    Abstract: Provided herein is a large caliber terahertz wave generating device having a photonic crystal structure. The device includes a first electrode and a second electrode. The first electrode includes a first line pattern extending in a first direction, second line patterns coupled to the first line pattern and extending in a second direction, and third line patterns which are coupled to the first line pattern, extend in the second direction, are disposed between the second line patterns, and are longer than the second line patterns. The second electrode includes a fourth line pattern which extends in the first direction, fifth line patterns coupled to the fourth line pattern and extending in the second direction, and sixth line patterns which are coupled to the fourth line pattern, extend in the second direction, are disposed between the fifth line patterns, and are longer than the fifth line patterns.

In one embodiment, the method includes determining a power spectrum density for a plethysmographic waveform and identifying pulsus paradoxus based on the power spectrum density. The power spectrum density may include a first wave peak indicative of a respiratory rate and a second wave peak indicative of a heart rate. Pulsus paradoxus can be identified by comparing a height of the first wave peak and a height of the second wave peak.

    Abstract: A symmetrical MEMS accelerometer. The accelerometer includes a top half and a bottom half bonded together to form the frame and the mass located within the frame. The frame and the mass are connected through resilient beams. A plurality of hollowed parts and the first connecting parts are formed on the top and bottom side of the mass, respectively. The second connecting parts are formed on the top and bottom side of the frame, respectively. The resilient beams connect the first connecting part with the second connecting part. Several groups of comb structures are formed on top of the hollowed parts. Each comb structure includes a plurality of moveable teeth and fixed teeth. The moveable teeth extend from the first connecting part and the fixed teeth extend from the second connecting part. Capacitance is formed between the movable teeth and the fixed teeth. Since the accelerometer is symmetrical with a large mass, it has a large capacitance with a low damping force.

The manufacturing method for the semiconductor substrate may include an amorphous layer formation process in which a first amorphous layer is formed by modifying a surface of a support substrate and a second amorphous layer is formed by modifying a surface of a single-crystalline layer of a semiconductor. The manufacturing method may include a contact process in which the first amorphous layer and the second amorphous layer are contacted with each other. The manufacturing method may include a heat treatment process in which the support substrate and single-crystalline layer are heat-treated with the first amorphous layer and the second amorphous layer being in contact with each other.

    Abstract: A stacked switched capacitor (SSC) energy buffer circuit includes a switching network and a plurality of energy storage capacitors. The switching network need operate at only a relatively low switching frequency and can take advantage of soft charging of the energy storage capacitors to reduce loss. Thus, efficiency of the SSC energy buffer circuit can be extremely high compared with the efficiency of other energy buffer circuits. Since circuits utilizing the SSC energy buffer architecture need not utilize electrolytic capacitors, circuits utilizing the SSC energy buffer architecture overcome limitations of energy buffers utilizing electrolytic capacitors. Circuits utilizing the SSC energy buffer architecture (without electrolytic capacitors) can achieve an effective energy density characteristic comparable to energy buffers utilizing electrolytic capacitors.

    Abstract: In this invention, polyimidazole ligands (PILs) incorporating pendant imidazole moieties for nanocrystal binding and either sulfonatebetaine, carboxybetaine, or phosphocholinebetaine moieties for water-solubilization have been developed. Greatly enhanced stability of nanocrystals (both over time and in wide pH range) was achieved by incorporating multi-dentate imidazole moieties which provide strong coordination of the ligand to the nanocrystal surface and prevent aggregation of nanocrystals. Synthesis of betaine PILs was developed by modifying the synthesis of recently developed PEG containing poly imidazole ligands (PEG PILs). These nanocrystals are compact, water soluble, and biocompatible.

    Abstract: Hydrodynamic Trap Array. The array includes a serpentine bypassing channel including a plurality of trapping pockets disposed therein, the trapping pockets including a ramp entry portion to decrease flow velocity orthogonal to the trapping pocket to increase trapping efficiency. The relative fluid resistances of the trapping pockets and the serpentine bypassing channel are selected such that a slight majority of the flow is diverted to one of the trapping pockets. A pair of microfluidic bypass channels flank the array of traps allowing independent control of upstream and downstream pressures on each side of the array, thereby decoupling flow magnitude in the bypass channels from flow across the trapping pockets.
