  • Patent number: 4544548
Abstract: Effective immunity against coccidiosis can be imparted to poultry if the birds are reared on a regular diet containing added viable sporulated coccidia oocysts at a level sufficient only to induce sub-clinical infection. Preferably the oocyst-containing diet is presented to the birds as soon as they are able to ingest solid food, and contains from 10 to 10,000 oocysts per kg of nutrient feed material. The simultaneous administration of an anti-coccidial drug at a curative level can help to control the immunity-producing infection. The oocyst-containing feedstuff of the invention can be prepared using solid free-flowing pre-mixes or aqueous concentrates, containing appropriate numbers of oocysts together with edible thickening agents. The oocysts can be protected against loss of viability through dehydration by being encapsulated. Growth of the immunized birds is sustained even when they are exposed to a severe oocyst challenge sufficient to induce serious infection in unimmunized birds.

  • Patent number: 4426401
Abstract: Perishable goods containing water, especially foodstuffs, are packed aseptically in packages formed from impervious but flexible film and furnished with vents adequate for the escape of vapor during treatment at bake or part-bake temperatures at which goods in the package are pasteurized, the vents remaining open throughout the heating and subsequent cooling thereafter to prevent the package collapsing on the goods. The vents are positioned for security of subsequent closure in a closure seam first made to enclose the goods in the package and are constituted by interruptions in the seam providing a total cross-sectional venting area of more than 2.5 mms.sup.2. The vents are sealed after cooling. The invention is particularly applicable to the packaging of bakers' goods which are baked or part-baked in the package, which is preferably made from laminated polymeric film material.

  • Patent number: 4404228
Abstract: A dry, free-flowing and non-caking material whose lecithin content can be varied over a wide range is prepared by combining an aqueous medium, a lipid phase containing at least 1 wt % lecithin, and a proteinaceous material, such as a soy concentrate, comprising a porous particulate substance which includes at least 30 wt % of a substantially water insoluble protein, and drying the resulting mixture. The free-flowing and non-caking nature of the particulate product is attributed to the porous and rigid structure of the proteinaceous material which permits the lipis phase to be contained in the interstitial spaces present in each particle.

  • Patent number: 4368690
Abstract: The invention relates to a process and a packaging container for the treatment of pupae by means of sterilizing radiation and for the controllable release of the hatched insects. The pupae are packed in the development compartment of the packaging container together with a filler and a coloring matter and are given radiation treatment in this compartment. When the insects hatch, they mark themselves with the coloring matter and move into the storage compartment of the container attracted by the light that shines through openings made for this purpose. This storage compartment is perforated to permit partial or complete opening in order to release the insects.
