Abstract: An electronic device for a mobile device and a mobile device comprising the electronic device are provided. The electronic device comprises: a battery including: a housing having a top surface, a bottom surface, and two or more side surfaces; one or more battery cells within the housing; and a battery interface positioned on a surface of the housing; and a smart card having a smart card interface positioned on a surface of the housing.
Abstract: A wireless-enabled smart card reader receives an Answer to Reset (ATR) from a smart card and transmits the ATR using a wireless communication link to a computing device without waiting for an ATR request from the computing device. The computing device may cache the ATR and use it for subsequent communication sessions with the smart card.
Abstract: Handheld mobile communication devices according to the disclosure have a closed position, in which the display member of the device covers at least a portion of the keys of on the keypad member of the device, and an open position, in which the keys are accessible and the device is operated. When the display member is in the open position, it forms an ergonomically desirable angle (e.g., on the order of about 155°) relative to the keypad member. However, unlike clamshell-type cellular phones, the display member does not simply flip open about a conventional pivot joint. Rather, it moves from the closed position, where it is parallel and adjacent to the keypad member, to the open, angled position through a sliding/sweeping motion; through an eccentric, “up-and-over” rotational motion; or through a combination sliding/“up-and-over” motion.
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for a user of a mobile wireless communications device to have the option of viewing security status messages in a large or small format depending upon the user's preferences, form factor of the mobile communications device, or the like. In accordance with an exemplary aspect of the invention, a user may opt to display status icons on one row of a display and include an abbreviated text associated with each icon that is displayed when a particular icon is highlighted by the user. If no icon is highlighted by the user, the most important status text (determined based on predetermined criteria) is displayed. The user has the option of switching to a large status display to view additional information relating to the status icons.

Abstract: A method of reducing waypoints representing a path defined along a route between two endpoints. The route includes a set of critical points including the endpoints and any decision points of the route intermediate the two endpoints. One or more waypoints of the path that are distal each critical point are eliminated, while retaining waypoints that are proximal each critical point. This enables the computation of a reduced waypoint path which provides accurate route-following in the vicinity of each critical point of the route.

Abstract: A communications system may include at least one mobile wireless communications device, and a wireless communications network for sending text messages thereto. More particularly, the at least one mobile wireless communications device may include a wireless transceiver and a controller for cooperating therewith for receiving text messages from the wireless communications network. It may further include a headset output connected to the controller. The controller may be for switching between a normal message mode and an audio message mode based upon a connection between the headset output and a headset. Moreover, when in the audio message mode, the controller may output at least one audio message including speech generated from at least one of the received text messages via the headset output.
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for processing voice call requests based on communication conditions of a mobile communication device are disclosed. In one illustrative example, a voice call request for a voice call is received through a user interface during an out-of-coverage condition of the mobile device. In response to the voice call request, when the out-of-coverage condition has existed for an out-of-coverage time period that is less than a first time period, a scanning operation is performed during a delay time period. If the out-of-coverage condition still exists upon expiration of the delay time period, a call denial indication and a call reminder prompt are produced in a visual display which indicates that the voice call could not be completed. If an in-coverage condition with a wireless network is identified during the delay time period, however, a voice call associated with the voice call request is initiated via the wireless network.
Abstract: In a method of sharing location information between a map application and a calendar application, the map application pulls calendar event locations from a calendar event store and presents these calendar event locations as suggested locations for the map application. Likewise, the calendar application pulls map locations from a map location data store and presents these map locations as suggested locations for calendar events. By sharing location information between the map application and the calendar applications, these applications become significantly more useful.

Abstract: In one illustrative scanning and decoding method, a signal strength level of an RF signal on an RF channel is measured for a plurality of RF channels of an RF band. The act of measuring a signal strength level is repeated at least one time to obtain at least one other signal strength level of the RF signal. Subsequently, an averaging function is completed with use of the signal strength level and the at least one other signal strength level for identifying an averaged signal strength level of the RF signal. At least one optimal RF signal is then identified based on the averaged signal strength levels of the RF signals on the RF channels. In between the repeated acts of measuring signal strength levels of the RF signals, and prior to identifying the averaged signal strength levels, control information is decoded on at least one of the RF channels and stored in memory.
