  • Publication number: 20130023269
Abstract: A method and system for performing handover in a third generation (3G) long term evolution (LTE) system are disclosed. A source evolved Node-B (eNode-B) makes a handover decision based on measurements and sends a handover request to a target eNode-B. The target eNode-B sends a handover response to the source eNode-B indicating that a handover should commence. The source eNode-B then sends a handover command to a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU). The handover command includes at least one of reconfiguration information, information regarding timing adjustment, relative timing difference between the source eNode-B and the target eNode-B, information regarding an initial scheduling procedure at the target eNode-B, and measurement information for the target eNode-B. The WTRU then accesses the target eNode-B and exchanges layer 1/2 signaling to perform downlink synchronization, timing adjustment, and uplink and downlink resource assignment based on information included in the handover command.

  • Patent number: 8359520
Abstract: Detecting, avoiding and/or correcting problematic puncturing patterns in parity bit streams used when implementing punctured Turbo codes is achieved without having to avoid desirable code rates. This enables identification/avoidance of regions of relatively poor Turbo code performance. Forward error correction comprising Turbo coding and puncturing achieves a smooth functional relationship between any measure of performance and the effective coding rate resulting from combining the lower rate code generated by the Turbo encoder with puncturing of the parity bits. In one embodiment, methods to correct/avoid degradations due to Turbo coding are implemented by puncturing interactions when two or more stages of rate matching are employed.

  • Patent number: 8351371
Abstract: A method and apparatus for minimizing redundant enhanced uplink (EU) allocation requests and fault-isolating EU transmission failures that occur between a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) and a Node-B. The WTRU transmits an enhanced dedicated channel (E-DCH) allocation request to the Node-B over an uplink (UL) EU channel. In one embodiment, if E-DCH allocation cannot be provided within a predetermined time period, the Node-B sends an acknowledgement message to the WTRU via a downlink (DL) EU signaling channel without sending E-DCH allocation information. The request is queued in the Node-B and the WTRU refrains from transmitting the same request until after the time period expires or resources become available. In another embodiment, appropriate actions are taken to correct EU transmission failures by determining whether an E-DCH allocation request was unsuccessfully delivered via the UL EU channel or whether channel allocation information was unsuccessfully delivered via the DL EU signaling channel.

  • Patent number: 8341408
Abstract: A system and method for providing variable security levels in a wireless communication network. The present invention optimizes the often conflicting demands of highly secure wireless communications and high speed wireless communications. According to a preferred embodiment of the present invention, various security sensors are scanned to determine the likely presence of an intruder within a predetermined trust zone. If an intruder is likely present, the security level is changed to the highest setting, and consequently a lower data rate, while the intruder is identified. If the identified intruder is in fact a trusted node, the security level is returned to a lower setting. If the identified intruder is not a trusted node, the security level is maintained at an elevated state while the intruder is within the trust zone.

  • Publication number: 20120320866
Abstract: A method and apparatus for processing enhanced uplink data is disclosed. A request for uplink resources is transmitted, wherein the request for uplink resources is a request to transmit data over an enhanced dedicated channel (E-DCH). An uplink scheduling grant is received in response to the request for uplink resources. Data from medium access control for dedicated channel (MAC-d) flows is multiplexed into a medium access control for enhanced uplink (MAC-e) protocol data unit (PDU). A transport format combination (TFC) is selected for transmission of the MAC-e PDU. The MAC-e PDU is transmitted over the E-DCH using an identified hybrid automatic repeat request (H-ARQ) process. Feedback information is received in response to the transmitted MAC-e PDU. The MAC-e PDU is retransmitted using the identified H-ARQ process on a condition that the feedback information indicates a negative acknowledgment (NACK) of the MAC-e PDU transmission.

  • Patent number: 8331313
Abstract: The present invention modifies existing media independent handover (MIH) function (MIHF) frame format as defined by the IEEE 802.21 standard. In one embodiment, the variable load of the MIHF frame is modified to eliminate the MIHF variable header by defining the MIHF identification (ID) field and the session ID field as fixed fields in the MIHF fixed header. Thus, the MIHF variable load is only made up of the MIHF payload. In another embodiment, a field such as an information element (IE), a header, or MIH service data such as a command or an event, is represented by a type field, a length field and a value field (TLV). The length of the value field is exactly 128 octets, and the length field only occupies one octet.

  • Patent number: 8331943
Abstract: Measurement opportunities are provided to a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) operating with a switched beam antenna in a CDMA wireless communication system. The switched beam antenna is a smart antenna generating a plurality of directional beams and an omni-directional beam. The bursty nature of packet data transmission generates periods of inactivity or low traffic during a call. The WTRU switches to antenna beams other than the selected antenna beam for receiving and measuring signals during these periods of inactivity or low traffic. Moreover, if the network has knowledge of the fact the WTRU is operating using a switched beam antenna, the network can use this information when making decisions on channel allocations, thus providing frequent measurement opportunities to the WTRU in order to support the switched beam antenna operation.

  • Patent number: 8331315
Abstract: A wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) may include two or more modems, each configured to link to a different network, and a media independent handover (MIH) client. An application programming interfaces (API) may provide the MIH client with mechanisms to receive information about links, control the modems for handover, discover a MIH server and IP multimedia system nodes, trigger mobile IP handover, etc. If a link has been successfully established, the MIH client may start a MIH session. When the modem indicates that a connection is going to be terminated, the MIH client may activate the second modem for handover. If the first modem indicates that a link parameter has crossed a threshold, the MIH client may send signal measurements to a MIH server. After receiving a media independent handover switch request, the MIH client may initiate handover to the second network.

  • Patent number: 8332702
Abstract: A method and apparatus for hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) transmission are disclosed. If a packet has not been successfully transmitted, it is determined whether an HARQ early termination condition is met. If the HARQ early termination condition is met, the HARQ process is terminated and the packet is discarded at the HARQ level. The HARQ early termination condition is met if a positive acknowledgement (ACK) has not been received until the number of retransmissions reaches a predetermined limit that is dynamically configured based on channel condition, measurement, etc. Alternatively, the HARQ early termination condition is met if a transmit power required for successful transmission of the packet is much higher than an actual transmit power. Alternatively, the HARQ early termination condition is met if a transport format combination (TFC) selected for retransmission is different from an optimal TFC. A higher layer may be notified of the early HARQ termination.
