Abstract: The optical pressure-sensing system essentially comprises a light source, a resonant cavity and a detector, where the light source is used for generating a light with a predetermined wavelength, the resonant cavity includes a stationary wall with a stationary plane and a movable wall with a movable plane, and the detector is used for detecting a resonated light generated in the resonant cavity by resonating the light between the stationary plane and the movable plane. According to the present invention, a first light is generated and resonated in a resonant cavity to amplify the interaction between the first light and gas molecules in the resonated cavity. The interaction is measured, and the pressure in the resonant cavity is calculated based on the interaction. The interaction between the light and gas molecules in the resonant cavity may change the polarization angle or the phase of the light.

Abstract: The present invention discloses a low-cost light source for optical transmission systems and optical networks based on wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) technology. A light source in accordance with the present invention is implemented by externally injecting a narrow-band incoherent light into a Fabry-Perot laser diode (F-P LD). After injection of narrow-band incoherent light, the output of F-P LD becomes wavelength-selective rather than multi-mode and the output wavelength of F-P LD coincide with the peak wavelength of the injected incoherent light. Multi-channel WDM light sources according to the present invention can be implemented using a single broadband incoherent light source and plurality of F-P LDs. An optical transmission system for upstream signal transmission in an passive optical network using the light source according the present invention is also disclosed.

Abstract: An integrated optic polarization splitter, includes a pair of waveguide elements with a first waveguide element having a horizontal orientation and a second waveguide element having a vertical orientation formed from a plurality of waveguide core layers. The first and second waveguide elements are intersected or nearly intersected at one end of the structure and separated at the other end of the structure and the transition there between is made to be adiabatic. The waveguide elements receive an optical signal having both a TE component and a TM component. The TE component propagates along the horizontally oriented waveguide element and the TM component propagates along the vertically oriented waveguide element.
Abstract: Featured are devices and methods for administering a therapeutic medium to the posterior segment of an eye including instilling or disposing the therapeutic medium sub-retinally. Such instillation is accomplished by providing a reservoir containing a therapeutic medium to which is fluidly coupled a cannula and inserting a portion of the cannula sub-retinally, whereby the therapeutic medium within the reservoir is coupled to and dispersed subretinally via the cannula.
Abstract: This invention describes a first report on the synthesis of certain 124I-labelled photosensitizers related to chlorines and bacteriochlorins with long wavelength absorption in the range of 660-800 nm. In preliminary studies, these compounds show a great potential for tumor detection by positron emission tomography (PET) and treatment by photodynamic therapy (PDT). The development of tumor imaging or improved photodynamic therapy agent(s) itself represent an important step, but a dual function agent (PET imaging and PDT) provides the potential for diagnostic body scan followed by targeted therapy.

Abstract: High throughput screening of crystallization of a target material is accomplished by simultaneously introducing a solution of the target material into a plurality of chambers of a microfabricated fluidic device. The microfabricated fluidic device is then manipulated to vary the solution condition in the chambers, thereby simultaneously providing a large number of crystallization environments. Control over changed solution conditions may result from a variety of techniques, including but not limited to metering volumes of crystallizing agent into the chamber by volume exclusion, by entrapment of volumes of crystallizing agent determined by the dimensions of the microfabricated structure, or by cross-channel injection of sample and crystallizing agent into an array of junctions defined by intersecting orthogonal flow channels.

Abstract: In the hardware-efficient demodulator for a CDMA adaptive antenna array mechanism of a mobile radio communication system, a correlators bank receives digital baseband signals received through an antenna array of a base station and computes correlation values with a local code sequence. A beamformer receives the digital baseband signals and the correlation values from the correlators bank and calculates beamforming weight vectors. A searchers bank receives the digital baseband signals and calculates an initial acquisition and reliable timing information for a multipath search by a common work with the beamformer, which uses a beamforming algorithm. A beamforming complex multiplier for a finger performs a complex multiplication for the beamforming weight vectors and the digital baseband signals, and sums up them.
