    Abstract: A scaffold for hard tissue regeneration comprising an active ingredient for treating osteoporosis and a preparation method thereof. The scaffold for hard tissue regeneration is prepared by the steps of mixing a polyphenol-based natural substance containing Quercetein or Genistein involved in the activation of osteoblasts and osteoclasts and the biofunctional analogue thereof with a ceramic scaffold material and molding the mixture at room temperature into a three-dimensional scaffold. The biofunctional material included in the scaffold above may be sustain-released slowly over the long period of time so that the osteoblast activity is directly improved and at the same time the osteoclast activity is suppressed in the course of bone regeneration, to have the effect of improving bone regeneration.

    Abstract: A renewable energy-based hybrid bi-directionally interactive DC traction power supply system includes two traction substations. Each substation includes transformers, rectifiers, bidirectional AC-DC converters, a DC bus, a catenary, a steel rail and a section post. A DC bus between two adjacent traction substations is provided with a DC renewable energy system constructed by an electric vehicle charging-discharging system, a distributed generation and more than one low voltage DC microgrid.     Abstract: A capillary absorption spectrometer and process are described that provide highly sensitive and accurate stable absorption measurements of analytes in a sample gas that may include isotopologues of carbon and oxygen obtained from gas and biological samples. It further provides isotopic images of microbial communities that allow tracking of nutrients at the single cell level. It further targets naturally occurring variations in carbon and oxygen isotopes that avoids need for expensive isotopically labeled mixtures which allows study of samples taken from the field without modification. The process also permits sampling in vivo permitting real-time ambient studies of microbial communities.

    Abstract: A wearable robotic device configured to provide exercise for a human user. A primary use of the device is to address muscle and bone density loss for astronauts spending extended periods in microgravity. In one configuration the device applies a compressive force between a users feet and torso. This force acts very generally like gravity—forcing the user to exert a reactive force. The compressive force is precisely controlled using a processor running software so that a virtually endless variety of force applications are possible. For example, the wearable device can be configured to apply a gravity-simulating force throughout the device's range of motion. The robotic device may also be configurable for non-wearable uses. In these cases the robotic device may act as an exercise machine. The programmable nature of the force application allows the device to simulate weight-training devices and other useful exercise devices.

    Abstract: An electropermanent linear actuator has a stator, forcer, drive circuitry, and feedback control mechanism. The stator includes at least one electropermanent magnet with a coil that passes current pulses that change the magnetization of the magnet, which change persists after current is removed. The forcer moves with respect to the stator in response to the persistent changes in magnetization. Drive circuitry controls the position or speed of the actuator by controlling the timing, magnitude, and/or shape of the current pulses. The voltage and duration of pulses are of sufficient magnitude to cause the magnetization change to persist after cessation of current, with voltage and current returning substantially to zero between pulses. The feedback control mechanism determines, based on actuator velocity or position, when the next current pulse should be issued, pulse issuance being timed so that the actuator will continue to move throughout the absence of applied current between pulses.

    Abstract: A water-soluble insert for use in joining pipes, made of a material comprising a salt selected from the group consisting of KCl, Na Cl, and mixtures thereof; and MgO. Upon addition of a small amount of water to the material, the MgO reacts with hygroscopic impurities in the chloride salt to provide a material with superior properties. The insert is cast from the material, in general by being placed on a form and compressed. Also disclosed is the use of the insert in joining the ends of two pipes, especially pipes made from thermoplastic. The insert is placed in the matching pipe ends, which are then welded. After the join is complete, water is flowed through the pipe, dissolving the insert.
