  • Patent number: 7918159
Abstract: The invention concerns a calender which comprises a vertical stack of interlinked rollers driven individually by regulated electric motors. The regulation process acts on the distribution of the delivered power to the individual rollers such that the forces acting on the rollers in the horizontal direction and measured in the roller bearings are minimized, so enabling slimmer rollers to be used.

  • Patent number: 5855337
Abstract: In a winding machine, the space defined by the support cylinders and the winding rolls is sealed and an overpressure is created in this space to relieve the force with which the winding rolls press against the support cylinders. For the purpose, in the area of the two lateral ends of the support cylinders sealing elements are arranged, which for adjustment to various web widths, are axially displaceable and at the same time can be moved away to an area outside the motion range of guide heads and their mounting. In the sealing position of the sealing elements, a fictional-look connection with the support cylinders is avoided.

  • Patent number: 5632814
Abstract: For the application of a coating material onto a running material web, particularly a paper or cardboard web, a cylinder guides the web of material while a dosing element extends over the work width and has a surface which together with the cylinder forms an application gap converging in the travel direction of the web. In order to be able to apply various coating materials at high web speeds evenly and without disturbances, even at low application weights, the dosing element is supported swingably about an axis parallel to the cylinder, the radius of its surface guiding the coating material increases continuously in the travel direction of the web up to the dosing line and the surface ends at the dosing line with an edge whose radius is less than 8 mm.

  • Patent number: 5518199
Abstract: An elongated support roller centered on and rotatable about a horizontal axis radially engages at least one row of takeup rolls coaxial to a takeup-roll axis parallel to the support-roller axis and including at least one central roll and a pair of end rolls axially flanking the central roll. A relatively wide paper web fed to the support roller passes through a slitter between the web supply and the support roller for slitting the web into a plurality of strips including at least one central strip and a pair of end strips flanking the end strip. The central and end strips pass at least partially around the support roller and are wound on the respective central and end rolls. The support roller is rotated about its axis so that the strips wind at least partially around the support roller and at least the central roll is rotated by engagement with the support roll. Respective end-roll periphery drives radially engage the end rolls for rotating same at a greater peripheral speed than the support roller.

  • Patent number: 5478026
Abstract: For winding webs of material on cores winding machines have two support rollers on which the winding rolls are supported during winding. The web is guided from underneath through the gap between the support cylinders. When the winding rolls are exchanged, for the cutting of the web a cutting knife with a tear-off blade is raised through the gap between the support cylinders up to the cylinder bed. In order to reduce the bearing load of the winding rolls on the support cylinders in the lower wedge between the two support cylinders an air box extending over the work width and having a compressed air supply line is provided, which seals the gap between the support cylinders and has an air exit slot open towards this gap. The tear-off blade of the cutting knife is attached to a support arranged in the air box and can be moved up and down through the air exit slot into the cutting position in the cylinder bed and completely lowered into the air box.

  • Patent number: 5460119
Abstract: In a device for coating a web of material, particularly a paper or cardboard web, the swivel mechanism of the coating mechanism and/or of the dosing system each have in addition to the cylinder units effecting the swinging motion from the servicing position into the working position, a hydraulic piston-cylinder unit pressing the swivel arms from the working position into an intermediate position. In this way the coating mechanism and/or the dosing system can be swung every quickly into the working position at the counter-roller and also swung away very quickly from the latter.

  • Patent number: 5413656
Abstract: A method of winding a continuous web on a succession of cores comprises the steps of sequentially rotating a core to which the web is attached to longitudinally advance the web and wind it on the core while applying a strip of adhesive to a transfer roller and then stopping rotation of the core. Subsequently a crosswise row of perforations is formed in the web offset from the core and then the web is longitudinally advanced while pressing the roller against the web to transfer the adhesive strip to the web at and immediately upstream and downstream from the perforation row. The web is subsequently differentially. longitudinally advanced web upstream and downstream of the perforation row to tear the web longitudinally apart at the perforation row, thereby forming a trailing web end attached to the web wound on the core and a leading web end each carrying some of the adhesive strip.

  • Patent number: 5405099
Abstract: An apparatus for subdividing a flexible web into at least two strips and winding same up into individual rolls has a supply roll on which the flexible web is wound, at least one takeup roll on which the web is also wound, and a drive for rotating the takeup roll and thereby pulling the web from the supply roll. The supply roll is braked to tension the web. Between the supply and takeup rolls the web is longitudinally slit into at least two individual strips. A pair of pinch rolls between the slitting means and the takeup roll engage the individual strips without slip a drive or brake rotates the pinch rollers at a speed such that the tension in the web upstream of the pinch rollers is substantially greater than the tension downstream of the pinch rollers.

  • Patent number: 5382217
Abstract: A box tube blank having first, second, third, and fourth panels joined together at first, second, third, and forth creases is broken in starting with the blank oriented in a starting plane with the first and third creases superposed and the second and fourth creases outermost. First the second and fourth creases are pressed toward each other parallel to the starting plane to spread the first and third creases away from each other until the second and fourth creases are juxtaposed and the first and third creases lie outermost and the blank lies generally perpendicular to the starting plane. Then the tube blank passes between an upstream pair of parallel rollers extending perpendicular to the starting plane to compress it parallel to the starting plane.
