsive to a determination that the data blocks of a stream should be discarded from the cache are read by the consuming process, the data blocks associated with that stream are cached in accordance with an interval caching algorithm. Alternatively, responsive to a determination that the data blocks of a stream should not be discarded from the cache storage device as they are read by the consuming process, the data blocks of that stream are cached in accordance with a segment caching algorithm.
