Patent number: 9339312Abstract: An intramedullary nail has a proximal part for engagement with a proximal bone fragment and a distal part for engagement with a distal bone fragment. A motion assembly interconnects the parts and allows limited axial relative motion of the proximal and distal parts. This limited axial motion provides micromotion and in some embodiments also dynamization. The nail may comprise a stem for fastening to one bone fragment and an insert within the stem for fastening to the other bone fragment, the insert being adapted to guide insertion of a bone screw through the stem and to prevent relative rotation of the distal and proximal bone fragments. The motion assembly may include spring bias and/or damping means between the parts, possibly including one or more Belleville washers.Type: GrantFiled: November 18, 2014Date of Patent: May 17, 2016Assignee: CORK INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGYInventors: William Doherty, Patrick O'Connor, James Harty, Hannah Dailey, Charles Daly, Olive O'Driscoll

Patent number: 9340427Abstract: Provided is a method for preparing a carbon material based on an organic nanofilm using thermal evaporation, including: depositing a liquid polymer or polymer solution containing a polymer and a solvent onto a substrate, thereby forming an organic nanofilm; stabilizing the organic nanofilm so that the carbon atoms in the organic nanofilm have a cyclic arrangement; and carbonizing the stabilized organic nanofilm, thereby forming a carbon material, wherein the organic nanofilm is formed from the liquid polymer or polymer solution through a thermal evaporation process. The method provides a carbon material with a thickness, sheet resistance and surface roughness suitable for various applications and allows control thereof. In addition, the method uses a relatively inexpensive starting material, pitch, thereby reducing the overall production cost, and avoids a need for a complicated additional patterning operation, so that the carbon material is applied directly to electronic devices.Type: GrantFiled: February 20, 2013Date of Patent: May 17, 2016Assignee: KOREA INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGYInventors: Tae-Wook Kim, Han-Ik Joh, Sung Ho Lee

Patent number: 9343020Abstract: In exemplary implementations of this invention, light from a backlight is transmitted through two stacked LCDs and then through a diffuser. The front side of the diffuser displays a time-varying sequence of 2D images. Processors execute an optimization algorithm to compute optimal pixel states in the first and second LCDs, respectively, such that for each respective image in the sequence, the optimal pixel states minimize, subject to one or more constraints, a difference between a target image and the respective image. The processors output signals to control actual pixel states in the LCDs, based on the computed optimal pixel states. The 2D images displayed by the diffuser have a higher spatial resolution than the native spatial resolution of the LCDs. Alternatively, the diffuser may be switched off, and the device may display either (a) 2D images with a higher dynamic range than the LCDs, or (b) an automultiscopic display.Type: GrantFiled: August 5, 2014Date of Patent: May 17, 2016Assignee: Massachusetts Institute of TechnologyInventors: Felix Heide, Gordon Wetzstein, James Gregson, Ramesh Raskar, Wolfgang Heidrich

Patent number: 9339719Abstract: A ski binding device having a plate adapted to engage the ski binding, in which the plate has a heel end and a toe end, and a heel absorption mechanism is adapted to absorb excessive lateral pivoting force from the heel of a ski boot. A restrictor biases the heel into engagement with a heel receptacle. A dual pivot engages the toe end of the plate for permitting both downward movement of the heel end and lateral movement of the heel end out of alignment with the ski. The lateral pivoting force corresponds to release of potentially harmful forces. The restrictor is responsive to upward force from the toe end, as results from disproportionate backweighting of a skier. The restrictor disengages the heel end from the heel receptacle based on a predetermined release force, and permit lateral outward displacement of the heel end upon disengagement of the heel.Type: GrantFiled: August 1, 2014Date of Patent: May 17, 2016Assignee: Worcester Polytechnic InstituteInventors: Christopher A. Patent number: 9339397Abstract: An artificial foot and ankle joint consists of a curved leaf spring foot member having a heel extremity and a toe extremity, and a flexible elastic ankle member that connects the foot member for rotation at the ankle joint. An actuator motor applies torque to the ankle joint to orient the foot when it is not in contact with the support surface and to store energy in a catapult spring that is released along with the energy stored in the leaf spring to propel the wearer forward. A ribbon clutch prevents the foot member from rotating in one direction beyond a predetermined limit position. A controllable damper is employed to lock the ankle joint or to absorb mechanical energy as needed. The controller and sensing mechanisms control both the actuator motor and the controllable damper at different times during the walking cycle for level walking, stair ascent, and stair descent.Type: GrantFiled: May 21, 2014Date of Patent: May 17, 2016Assignee: Massachusetts Institute of TechnologyInventors: Hugh M.
