  • Patent number: 5436057
Abstract: This invention relates to the discovery that the perceived softness of embossed tissue can be increased greatly while avoiding prior art nesting problems if a particular pattern is embossed into the tissue. This pattern combines relatively shallow stitchlike debossments with deeper more sharply defined signature debossments. The stitchlike debossments are rounded and arranged in wavy flowing intersecting lines. The signature debossments are arranged in regions framed by the intersecting wavy flowing lines.

  • Patent number: 5424517
Abstract: A food package including a package body forming a food receiving cavity for storing and heating a food item in a microwave oven. Specifically, the package body includes a bottom panel and a top panel with side panels joining the bottom and top panel. An impedance matching element is provided on at least one of the panels for impedance matching microwave energy entering the package. The impedance matching element is preferably a contiguous film of thinly flaked material embedded in a dielectric binder which is sized and shaped with respect to the food to cause impedance matching to elevate the temperature of the food in predetermined areas dependent upon the size and spacing of the film without interacting with the microwave energy to produce heat. The film may also be shaped in the form of a convex lens to direct impedance matched microwave energy toward the food to elevate the temperature of the food in a predetermined area.

  • Patent number: 5410135
Abstract: A self-limiting dispersion of a conductive material in a binder is disclosed wherein the conductive material consists essentially of a carbon material having a structure selected to undergo percolation when dispersed in the binder at a concentration of from about 10 weight percent to about 45 weight percent. The binder comprises a thermoplastic material selected to go through a first order phase transition or a second order transition at a temperature from about 300.degree. F. to about 480.degree. F. and the dispersion is formulated near the conductance percolation threshold so that its electrical conductivity drops precipitously (e.g., at least about 1.5 orders of magnitude) above the binder transition temperature. The dispersion of the conductive material in the binder is especially suitable for use as a self-limiting microwave heater material which is either a molding composition, or surface coating composition, and especially a composition that can be applied to a substrate by printing.

  • Patent number: 5402932
Abstract: A receptacle includes pairs of opposed side panels which are connected by connector flaps. The connector flaps have two relatively movable flap portions and the flap portions cooperate with tabs formed in the side panels to lock the receptacle into assembled condition and prevent up and down movement of the connector flaps relative to the rest of the receptacle structure.

  • Patent number: 5402673
Abstract: An apparatus and method for measuring the firmness of a paper roll product. The roll product is mounted on a spindle and a plunger is lowered into engagement with the outer peripheral surface of the roll product. A motion detector detects the distance the plunger moves into the roll product under the weight of the plunger and data based on this distance is displayed for viewing by the operator. Calibrating gauges are employed prior to measurement to ensure that a zero reading on the display corresponds to the point at which the plunger initially contacts the roll product outer surface.

  • Patent number: 5387284
Abstract: An apparatus and a method for forming coreless paper roll products are disclosed. Coreless paper roll products are formed by slitting a paper web to form web segments having side edges. The web segments are then wound about an elongated winder shaft. During winding of the paper web, liquid is applied to the web segments only at the side edges thereof while maintaining the web segments free of liquid between the side edges. When the rolls are formed and stripped from the winder shaft, the openings located at the ends of the roll at the roll central aperture will be well defined and allow ready insertion of a dispenser spindle. All the material of the roll can then be dispensed.

  • Patent number: 5385226
Abstract: Apparatus for conveying and forming a single row of articles into a plurality of rows of articles includes a starwheel receiving articles from an infeed conveyor and which is rotated by the articles. A diverter is rotated through a connection with the starwheel and receives articles from the starwheel. The diverter moves two out of three of the received articles to intermediate conveyors disposed on opposed sides of the diverter. These diverted rolls form two rows on an outfeed conveyor along with a third row of articles which were not diverted.
