Abstract: Protection of real-time data such as voice data exchanged as packets between a mobile electronic device (10) and a VPN gateway (122) during a media session over a communications link (130) that includes a wireless network (132). A first VPN connection (136) is established between the mobile electronic device (10) and the VPN gateway (122) through the communications link (130), the first VPN connection (136) using key-based encryption to protect data exchanged therethrough. While the first VPN connection (136) is established, a second VPN connection (138) is established between the mobile electronic device (10) and the VPN gateway (122) through the communications link (130), the second VPN connection (138) using key-based encryption to protect data exchanged therethrough. Real-time data packets are exchanged between the mobile electronic device (10) and the VPN gateway (122) through the second VPN connection (138).

Abstract: Apparatus, and an associated method, for allocating communication resources in a data radio communication system, such as a communication system that provides for EDGE data communication services. A multi-carrier radio resource control logic element includes an analyzer that analyzes communication resource requirements to carry out a communication service, and a resource allocator allocates communication resources to be used by which to communicate the data. The communication resources are allocated across a plurality of mobile allocation index offsets, increasing the likelihood that increased amounts of communication resources can be allocated to perform a particular data communication service. A communication station that embodies the control logic element includes a wideband radio frequency transceiver from which the data is communicated during performance of the communication service.

Abstract: An improved method of learning character segments during text input enables facilitated text input on an improved handheld electronic device. In response to a series of inputs, segments and other objects are analyzed to generate a proposed character interpretation of the series of inputs. Responsive to detecting a replacement of a character of the character interpretation with another character, a character learning string comprising the another character and a number of additional characters of the character interpretation are stored as a candidate. In response to another series of inputs, another proposed character interpretation is generated. Responsive to detecting another replacement of a character of the another character interpretation with a different character, another character learning string comprising the different character and a number of characters of the another character interpretation are compared with the stored candidate.
Abstract: An apparatus and a method for facilitating paging of a mobile station that is capable of being paged either pursuant to an individually-directed page or pursuant to a broadcast page. The page that is generated is of bits that permit unambiguous determination by a mobile station when the mobile station receives an individually-directed page and when the mobile station receives a broadcast page. When bits that are to be used in a page are created at the network, a determination is made as to whether the bits correspond to the bits of a broadcast page. If the bits correspond, the bits of the generated bits are altered.

Abstract: Map labels are dynamically downloaded to a wireless communication device for efficiently labelling a map displayed on the device. A method of dynamically downloading map labels to a wireless communications device includes steps of determining a size of label data for an area of interest and dynamically downloading the label data for the area of interest based on the size of the label data. Optionally, map labels can be dynamically downloaded based on a label prioritization scheme that takes into account the current position of the device. Optionally, the size of the label data can be determined from a map data index.
Abstract: Systems, methods, and computer-readable media for managing end-to-end security over an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS)-enabled network are provided. A first subscriber module accesses an IMS network via an access gateway as a roaming network. The roaming network routes a request for a session from the first subscriber module from its P-CSCF to the I-CSCF of a third-party home network. The third party home network, in turn, routes the request to an S-CSCF implemented at the subscriber's home network, which comprises a second subscriber module. In this way, the session between the two subscriber modules is managed by the subscriber's S-CSCF rather than by a carrier's IMS network, and the subscriber may administer the security relationship without reliance on the carrier or the third party.

Abstract: A method of managing inbound communications received by a roaming wireless communications device entails enabling a user of the roaming wireless communications device to activate an inbound communications filter having filter criteria based on a current location of the user and a current location of a sender of an inbound communication. Once the wireless device has determined whether the inbound communication satisfies the filter criteria, the wireless device notifies the user that the inbound communication has been received provided that the inbound communication satisfies the filter criteria.
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for use in a wireless communication device for communications with a wireless communication network are described. In one illustrative technique, the wireless device sends a message to the wireless network which causes data connection parameters of a previous data connection to be reset. Preferably, the message is a disconnect frame. After the message is sent, the wireless device sends a request for a new data connection to the wireless network. Thereafter, the wireless device communicates data over the new data connection with use of new data connection parameters. The data connection parameters may include an encryption parameter. The actions may be performed in response to a communication failure, such as a device reset that occurs while being out-of-coverage.

Abstract: A method of displaying information on a display of a handheld electronic device includes steps of determining a target area onscreen to be visually magnified and causing a shape-changing zone of the display to change shape in the target area to visually magnify information displayed in the target area. The array of shape-changing zones on the touch-sensitive display can be independently actuated to form a magnifying lens over any onscreen object of interest. For example, this lens can be used to magnify a selected portion of a map, a portion of text or a specific point of interest. The lens can be used to magnify a route displayed on a map, or simply to zoom in on the current location of the device as displayed onscreen.
Abstract: A wireless communications device includes a radiofrequency transceiver having a wireless voice channel for transmitting and receiving voice communications and a separate wireless data channel for concurrently transmitting and receiving other data. The wireless communications device also includes a memory operatively connected to a processor for processing current location data received over the data channel from another communications device with which the wireless communications device is simultaneously communicating on the voice channel. The wireless communications further includes a display for displaying a phone screen during a voice call, the phone screen presenting call-related information. A map is displayed on the phone screen during the voice call, the map presenting a location current of the other communications device based on the current location data received over the data channel. Optionally, the map can also show the current location of the wireless communications device.
Abstract: Devices and methods for placing a call from a mobile device on one of a plurality of communication lines accessible at the mobile device are disclosed herein. After the initiation of a call at the mobile device is detected, an audio prompt is output to the user requesting a line selection. In at least one embodiment, the audio prompt is a voice prompt. After receiving user input identifying the line selection, a selected communication line is identified and the call is placed on the selected communication line. In at least one embodiment, the user input received is voice input.
Abstract: Dynamically downloading map data to a wireless communications device is achieved by determining a map data density for an area of interest and then dynamically downloading and optionally also dynamically displaying the map data for the area of interest based on the map data density. For areas of interest with low map data density, this technology has the effect of downloading more map data so that the map is displayed with more detail than would conventionally be obtained. Conversely, for areas of interest with excessively high map data density, dynamic downloading and display can reduce the onscreen map density for a less crowded map.
Abstract: An apparatus and a method for facilitating paging of a mobile station in a multi-user communication system. A page message is generated that includes page addresses of mobile stations that are to be paged. The page addresses are shortened addresses, if possible, that are selected to unambiguously identify the paged mobile stations. The page message includes page addresses of corresponding lengths and of unequal values.
Abstract: A system and method for facilitating the efficient operation of a mobile station as it transfers from communicating via one wireless data network to another. A session control node is coupled to the mobile node in such a manner that it selectively buffers data being transmitted to the mobile node, at least while the network transfer is being executed. When the mobile node had dropped its communication session with a first wireless network and established a new communication session with a second wireless network, the buffered data is read out and transmitted to the mobile node. The session control node may be coupled with a home network associated with the mobile node or a control node may be associated with the mobile node on an ad hoc basis.
