Publication number: 20020069068Abstract: A terminal is designed so that a user who employs numerical keys, allocated for the entry of dots, can enter Braille dot combinations that are used for the input of characters. The input characters may be output as speech for feedback. Further, when a terminal accesses a server, Braille dot combinations can be entered in the above described manner, and speech can be fed back from the server. Furthermore, the server can provide a service for the user in accordance with a character string input at the terminal.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 30, 2001Publication date: June 6, 2002Applicant: IBMInventor: Kazuo Nemoto

Publication number: 20020069294Abstract: The present invention provides a method and system handling information exchange through networks 102 to 110 for interactive information exchange, especially for interactive Internet based game show. At least one server 120 and a plurality of client machines 130 to 146 are connected through the networks 102 to 110. First, the server 120 receives subscription messages from a subset of said client machines 130 to 146. By receiving the subscription messages from the client machines 130 to 146 the provider of the particular program knows which users want to participate in the program. In response, the server 120 composes a request message offering predetermined response options, whereby corresponding response messages are returned through said networks 102 to 110 in one or more packets. In parallel, packet forwarding rules are set up in said networks 102 to 110 specifying a particular treatment for said returned packets dependent on said predetermined response options.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 21, 2001Publication date: June 6, 2002Applicant: IBM CorporationInventors: Andreas Herkersdorf, Sean G. Publication number: 20020065968Abstract: A method and system is presented for controlling spin lock instrumentation for a spin lock in a data processing system that has a cache. A lock flag represents a busy state for the spin lock; a first instrumentation flag is a global variable that represents an enablement state for the spin lock instrumentation. A second instrumentation flag, stored within the same cache line as the lock flag, is also maintained as an updateable indication of the first instrumentation flag. Prior to each acquirement of the spin lock, the second instrumentation flag is checked to see if it indicates that spin lock instrumentation is enabled. Although a reading of the lock flag may generate a cache miss, the lock flag is necessarily checked upon attempting to acquire the lock; the check of the second instrumentation flag cannot generate a superfluous cache miss because the second instrumentation flag is in the same cache line as the lock flag.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 30, 2000Publication date: May 30, 2002Applicant: IBM CorporationInventors: Raymond Morris Bryant, William Henry Hartner

Publication number: 20020063884Abstract: A method for managing printing priorities in a computer network environment is provided. The method includes priorities for network print jobs being set by a network administrator and/or network users. The priority of a new print job entering the print queue is compared to the priority of other jobs already in the queue. The new job is delayed until any higher priority jobs have finished printing. If the new print job has the highest priority in the print queue and has a higher priority than the job currently printing, the current job is suspended until the new job prints in full. The suspended job is then resumed. The priority settings can be changed by the network administrator and/or the network users, according to changing circumstances.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 29, 2000Publication date: May 30, 2002Applicant: IBM CorporationInventors: Kulvir Singh Bhogal, Bali Baweja, Nizam Ishmael, Mandeep Sidhu

Publication number: 20020059150Abstract: The method and circuits of the present invention aim to associate a norm to each component of an input pattern presented to an input space mapping algorithm based artificial neural network (ANN) during the distance evaluation process. The set of norms, referred to as the “component” norms is memorized in specific memorization means in the ANN. In a first embodiment, the ANN is provided with a global memory, common for all the neurons of the ANN, that memorizes all the component norms. For each component of the input pattern, all the neurons perform the elementary (or partial) distance calculation with the corresponding prototype components stored therein during the distance evaluation process using the associated component norm. The distance elementary calculations are then combined using a “distance” norm to determine the final distance between the input pattern and the prototypes stored in the neurons.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 12, 2001Publication date: May 16, 2002Applicant: IBMInventors: Ghislain Imbert de Tremiolles, Pascal Tannhof

Publication number: 20020059423Abstract: A technology for indicating and determining the availability of a multitude of application servers. The method comprises for each of application server a first step of inserting into an availability database a notification period defining an upper time limit for a repetition period of an availability signal, which is repeated as long as the application server is available. In a second step for each availability signal its corresponding time stamp is inserted as availability time into the availability database. The difference of the current time and a recent availability time compared to said notification period is representing a measure of availability for the application servers.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 13, 2001Publication date: May 16, 2002Applicant: IBMInventors: Frank Leymann, Dieter Roller

Publication number: 20020049906Abstract: The present invention provides digital signature techniques using an information terminal, such as a portable terminal, having limited calculation resources. In one embodiment, a signature demandant generates a document to be signed, and an agent receives this document. The agent generates summary text for this document, and transmits the summary text to a signatory, and the signatory displays the summary text using his or her information terminal. The signatory confirms the contents, employs a private key stored in his or her terminal to sign (encrypt) the summary text. The signatory thereafter transmits a signature value to the agent, who generates a signed document that includes the signature value. Finally, the signature demandant verifies (decrypts) the received signed document using the public key of the signatory and confirms the contents.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 15, 2001Publication date: April 25, 2002Applicant: IBMInventors: Hiroshi Maruyama, Michihara Kudoh, Kento Tamura

Publication number: 20020039109Abstract: An image display system includes a host side for executing an application and transmitting image data having a P dot width in a block unit with the number of m dots as the width of the block. A panel side is connected through a digital I/F line to the host side, which converts the image data having a P dot width by using magnification to produce data having an R dot width and then displays the image data. The panel side executes scaling by using a block having an integral value obtained by a R×m/P set as a dot width and a block having a dot width of an added integral value obtained by adding 1 to the integral value, and converts by magnification the image data received from the host side in block unit based on the executed scaling and displays the image data on a panel.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 4, 2001Publication date: April 4, 2002Applicant: IBMInventors: Johji Mamiya, Yoh Sugiuchi, Kazushi Yamauchi

Patent number: 6366945Abstract: The invention provides the mechanism, hereinafter referred to as Flexible Dynamic Partitioning (FDP), to allocate and reallocate resources among scheduling schemes of many types for multicomputing environments. Resources can include, but are not limited to, processors, disks and communications connections. Partitioning of resources can be initiated by both application and system triggers. Once dynamic partitioning is triggered, FDP allows a partition to invoke a set of resource allocation functions associated with its partition.
