    Abstract: The invention provides a biocompatible silicone implant that can be securely affixed to living tissue through interaction with integral membrane proteins (integrins). A silicone article containing a laser-activated surface is utilized to make the implant. One example is an implantable prosthesis to treat blindness caused by outer retinal degenerative diseases. The device bypasses damaged photoreceptors and electrically stimulates the undamaged neurons of the retina. Electrical stimulation is achieved using a silicone microelectrode array (MEA). A safe, protein adhesive is used in attaching the MEA to the retinal surface and assist in alleviating focal pressure effects. Methods of making and attaching such implants are also provided.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a preparation method for patternization of metal electrodes in silicon solar cells. After disposing an amorphous silicon layer on a silicon substrate processed by diffusion, laser light is projected on the amorphous silicon layer for patternization, and transforming the amorphous silicon with low optical conductivity into polysilicon with high optical conductivity thanks to the recrystallization process of the laser light. Then, after immersing the amorphous silicon layer in plating liquid, metal electrode can be formed accurately at the spots of the amorphous silicon layer patterned by laser light. No external voltage is required; plating reaction is induced by illumination directly.

The cBN thin film is formed on the nanocrystalline diamond thin film by using a physical vapor deposition process, wherein a reaction gas supplied when the deposition of a thin film occurs is a mixed gas of argon (Ar) with nitrogen (N2), and hydrogen (H2) is added to the reaction gas at a time after the deposition of a thin film occurs.

    Abstract: A miniature thermoelectric energy harvester and a fabrication method thereof. Annular grooves are fabricated on a low-resistivity silicon substrate to define silicon thermoelectric columns, an insulating layer is fabricated on the annular grooves, a thermoelectric material is filled in the annular grooves to form annular thermoelectric columns, and then metal wirings, passivation layers and supporting substrates are fabricated, thereby completing the fabrication process. The silicon thermoelectric column using a silicon base material simplifies the fabrication process. The fabrication of the thermocouple structure is one thin-film deposition process, which simplifies the process. The use of silicon as a component of the thermocouple has a high Seebeck coefficient. The use of vertical thermocouples improves the stability. Since the thermocouple structure is bonded to the upper supporting substrate and lower supporting substrate by wafer-level bonding, the fabrication efficiency is improved.

    Abstract: A tactile sensor includes a photosensing structure, a volume of elastomer capable of transmitting an image, and a reflective skin covering the volume of elastomer. The reflective skin is illuminated through the volume of elastomer by one or more light sources, and has particles that reflect light incident on the reflective skin from within the volume of elastomer. The reflective skin is geometrically altered in response to pressure applied by an entity touching the reflective skin, the geometrical alteration causing localized changes in the surface normal of the skin and associated localized changes in the amount of light reflected from the reflective skin in the direction of the photosensing structure. The photosensing structure receives a portion of the reflected light in the form of an image, the image indicating one or more features of the entity producing the pressure.
