Abstract: Sizing solution delivery systems for a sizing press and methods for reducing sizing solution volumes generally include a service tank containing an untreated sizing solution (e.g., starch), a standpipe having a volume capacity of less than the service tank, and an auxiliary chemical tank downstream from the service tank and the standpipe. The standpipe is configured to collect overflow fluid from the size press during use. In this configuration, the volumes of overflow solution provided in the loop are shortened, which reduces sizing solution volumes needed during purging for paper grade changes. In addition, time and equilibrium cycles are concomitantly reduced. Also disclosed are methods for reducing the sizing solution volumes and/or increasing sizing efficiency with the sizing solution delivery systems.
Abstract: A process for whitening paper in a size press includes contacting a cellulose sheet with a size press liquor that contains a surface size and a particular whitener containing sulfonate groups and cations, M, wherein at least 10% of all cations M have the formula in which R5 to R7, independently of one another, denote hydrogen, a C1-C4-alkyl radical or an optionally further substituted C2-C4-hydroxyalkyl radical, and R8 denotes an optionally further substituted C2-C4-hydroxyalkyl radical. The process provides superior paper whitening compared to a corresponding process in which the whitener cations are all sodium or potassium ions.
Abstract: The invention relates to a catalytic process for reducing nitrogen oxides in flue gases, in which process a reducing agent containing composition is mixed with flue gas and the mixture achieved is brought into contact with a catalyst. In accordance with the invention, the composition contains e.g. 1 to 60% of weight of ammonium formate. Especially a low freezing point can be achieved with such water containing composition. In addition, a good reduction conversion is achieved even at low temperatures.
