Patent number: 8119047Abstract: A non-rotating drill pipe protector sleeve is molded in situ around a drill pipe tubing. The inner surface of the molded protector sleeve can be shaped to form a fluid bearing during use. Fixed stop collars may be molded in situ in the same mold and bonded to the tubing at opposing ends of the molded sleeve. Alternatively, a flexible sleeve liner made from a material having a hardness less than that of the sleeve's molding material can be used as a mold insert around the tubing. The liner can be bonded to the molded sleeve material when the sleeve is molded around the liner. The interior surface of the liner can be shaped to form a fluid bearing for the inside surface of the molded sleeve. Reinforcing inserts and wear pads can be placed in the mold region of the sleeve. Chemical and/or mechanical bonding is provided between the liner reinforcement and the material from which the sleeve is molded. Reinforcing inserts and wear pads also can be placed in the mold regions for the stop collars.Type: GrantFiled: March 5, 2008Date of Patent: February 21, 2012Assignee: WWT International, Inc.Inventors: N. Patent number: 8121352Abstract: The present invention comprises a method and an apparatus for three dimensional modeling to allow dense depth maps to be recovered, without previous knowledge of the surface reflectance, from only a single pair of stereo images. Several initial steps are performed for stereo and radiometric calibration and rectification for obtaining accurate results. The apparatus for the stereo images acquisition includes internal light sources, these are automatically commuted by a illumination control in order to fulfill the reciprocity property, a stereo camera head composed by the necessary optics to acquire the reciprocal stereo images and a compatible PC interface. The invention is faster than other systems since it requires only two images for obtaining a dense depth model of objects with an arbitrary surface reflectance distribution allowing the system to be used in a wide range of applications such as metrology, quality control, medical and dynamic three dimensional modeling.Type: GrantFiled: July 30, 2010Date of Patent: February 21, 2012Assignee: Prefixa International Inc.Inventors: Miguel Arias-Estrada, Alicia Morales-Reyes, Maria Luisa Rosas-Cholula, Gerardo Sosa-Ramirez

Patent number: 8118114Abstract: A steering tool has a controller configured to provide closed-loop control of blade pressure and position. In one embodiment, the controller is configured to execute a directional control methodology in which the drilling direction is controlled via control of the blade position. The pressure in each blade is further controlled within a predetermined range of pressures. This embodiment tends to prevent excessive borehole friction while at the same time reducing undesirable rotation of the blade housing. In another embodiment, the controller is configured to correlate blade pressure measurements and blade position measurements during drilling. The correlation is utilized as part of a secondary directional control scheme in the event of a downhole failure of a blade position and/or pressure sensor.Type: GrantFiled: March 3, 2009Date of Patent: February 21, 2012Assignee: Smith International Inc.Inventor: Junichi Sugiura
