Abstract: A device and method for generating user notifications associated with tasks that are pending completion on a mobile device. When additional input is required from a user of the mobile device to complete performance of a task and is not being received from the user within a predefined time period, at least one form of user notification is generated. The particular form or forms of user notification are defined by a user profile associated with the user. User notifications may comprise visual, audible, and/or vibratory alerts, and different forms of these user notifications may be generated in a sequence. The volume of audible alerts or the period between periodic user notifications may vary over time.

Abstract: An electrical device is powered by a battery. The device includes transition phase determining circuitry operatively connected to the battery to determine that the battery has entered a transition phase based on the occurrence of a change in direction of current flowing through the battery. Battery capacity determining circuitry is operatively connected to the transition phase determining circuitry and configured to determine, in response to the transition phase determining circuitry determining that the battery is in the transition phase, a capacity of the battery based on a transition phase battery capacity model of capacity-vs.-voltage. The transition phase determining circuitry is further configured to determine an end of the transition phase based on the transition phase battery capacity model and a non-transition battery capacity model of capacity-vs.-voltage yielding the same capacity value for a given measured voltage of the battery.
Abstract: A scheme for facilitating accelerated network selection by a wireless user equipment (UE) device. In one exemplary embodiment, prior to performing a full band scan, the wireless UE device is operable to interrogate a list of networks with which the wireless UE device has registered at least once in a given period of time, wherein a network availability likelihood score may be associated with each of the list of networks. A particular network is selected from the list of networks based on its network availability likelihood score.
Abstract: Systems and methods for establishing a security-related mode of operation for computing devices. A security-related mode of operation is established through security mode configuration data. The security mode configuration data specifies the proper security mode or modes for operation of the computing devices.

Abstract: A method of facilitating the entry of information for a contact to be stored by an address book application of a handheld electronic device, wherein the information is entered into a plurality of fields. The method includes receiving first information in a first one of the fields, and determining whether the first information can be used to determine second information for entry in one of the fields. If it is determined that the first information can be used to determine the second information, the method includes entering the second information in either the first one of the fields or another one of the fields. Also, a handheld electronic device having one or more routines that are adapted to implement the method described above.
Abstract: A method for image data capture and storage is provided, where a reference and an image are optically captured and then processed. The reference is used to assist in determining a normalization operation that can be performed in order to correct for skew, rotation, and other events that can occur during capture of an image. The reference is also used to determine a data schema which is used for storing the normalized image.

Abstract: A system and method are provided to access advertisements on a mobile device. One or more merchants are provided as entries on a contact list. When one or more new advertisements are available from the merchants, a new occurrence indicator is displayed on the contact list icon on the home screen of the mobile device. Upon the mobile device receiving an input to open the contact list application that is associated with the contact list icon, the mobile device will display the contact list including the merchants listed therein. A new advertisement indicator associated with certain of the merchants notifies the user which merchants have new advertisements. Upon the mobile device receiving an input associated with one of merchants, an advertising display is presented showing the advertisement originating from the selected one of the merchants.
Abstract: A user equipment implements a method of processing indication messages, such as SCRI (signalling connection release indication) messages. The use equipment (UE) maintains a count of how many indication messages with a cause set have been sent by the UE while in at least one radio resource control (RRC) state. The counter is reset responsive to entering idle mode from at least one RRC state.

Abstract: A method for detecting a target cell by a mobile device, the method comprising storing traversed paths of the mobile device, the stored traversed paths each comprising information to identify cells in a sequence of cells traversed by the mobile device referenced to the target cell, compiling information identifying cells traversed by the device in real time to produce current path information, comparing the current path information to the stored traversed paths and inferring from the comparison a relative proximity of the mobile device to the target cell and adapting a search for the target cell based on the relative proximity.
Abstract: There is disclosed a method and device for operating an image database shared by a plurality of users. In an embodiment, each image captured by a user and stored in a shared image database is associating with the geographic coordinates of the location at which the image was captured. A search engine for the image database is configured to accept geographic coordinates as a search criterion for locating at least one captured image stored in the shared image database. The images having location coordinates within a predefined range of geographic coordinates is displayed to the user.
Abstract: A method and computing device for encoding an image according to a preset encoding parameter for the image. The encoding producing an encoded image having a file size. If it is determined that the file size exceeds a maximum file size and the encoding parameter does not meet a threshold, the encoding parameter is modified. The encoding, determining and modifying are repeated until the file size does not exceed a maximum file size or the encoding parameter meets the threshold.

Abstract: Eye blink avoidance for use in an electronic device having digital camera functionality, such as a mobile communications device, smartphone or superphone, is described. The device captures multiple images and determines, using eye blink detection, whether a subject in an image has closed eyes. This technology that allows a mobile phone equipped with a camera to avoid photographs of subjects with their eyes closed by capturing a plurality of images in succession and choosing the image with open eyes by using a best-effort eye blink detection algorithm to detect closed eyes in the faces of the subjects. Depending on user preferences, and configuration, the user may choose one or more of a plurality of images captured that do not have eyes closed or a best image can be selected by the device.
Abstract: A navigation module for a handheld communication device having a navigation pad, a chrome-like ring surrounding the navigation pad, an illumination ring surrounding the navigation pad, and at least one light source is optically coupled to at least the illumination ring. The illumination ring can be interposed between the chrome-like ring and the navigation pad. The chrome-like ring can be interposed between the illumination ring and the navigation pad. The light source can be a light emitting diode.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for estimating oscillator signal variation due to temperature and for providing an estimated frequency to a GPS receiver in order to assist the GPS receiver to acquire the signals quickly is disclosed. A temperature sensor is closely thermally coupled with the crystal oscillator in the GPS receiver and during GPS tracking mode, when the error in the oscillator signal is known with precision, outer bounds of TCXO frequency at given temperatures are maintained, which may correspond to rising and falling temperature conditions. During acquisition mode, an estimated frequency value is provided to the GPS receiver based on a determined average of these bounds. Optionally, an uncertainty factor associated with the frequency estimated may also be provided. The two bounds take into account the hysteresis effects of the oscillator signal drift due to temperature so that a more accurate initial frequency estimate can be provided to the GPS receiver, thus reducing its average time to first fix.
