  • Patent number: 8589777
Abstract: A web-based system, method and program product are provided for adding content to a content object stored (e.g., a custom compilation or prepublished work) in a data repository as a group of hierarchically related content entities. Each noncontainer content object is preferably stored as a separate entity in the data repository. Each content entity is also stored as a row in a digital library index class as a collection of attributes and references to related content entities and containers. As the user selects desired objects for inclusion in a content object, the system arranges the objects hierarchically, e.g., into volumes, chapters and sections according to the order specified by the user. The system then creates a file object (e.g., a CBO) defining the content object that contains a list or outline of the container and noncontainer entities selected, their identifiers, order and structure. This file object is stored separately in the data repository.

  • Patent number: 8589834
Abstract: An embodiment includes an integrated circuit (IC) for using direct memory access (DMA) to initialize a programmable logic device (PLD), the IC operably coupled to the PLD. The IC includes an input/output (I/O) interface and a PLD interface. The I/O interface converts a signal format between the IC and the PLD. The PLD interface includes a configuration and status register, a data buffer, and pacing logic. The configuration and status register is adapted to manipulate a control line of the PLD to configure the PLD in a programming mode via the I/O interface. The data buffer temporarily holds PLD programming data received from a DMA control at a DMA speed. The pacing logic controls the speed of transmitting the PLD programming data to a programming port on the PLD via the I/O interface at a PLD programming speed.

  • Patent number: 8587892
Abstract: Method for operating a storage device with a tape and a head wherein the head comprises a first and a second read element. Each read element is operable to detect servo-pattern of a particular servo band. The first and the second read element are arranged such that the tape at first passes one of both read elements and subsequently passes the other of both read elements when the tape moves in a predetermined longitudinal direction. A tape transport direction of the tape along the longitudinal direction is determined. The first read element is selected dependent on the determined tape transport direction, when the determined tape transport direction represents a direction where the tape at first passes the first read element and subsequently the second read element. Otherwise the second read element is selected. A position error signal is determined dependent on the selected read element.

  • Patent number: 8587383
Abstract: A method establishes an initial voltage in a ring oscillator and a logic circuit of an integrated circuit device. Following this, the method enables the operating state of the ring oscillator. After enabling the operating state of the ring oscillator, the method steps up to a stressing voltage in the ring oscillator. The initial voltage is approximately one-half the stressing voltage. The stressing voltage creates operating-level stress within the ring oscillator. The method measures the operating-level frequency within the ring oscillator using an oscilloscope (after stepping up to the stressing voltage).

  • Patent number: 8589778
Abstract: There is disclosed a system and method for processing multi-modal collaboration. In an embodiment communication received from multiple modes are converted into a common format. Using various conversion modules, the communication may be converted into a common electronic text format (e.g. ASCII text) that contains keywords. Once the communication is converted into a common format, the information contained in the communication may be analyzed and consolidated into related areas or topics. The consolidated information may then be searched for common references in order to augment the information context.

  • Patent number: 8589912
Abstract: A method, system and program are provided for managing the installation and configuration of a software product by using a proxy service to loosely couple the installation and/or configuration of constituent modules within the installation/configuration flow of the software product. The proxy service invokes the installation/configuration processing of an existing software component, thereby reducing the complexity associated with installing new component installation processes every time a component is to be supported, especially where the software products and new component(s) do not share the same installation/configuration platforms.

  • Patent number: 8589728
Abstract: A computer program product includes computer usable program code embodied on a computer usable storage medium for performing a method of managing the workload in a computer system having one or more semi-redundant hardware components are provided. The method comprises detecting loss or degradation of the level of performance of one or more of the semi-redundant hardware components, identifying hardware components that are affected by the loss or degradation of the one or more semi-redundant components, migrating a critical job from an affected hardware component to an unaffected hardware component, and performing less-critical jobs on an affected hardware component. Loss or degradation of the semi-redundant component reduces the capacity of affected hardware components in the computer system without entirely disabling the computer system. Optionally, the semi-redundant hardware component may be selected from a memory module, CPU core, Ethernet port, power supply, fan, disk drive, and an input output port.

  • Patent number: 8589412
Abstract: One embodiment of the disclosure can represent within a K-partite graph, weighting factors between a set of identifier elements and a set of data elements. The K-partite graph can also represent weighting factors between the set of identifier elements and a set of metadata elements. In the K-partite graph, the set of identifier elements, the set of data elements, and the set of metadata elements are independent and disjoint sets such that no two vertices within a same set are adjacent. A score vector can be calculated that ranks each data element in a set of data elements. The score vector can be calculated from the weighting factors. At least one data element from the set of data elements can be selected using the score vector and a predetermined selection criterion.

  • Patent number: 8589067
Abstract: A method and apparatus for mapping a moving direction by using sounds for people with visual impairments, in which a moving direction can be expressed multi-dimensionally by using sound information and can effectively assist people with visual impairments and the like in navigation tasks. A moving direction of a person carrying a device configured to output sounds is mapped by using a combination of sounds outputted from the device. A plurality of different sound information pieces are stored in association with three or more predetermined directions, respectively, a current position of the moving target device is identified, and then a moving direction of the device is identified. A sound obtained by combining two sounds in a ratio according to the identified moving direction is outputted on the basis of sound information pieces associated respectively with two adjacent directions sandwiching the identified moving direction among the predetermined directions.

  • Patent number: 8589538
Abstract: Storage workload balancing in a data processing environment is provided by detecting automatically overloaded storage providers and automatically transferring storage subsystems from overloaded storage providers to storage providers with available capacity. This automatic workload balancing prevents some storage providers experiencing reduced performance while other available storage providers have unused excess capacity. If all of the available storage providers are overloaded, a new storage provider may be added automatically to a server and operating system instance that is best able to handle extra work.
