  • Patent number: 5175663
Abstract: The present invention comprises a fuel pump controller having a silicon controlled rectifier (SCR) for supplying a power source voltage to a fuel pump circuit for driving a fuel pump when the SCR is turned on. A timer circuit is also provided for instantly turning on the SCR for a predetermined time period when an ignition switch is initially turned on so as to provide a discharge of fuel into the carburetor before the engine is activated or rotated. In addition, a controller is provided for repeatedly turning on the SCR each time the engine is rotated such that the fuel pump will be driven by rotation of the engine until such engine rotation ceases. By operation of this assembly, fuel is supplied to the carburetor for a predetermined time period before the engine begins to rotate so as to obtain an efficient and quick engine ignition despite the possible initial lack of fuel in the carburetor.

  • Patent number: 5170628
Abstract: A brake booster such as of a tandem type having a center plate disposed within a shell is disclosed. A valve body has a stepped end face, from which a cylindrical portion extends rearwardly. The cylindrical portion extends through a rear power piston and a rear diaphragm while maintaining a hermetic seal therebetween, with a distal end of the cylindrical portion being disposed within a variable pressure chamber of a rear chamber. The internal space of the cylindrical portion defines the rear end of a variable pressure passage. This arrangement allows the rear end of the variable pressure passage (the cylindrical portion) to be disposed in radially overlapping relationship with the rear power piston, thereby allowing the external diameter of the valve body to be reduced. In this manner, the effective area of the front power piston connected to the valve body may be increased as compared with the prior art.

  • Patent number: 5168949
Abstract: A subpump has its discharge flow rate increased in response to an increase in a vehicle speed. A variable throttle is disposed in a discharge passage from the subpump, and an oil pressure taken from the upstream side of the variable throttle is introduced into a hydraulic reaction chamber to produce a steering action. A main pump has its flow rate increased or decreased in accordance with a number of revolutions thereof, and feeds a pressure oil to a power steering control valve through a passage in which a fixed restriction is disposed. An oil pressure which prevails upstream of the fixed restriction acts upon the variable throttle to change its area of opening, thereby controlling the steering force.

  • Patent number: 5165495
Abstract: An improvement to an electrically driven power steering apparatus which utilizes an electric motor is disclosed. A bevel gear of a greater diameter is mounted on a steering shaft so as to be axially displaceable thereon, and an urging mechanism is connected between the bevel gear and the steering shaft. The urging mechanism renders the bevel gear to be incapable of rotation relative to the steering shaft, and also urges the teeth thereof toward the teeth of a bevel gear of a reduced diameter which is coupled to the electric motor. This prevents a backlash from occurring between the both bevel gears, thus preventing the occurrence of sounds of percussion as the both gears abut against each other.

  • Patent number: 5163355
Abstract: According to the present invention, a rotation preventive portion for preventing the rotation of bead portion, such as a stepped projection, is provided on the bead portion of diaphragm, which is squeezed between a front shell and a rear shell. When the front shell and the rear shell are assembled with such a diaphragm, the rotation of the bead portion is prevented by this rotation preventive portion (stepped bead). As the result, outer lip of the bead portion of diaphragm or the rolling portion of diaphragm are not squeezed between the front shell and the rear shell, and the front shell and the rear shell can be assembled without damaging or breaking the diaphragm.

  • Patent number: 5158149
Abstract: A steering force control apparatus for a power steering system includes a valve. The valve includes a valve hole, a spool, and a spring. A main pump oil supply path branched from a main hydraulic path extending from a pump to a power cylinder, a reaction path connected to a hydraulic reaction chamber, and a discharge path connected to a tank are open to the valve hole to be spaced apart from each other by predetermined distances along an axis of the valve. The spool is slidably arranged in the valve hole and has land portions so as to change connecting states of the main pump oil supply path, the reaction path, and the discharge path. The spring always biases the spool in one direction. A subpump oil supply path for supplying a fluid from a subpump whose delivery pressure is changed is connected to an end of the spool which is biased by the spring, thereby controlling an operation of the spool by the subpump in correspondence with a vehicle speed.

  • Patent number: 5154593
Abstract: A device for improving the starting response of a vane pump and for reducing the power loss during a high speed operation of the pump. The vane pump includes a rotor formed with slits, in which slits vanes are slidably disposed. To drive the respective vanes into abutment against a cam ring, a pair of plates which hold the rotor and the cam ring sandwiched therebetween are formed with a plurality of arcuate grooves, into which a discharged oil is introduced. Rather than providing a narrow groove formed in the same plate as that in which the arcuate grooves are formed to provide a communication therebetween, an annular groove is formed in the lateral surface of the rotor to replace the narrow groove or in addition to the narrow groove, and is constructed so that the narrow groove is interrupted by the vanes as the vanes retract, the annular groove providing a communication between the arcuate grooves when a respective vane is driven radially outwardly.

  • Patent number: 5152359
Abstract: A reaction pressure control mechanism of power steering apparatus includes a power cylinder, to which a pressure oil discharged from an oil pump is supplied through a control valve, and oil discharged from the oil pump is branched to be introduced into a hydraulic reaction chamber, which produces steering reaction. A pair of variable restrictions are formed in a supply and discharge passage to and from the hydraulic reaction chamber, and a single spool which is operated by a solenoid is effective to increase the opening of one of the variable restrictions while reducing the opening of the other restriction. A plunger is disposed in opposing relationship with a rod associated with the solenoid and on which the spool is fixedly mounted so that when the oil pressure in the reaction chamber exceeds a given value, such oil pressure is introduced to the backside of the plunger to cause the spool to be driven back, thus reducing the opening of the variable restriction associated with the supply passage.
