Abstract: A sensor, system, and method of making a sensor are disclosed. The sensor includes a solid polymer material, and a dopant-containing region of discrete thickness at a surface of the solid polymer. The method of creating the sensor includes impregnating the polymer material with the dopant by contact with a solvent solution containing the dopants. A polymer/solvent gel-layer, whose depth increases with impregnation time, forms after contact of the polymer material in the solvent solution. The dopants are diffused into the polymer material, forming a dopant-containing region of discrete thickness at a surface of the solid polymer.

Abstract: The present invention provides: an electrode-supporting type of gas-separation membrane module for selectively effecting the passage of a gas via an electron exchange reaction due to a coupling-material layer and gas exchange via an ion-conducting separation layer; a tubular structure of same; a production method for the tubular structure; and a hydrocarbon-reforming method using the gas-separation membrane module. The present invention is advantageous in that outstanding chemical and mechanical durability can be ensured by using a fluorite-based ion-conducting membrane which is chemically stable in CO2 and H2O atmospheres in particular, at high temperature, and in that a pure gas can be produced inexpensively since the passage of gas occurs due to an internal circuit even without applying a voltage from the outside.

Abstract: In illustrative implementations of this invention, light sources illuminate a surface with multi-spectral, multi-directional illumination that varies in direction, wavelength, coherence and collimation. One or more cameras capture images of the surface while the surface is illuminated under different lighting conditions. One or more computers take, as input, data indicative of or derived from the images, and determine a classification of the surface. Based on the computed classification, the computers output signals to control an I/O device, such that content displayed by the I/O device depends, at least in part, on the computed classification. In illustrative implementations, this invention accurately classifies a wide range of surfaces, including transparent surfaces, specular surfaces, and surfaces with few features.

Abstract: Disclosed are methods of single-site-specific cysteine modification on peptide/protein molecules under physiologically relevant conditions. This process features several significant advantages over existing methods of peptide modification, such as specificity towards thiols over other nucleophiles (e.g., amines, hydroxyls), excellent functional group tolerance, and mild reaction conditions. Especially important is the specificity observed for thiols appearing in an X-Cys-Pro-X sequence over other thiols or disulfides, where X is Phe, Trp, or Tyr; under the inventive conditions, other cysteines or reactive functional groups on the same peptide/protein chain are not functionalized.

Abstract: Texture features of images are calculated for recognition of pixel sets in the images as one category among multiple candidate categories. For example, wavelet transformation is applied to obtain a wavelet vector.
