  • Patent number: 7149223
Abstract: Enhanced Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS) functionality, including programmable digital domain modulators and demodulators for dynamic channel assignment, is incorporated into Fiber Nodes (FNs) or mini Fiber Nodes (mFNs), yielding enhanced Fiber Nodes (eFNs). These eFns distribute CMTS functionality deep into Hybrid-Fiber-Coax Networks (HFCN) rather than centralizing the CMTS functions within a single location. Moving the cable modem terminations closer to the subscribers shortens the analog RF paths required to support cable modems. Communication of both subscriber data and CMTS control data is performed over Ethernet-compatible packet networks between the field-based CMTSs and an upstream facility (e.g., the Head End), which includes an Internet gateway. Packet data for multiple subscriber cable modems is easily compressed and merged over common network paths, reducing cabling plant complexity and increasing bandwidth utilization.

  • Publication number: 20060268889
Abstract: The present invention is directed to obtain a statistic multiplexing effect in an image transmission system using terminals stipulated by H. 310 of an ITU-T recommendation. In a network including a first local area ATM network, a second local area ATM network and a public ATM network connected to the first and second ATM local area networks, multiplex gateway devices are interposed between the local area ATM networks and the public ATM network, respectively. The multiplex gateway apparatus includes ATM transmission line units 21 to 23 for calculating statistic information represented by a mean rate and a peak cell rate of ATM cells in the transmission ATM signal. A statistic multiplexing control unit 24 conducts rate addition after statistic multiplexing according to the statistic information and determines the rate addition result.

  • Publication number: 20060268932
Abstract: A network system includes a first device and a second device separated by a network having asymmetric routes in which traffic forwarded in a first direction from the first device to the second device may travel a different route than traffic forwarded in a second direction from the second device to the first device. At least three intermediate processing devices are located between the first device and the second device, wherein at least two of the intermediate processing devices are located along different asymmetric routes. The intermediate processing devices intercept a communication flow between the first device and the second device, and encapsulate the communication flow within network tunnels so that communications associated with the communication flow in the first direction and the second direction are forwarded between a same set of at least two of the intermediate processing devices.

  • Patent number: 7139282
Abstract: A bandwidth divider and method for allocating bandwidth between a plurality of packet processors. The bandwidth divider includes a plurality of counters for measuring the bandwidth of data packets transferred from the bandwidth divider to a respective packet processor; and a controller for analyzing the plurality of counters and transferring a data packet to a selected packet processor based on the contents of the counters. The method monitors the bandwidth consumed by the packet processors; determines, based on the bandwidth consumed by the packet processors, which packet processor has consumed the least amount of bandwidth; and allocates a next data packet to the packet processor which has consumed the least amount of bandwidth.

  • Publication number: 20060250758
Abstract: A Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS) is partitioned into Line Cards, I/O Cards, and a midplane to provide enhanced Reliability, Availability, and Serviceability. Each I/O Card provides a cabling interface for coupling an assigned Line Card to other portions of a Hybrid-Fiber-Coax Network. A plurality of RF signals is coupled via connectors between each Line Card and a corresponding I/O Card, via the midplane. This permits a Line Card to be removed for servicing without requiring recabling of the corresponding I/O Card. Preferably, a rectangular-multi-pin collinear connector-cascade (Line Card jack, midplane double-plug, and I/O Card jack) is used to couple the plurality of RF signals. The connector-cascade is configured with protective RF ground pins adjacent and surrounding each of a plurality of RF signal pins.

  • Publication number: 20060239274
Abstract: In a method for terminating a plurality of ATM lines for a base station modulator/demodulator in a mobile communication system for data communication between upper stations and a base station by a transmission method wherein ATM cells are mapped utilizing an existing leased line as a physical medium sublayer, when an increase in capacity of the base station necessitates leased line interfaces corresponding to a plurality of upper stations, processing is carried out in such a manner that leased line numbers are added to respective HEC regions of ATM cells sent from each upper station into a leased line interface section, whereby the addition of the function of the leased line interface section involved in an increase in the leased line can be minimized and the additional function can be simply designed utilizing a conventional technique.

  • Publication number: 20060233102
Abstract: A cell disposal avoidance system is provided that can avoid disposal of cells resided in the QoS buffer when a traffic of a specific QoS class in an ATM switch increases. The ATM switch includes a storage cell number monitor, a software data section 813, and a software controller 812. The storage cell number monitor monitors congestion of plural QoS buffers in the buffer 3, 5. The software data section 813 stores a cell reading priority (WRR value) attached for each QoS buffer. The software controller 812 dynamically changer; the WRR value when congestion of a QoS buffer is in a congestion state (at generation of cell disposal or buffer congestion alarm) and increases the WRR value of the QoS buffer in a cell disposal state. Cells are divided in a time division mode according to the weight of the WRR value and read in a round format from the QoS buffer. The ATM switch resets the WRR value to an initial value when the congestion of the QoS buffer ceases.

  • Patent number: 7123585
Abstract: Each sink port in a cross-bar switch provides for allocating bandwidth among data packets. Packets are assigned priority levels, and the cross-bar switch regulates bandwidth allocation for each priority level. A sink port records traffic volume for packet data of each priority level. The sink port calculates a weighted average bandwidth for each different priority level and determines whether to reject packet data for the priority level. When the packet data collected by a sink port exceeds a threshold, the sink port rejects data packets with priority levels having excessive weighted average bandwidths.

  • Patent number: 7120113
Abstract: A method for processing high priority packets and low priority packets in a network device includes performing arbitration on high priority packets until no high priority packets remain. Arbitration then is enabled on low priority packets. A packet size associated with the selected low priority packet is compared with a programmable threshold. Low priority packets are excluded from subsequent arbitration for a programmable duration when the packet size exceeds the programmable threshold.

  • Patent number: 7120114
Abstract: A call admission control technique allowing flexible and reliable call admissions at an ATM switch in the case of an ATM network including both QoS-specified and QoS-unspecified virtual connections is disclosed. In the case where a QoS (Quality of Service) specified connection request occurs, an estimated bandwidth is calculated which is to be assigned to an existing QoS-unspecified traffic on the link associated with the QoS-specified connection request. A call control processor of the ATM switch determines whether the QoS-specified connection request is accepted, depending on whether a requested bandwidth is smaller than an available bandwidth that is obtained by subtracting an assigned bandwidth and the estimated bandwidth from a full bandwidth of the link.
