  • Patent number: 7082235
Abstract: A strip loaded waveguide comprises a slab and a strip, wherein the strip is separated from the slab. Nevertheless, a guiding region is provided for propagating an optical mode and this guiding region extends both within the strip and the slab. A layer of material having an index of refraction lower than that of the strip and the slab may be disposed between and separate the strip and the slab. In one embodiment, the slab comprises a crystalline silicon, the strip comprises polysilicon or crystalline silicon, and the layer of material therebetween comprises silicon dioxide. Such waveguides may be formed on the same substrate with transistors. These waveguides may also be electrically biased to alter the index of refraction and/or absorption of the waveguide.

  • Patent number: 7081674
Abstract: The present invention provides a diffusion barrier useful in an integrated circuit, which serves to prevent the migration of material from a conductive layer to the underlying substrate and further provides improved adhesion of the conductive layer to the substrate. The diffusion barrier comprises a polymer which is a polyelectrolyte, having both cationic and anionic groups along its backbone chain. Preferred polyelectolyte barriers are polyethyleneimine (PEI) and polyacrylic acid (PAA). Other polyelectrolytes may be used, such as those that contain SH—OH— aromatic groups, or those that can interact with either the metal or the adjacent layers via covalent interactions and cross-linking (e.g., POMA, PSMA). The polymeric layer may be applied in two coatings, so that the amine side chains contact the dielectric (e.g. silicon) substrate and the acidic groups are adjacent to the overlying metallic interconnect (e.g. copper).

  • Publication number: 20060157617
Abstract: A non-rigid airship has a hull with a plurality of lobes formed therein. The lobes decrease the radius of curvature of the hull, thereby reducing the stress on the hull due to the pressurized lifting gas contained therein. The reduced stress allows the hull to be constructed from a lighter weight material, thus reducing the mass of the hull, and enabling the airship to carry more cargo. The lobes can be pulled-in to reduce the cross-sectional area of the airship, thereby potentially reducing its aerodynamic drag. Flexible retaining members are used to partially delineate lobes. Load lines in the form of a polygon are used to pull in lobes.

  • Publication number: 20060159465
Abstract: Described are an optical transmitter and a method for generating a single sideband optical signal. The method includes generating a data signal at a first power level and at a second power level with a predetermined ratio being defined between the power levels. The data signal at the first power level is applied to a phase module disposed in a laser cavity of a semiconductor laser to generate a frequency modulated laser signal having a double sideband. The intensity of the frequency modulated laser signal is modulated in response to the data signal at the second power level to yield the single sideband optical signal. Optical transmitters implementing the method have an increased manufacturing yield and reliability, a lower fabrication cost and a decreased size compared to other optical single sideband optical transmitters.
