Abstract: Absorbent hydrogels are formed by reacting a protein meal base, a radical initiator and a polymerizable monomer. Optionally, a cross-linking agent and/or a radical accelerant, such as tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA) or sodium bisulfite (NaHSO3), is also added to the mixture. Preferably, the radical initiator is ammonium persulfate (APS) or potassium persulfate (KPS), and the cross-linking agent is preferably trifunctional trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate (TMPTMA) or methylene bis acrylamide (MBA). The polymerizable monomer is preferably acrylic acid, or a combination of acrylic acid and acrylamide. The as-formed hydrogel is washed in order to extract non-reactant components from the gel and then dried. The resultant absorbent and superabsorbent hydrogels have high water uptake ratios, and can be utilized for a variety of applications.

Abstract: Biological and chemical materials often contain many molecular bonds that connect carbon (C) hydrogen (H) atoms. These bonds covalently share electrons that can be optically activated by light. The incident light interaction with the C—H molecular bond spectrally shifts of the incident light proportional to the vibrational, or more precisely polarizability, constant of the electrons that bind the C—H atoms. This process is called Raman scattering. For C—H, C—H2 and C—H3 bonding schemes, the spectral shift is approximately 3000 cm?1 lower in energy from the incident light energy. Using this fundamental spectral shift coupled with optical microscopy, the ability to detect materials that possess C—Hx (where x=1, 2 or 3) is possible.
Abstract: A ZnO single crystal can be grown on a seed crystal substrate using a liquid phase epitaxial growth method by mixing and melting ZnO as a solute and a solvent, bringing the crystal substrate into direct contact with the resultant melt, and pulling up the seed crystal substrate continuously or intermittently. A self-supporting Mg-containing ZnO mixed single crystal wafer can be obtained as follows. A Mg-containing ZnO mixed single crystal is grown using a liquid phase epitaxial growth method by mixing and melting ZnO and MgO forming a solute and a solvent, then bringing a seed crystal substrate into direct contact with the resultant melt, and pulling up the seed crystal substrate continuously or intermittently. Then, the self-supporting Mg-containing ZnO mixed single crystal wafer is obtained by removing the substrate by polishing or etching, and polishing or etching a surface, on the side of ?c plane, of the single crystal grown by the liquid phase epitaxial growth method.

Abstract: A mobile node (MN), a WiMAX base station (BS), a Wi-Fi access point (AP) and a handover method therefore, for use in a heterogeneous wireless network system, are provided. The heterogeneous wireless network system comprises a gateway. The WiMAX BS and the Wi-Fi AP can interchange messages with each other via the gateway. There is an overlap service area between the WiMAX BS and the Wi-Fi AP. The MN accepts a network service, which is provided by the gateway, via the WiMAX BS. When the MN enters the overlap service area, it may handover to the Wi-Fi AP without interrupting the network service so that the gateway may provide the network service for the MN via the Wi-Fi AP.
Abstract: Problem An object is to provide a method for evaluating characteristics of individual Mach-Zehnder (MZ) interferometers in an optical modulator which includes a plurality of MZ interferometers. Means for Solving Problems The method comprises a step for adjusting a bias voltage of the MZ interferometer, a step for eliminating zero-order components, a step for measuring an output intensity and a step for evaluating characteristics. An optical modulator (1) includes the first MZ interferometer (2) and the second MZ interferometer (3). The first MZ interferometer (2) includes wave-branching section (5). Abstract: Provided are a CIGS solar cell and a method of fabricating the CIGS solar cell. In the method, a buffer layer exposing protrusions is formed. Then, a window electrode layer having an uneven surface conforming with the protrusions of the buffer layer is formed. Thus, an additional process for making the upper surface of a window electrode layer rough is unnecessary in order to decrease surface reflectance of incident sunlight and increase the solar cell efficiency, so that productivity can be improved.
