  • Patent number: 8498668
Abstract: In a radio access network, novel systems and methods reduce processing delay, and improve integration with IP networks, by separating user data from connection management and control data at a Node B or at a base station. The user data are routed to an IP (Internet Protocol) switch, whereas the connection management and control data are routed to a centralized radio network controller (RNC). Pursuant to a second embodiment of the invention, a centralized RNC provides improved radio resource management (RRM) functionality by handing all connection management and control data for a plurality of Node B's, thereby simplifying the switching of user data throughout the radio access network. Pursuant to a third embodiment of the invention, a smart IP switch is equipped to switch user data without core network (CN) involvement. Downlink user data are switched independently of uplink user data.

  • Patent number: 8488650
Abstract: A CDMA communication system includes a signal processor which encodes voice and nonvoice signals into data at various rates, e.g. data rates of 8 kbps, 16 kbps, 32 kbps, or 64 kbps as I and Q signals. The signal processor selects a specific data rate depending upon the type of signal, or in response to a set data rate. When the signal is received and demodulated, the baseband signal is at the chip level. Both the I and Q components of the signal are despread using the conjugate of the pn sequence used during spreading, returning the signal to the symbol level. Carrier offset correction is performed at the symbol level. A lower overall processing speed is therefore required.

  • Patent number: 8488457
Abstract: A wireless communication method and apparatus for transferring buffered enhanced uplink (EU) data from a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU), i.e., a mobile station, to a Node-B. The EU data is generated and stored in a buffer of the WTRU. The WTRU transmits a message to the Node-B including a request for a desired transport format combination (TFC) or data traffic indicator. The Node-B schedules one or more allowed EU data transmissions between the WTRU and the Node-B by transmitting an EU data scheduling message to the WTRU. The WTRU transmits all of the EU data stored in the buffer to the Node-B if the allowed EU data transmissions are sufficient to support transmission of all of the EU data stored in the buffer. Otherwise, the WTRU transmits a portion of the EU data along with the desired TFC or detailed traffic volume measurement (TVM) information to the Node-B.

  • Patent number: 8477695
Abstract: In a wireless communication system including a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) and a Node-B, an uplink (UL) scheduling request is transmitted by the WTRU to the Node-B when the WTRU has buffered (user) data to transmit to the Node-B, but needs to have a scheduling grant for UL data transmission. The WTRU determines whether to transmit to the Node-B a short-version UL scheduling request or a full-version UL scheduling request, whereby the short-version UL scheduling request uses less channel resources than the full-version UL scheduling request by omitting information pertaining to WTRU status parameters. The short-version UL scheduling request is a one-bit indicator or a multi-bit indicator that indicates an amount of scheduling grants or resources requested. The full-version UL scheduling request includes at least one of a WTRU buffer status and a WTRU link budget.

  • Patent number: 8462876
Abstract: A wireless communications handset configured to receive a multipath spread spectrum signal comprises a first antenna and a second antenna. A first receiver is coupled to the first antenna and a second receiver is coupled to the second antenna. A delay device is coupled to the first receiver and delays the portion of the multipath signal received by the first antenna. The delayed signal and the in-phase portion of the signal are then combined in a combining device. A despreader coupled to the combining devices generates a magnitude value of the combined signal. The current magnitude value is then compared to one or more previous magnitude values to determine if the delay should be increased or decreased. A comparison device outputs a comparison signal based on the current and previous magnitude values and provides the comparison signal to the delay device to adjust the delay appropriately.
