    Abstract: To provide a protective coat on a refrigerated sample collector for a corrosive environment a unitary frame includes a support unit with condenser and evaporator coils mounted to the support unit and an orifice connecting the condenser and evaporator coils. The evaporator coils, condenser coils and a restrictor are powder coated after being connected, whereby an effective seal is provided for the restrictor, condenser coils and evaporator coils after they are assembled to the support. The unitary frame can be easily removed or connected as a unit to the sample collector. The bottle rack for the sample collector is made by injection molding two halves of the rack each of which has a matching surface and a bottle positioning surface. The matching surfaces are fastened together by placing the matching surfaces together back to back whereby locating members are spaced apart a sufficient distance.

    Abstract: A measuring instrument includes a transducer for measuring the depth of water or other value and a transducer for measuring a physical parameter that causes interference error. A calibration polynomial is used to correct the output signal for interference or nonlinearity. The calibration polynomial includes the signal generated by the transducers as independent variables and the output signal as the dependent variable. The calibration polynomial is formed by a correction polynomial having at least one primary measurement signal and at least a first interference related signal as independent variables and a calibrated signal as a dependent variable. To form the calibration polynomial, a preliminary calibration polynomial including the primary independent variable and at least one interference related independent variable is developed.

    Abstract: A bubbler is positioned within a solvent reservoir of a chromatographic system with its opening near the bottom of the system to measure the pressure of solvent. The bubbler may use air or may use helium or some other gas so that the solvent can be purged of excess air while its level is being monitored by the bubbler. The bubbler provides a depth signal to a microcontroller that records the drop in pressure and projects a low level of pressure at which point solvent should be replenished. The microprocessor may provide a signal to the operator or terminate operation or automatically replenish solvent depending upon the program.

    Abstract: Pumping requirements for chromatograph applications are for constant flow at high and variable pressures and for accurate programmable control of liquid composition. A two-cylinder pump, pumping system, and associated controls provide an accurate, fixed flow rate. A low pressure gradient former controls composition. During the initial portion of the pumping stroke of a first piston in which fluid is being compressed due to its finite bulk modulus of elasticity its check valve remains closed, a second piston provides all the flow required at a fixed rotational speed. Then, once the first piston has reached its bottom dead center, the control system switches to a constant-pressure control mode, thereby maintaining the flow rate at a fixed value. Constant-pressure control is again switched off either when the second piston's discharge check valve closes, or when the second piston's inlet check valve opens, and pump control returns to fixed rotational speed.

A closure is integrally molded with a port as well. One type of closure includes part of a snap-on fastener integrally molded to it to cooperate with corresponding parts molded integrally with the column walls and another type of closure is welded to the tubular walls. In the preferred embodiment the welding is spin welding. The end and closure have channels molded into them radiating from a port and opening toward packing material such as silica beads or porous polymeric plugs. Filters and secondary seals may be located at the ends to prevent leakage of packing material.

    Abstract: Permeable polymeric monolithic materials are prepared in a plastic column casing. In one embodiment, the permeable polymeric monolithic materials are polymerized by the application of heat from an external source starting at a low temperature such as 40 degrees centigrade, depending on the mixture and size of the column, and continuing at a higher temperature, such as 60 degrees centigrade. The temperature at the start of the polymerization is low enough so as not to cause exothermal run-away conditions and to avoid high heat of reaction that would prevent a substantially constant temperature across the cross-section of the column. The higher temperature is used after sufficient monomer depletion has occurred and steric interference has increased so the polymerization reaction is sufficiently slow to avoid heat of reaction generation high enough to cause significant reduction in the homogeneousness of the pore sizes.

The cap for the container includes a closure having a valve opening extending upwardly and sized to narrowly receive the syringe needle in a perpendicular valve member opening. The valve member includes a flat member on one end adapted to be gripped by a cam follower for opening and closing of the valve opening in coordination with the movement of the syringe needle.

In one embodiment, the permeable polymeric monolithic materials are polymerized while pressure is applied through a piston having a smooth piston head in contact with the polymerization mixture. The pressure eliminates wall effect and changes the structure in the column. Similarly, some columns that have a tendency to swell in the presence of aqueous solutions and pressurized while the solution is applied to prevent swelling and wall effect. This procedure also changes the structure in the column. The size of the separation effective openings can be controlled by the amount of the pressure and pores eliminated.
