Abstract: A multi-mode mobile communication device may include a processing device, a memory sub-system, a communication sub-system operable to communicate with the plurality of wireless access networks, and a protocol stack stored in the memory sub-system and executed by the processing device. The protocol stack may include a first access stratum, a second access stratum, a non-access stratum and an access stratum manager. The first access stratum may communicate with a first wireless access network via the communication sub-system. The second access stratum may communicate with a second wireless access network via the communication sub-system. The non-access stratum may communicate with a core network. The access stratum manager may interface the non-access stratum with the first and second access strata, and may be operable to activate the first access stratum to establish a communication link with the core network over the first wireless access network.

Abstract: Mobile devices use a PBX and application servers associated with the PBX to access voice services. Some mobile devices can support simultaneous data and voice channels, with the PBX and application server respectively. Where a data channel is unavailable, a control and status updating mechanism is needed. One approach is to signal over the voice channel with DTMF tones. DTMF tones should be timed to cause the tones to arrive at the mobile device during a pause period of a ring cycle. However, it also is desirable to avoid unnaturally long silence periods or other pauses during system usage. Aspects relate to enhancing a user experience in these situations and successful transmission/reception of control and status information over a voice channel using DTMF tones.

Abstract: A method of filtering data entries on a mobile device includes displaying a list of data entries on a display device of the mobile device. An indication of one of the data entries of the list is received at one of an input device and an auxiliary input device. Highlighting the data entry in response to the indication is performed. At an auxiliary input device, a pause of the indication is received. A filter for data entries that match the value of a predetermined field of the highlighted data entry is then executed. Results of the filter are displayed on the display device.

Abstract: A method includes determining first respective values representative of forces applied by a plurality of actuators to a touch-sensitive input device of an electronic device, controlling the actuators to cause the actuators to change the forces applied to the touch-sensitive input device, determining second respective values representative of the forces applied by the actuators to the touch-sensitive input device, and determining when there is a fault based on a change from the first respective values to the second respective values.

Abstract: A generic IM device/server protocol permits a single implementation of a IM application on client devices for communicating with different enterprise IM servers types. The protocol defines a server maintained tag to identify the currency of a contact list it is managing for a client device. The client device receives and persists the tag and provides it at login. The server automatically sends a contact list update only if the tag indicates the client devices contact list instance is not current. Presence updates may also be sent automatically at login and the client device need not separately request contact list or presence updates at login. The client device may be pre-provisioned with respective graphics, text and server capabilities for multiple server types. A specific IM configuration may be selected in response to service information.

Abstract: The present specification provides a method and apparatus for controlling a display based on signals received from one or more input devices. In one implementation, a mobile device with a touch screen and a touch pad is provided. A notification module executable on the mobile device configures the processor of the mobile device to control the display to generate a notification bar and a content region. The notification bar contains an icon representing each application from which a notification has been generated and a number adjacent the icon for indicating how may notifications have been generated by the application. The content region includes data associated with the notifications, and is arranged in rows beneath a header identifying the application. The layout of the applications may be varied as well as the priority of ordering the application sin the content region.

Abstract: The present specification relates generally to computing devices and more particular relates to a method and apparatus for electronically posting a graphic identifier to a plurality of servers. In one aspect, a mobile electronic device is equipped with a camera configured to capture a graphic. The mobile electronic device is further equipped to access at least one of a plurality of networking accounts hosted by servers connected to a network that also connects to said mobile electronic device. The mobile electronic device is configured to automatically post said graphic as an avatar associated with one or more of said networking accounts.

Abstract: A method of controlling a portable electronic device includes rendering a first virtual keyboard corresponding to a first language on a touch-sensitive display of the portable electronic device, rendering a second selectable feature corresponding to a second language when the first virtual keyboard is rendered on the touch-sensitive display, detecting selection of the second selectable feature corresponding to the second language, and rendering a second virtual keyboard corresponding to the second language in response to detecting the selection.

Abstract: A method, apparatus, and system for managing load in a server are provided. The server performs events for a plurality of electronic communication devices, each of the devices enabled to transmit to the server, at a respective given time and at a respective given frequency, a request to perform a respective event. The server receives the requests and determines that its load is above a threshold load value during a given time period when the requests arrive. In response, for a subset of the devices, the server transmits a delay time to each electronic communication device in the subset. The delay time causes each device in the subset to change the respective given time to a respective new time comprising the delay time added to the respective given time such that a next request is transmitted from each device in the subset to the server at the respective new time.

The processor is configured to wirelessly download an initial portion of a selected file folder from the server, with the server still having a remainder portion of the selected file folder available for downloading. The processor also generates search results by performing a local search of the initial portion of the file folder, and performs a remote search of the reminder portion of the selected file folder. The processor further presents the search results on the display.

Abstract: An apparatus, and an associated method, automatically calculates and assigns policy settings to be implemented at mobile stations. Information is collected relating to groups, such as groups within an enterprise, to which users of the mobile stations are members. Policy-setting conflicts between different groups, if the user is a member of more than one group, are reconciled, and the policy settings that are assigned are of reconciled settings.

Abstract: An apparatus, and an associated method, synchronizes directory services based on group membership. A synchronization scope is defined by the group membership to a specified nesting level of nestable groups. Groups within the synchronization scope are fetched and de-nested. And, once fetched, the members of the fetched and de-nested groups are fetched. The fetched object names are used to update the destination directory service.
