  • Patent number: 7953423
Abstract: Techniques for performing messaging between mobile stations (MSs) and UMA network controllers (UNCs) in an unlicensed mobile access network (UMAN). URR (UMA radio resource) messages are exchanged between an MS and one or more UNCs to perform various operations associated with UMAN. The MS may access the UMAN via a wireless access point (AP) that is communicatively coupled to the UNC via an IP network. The URR messages are sent between MSs and UNCs using an Up interface comprising a set of layered protocols over an underlying IP transport.

  • Patent number: 7933598
Abstract: Embodiments of the invention provide methods and apparatuses for effecting handover between the licensed and unlicensed portions of an integrated wireless network. For one embodiment, prior to hand out of a communication from the unlicensed wireless system (UWS), a cell identifier associated with a user terminal is changed from the cell identifier corresponding to the internet access point to the cell identifier corresponding to the unlicensed network controller. This allows the destination MSC of the licensed wireless system (LWS) to accept and fulfill a handover request from the UWS. In accordance with an alternative embodiment of the invention, after a hand in of a communication to the UWS, a cell identifier associated with the user terminal is changed from the cell identifier corresponding to the UNC to the cell identifier corresponding to the internet access point. This change allows providing location-based services to the UT being serviced by the UWS.

  • Patent number: 7912004
Abstract: Some embodiments provide a method of activating a packet transport channel (PTC) in a communication system that includes a first licensed wireless communication system and a second generic access network (GAN) that has a generic access network controller (GANC). The GANC is communicatively coupled to the first communication system through a universal mobile telecommunication system (UMTS) terrestrial radio access network (UTRAN) Iu interface. The method sends a GA-PSR activate PTC request message from the GANC to a user equipment (UE). The message comprises a terminal endpoint identifier (TEID) that the GANC assigns to the UE. The message also receives a GA-PSR activate PTC acknowledge message from the UE at the GANC.

  • Patent number: 7890099
Abstract: A method of integrating a licensed wireless system and an unlicensed wireless system includes establishing a communication session through a landline. The communication session is linked to a subscriber device through an unlicensed wireless system servicing an unlicensed wireless system service area. An indication is received that the subscriber device is moving from the unlicensed wireless system service area into a licensed wireless system service area. Without disrupting the communication session, the communication session is automatically transitioned from the unlicensed wireless system to a licensed wireless system servicing the licensed wireless system service area. Similarly, a call initiated on the licensed wireless system is automatically transitioned to the unlicensed wireless system when the subscriber device enters the unlicensed wireless system service area.

  • Patent number: 7843900
Abstract: Mechanisms to extend UMA (Unlicensed Mobile Access) or GAN (General Access Network) to inter-work with a UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) core network. A UMA network controller (UNC) is provided to interface between a UMA network and a UMTS core network using the standard Iu-CS and Iu-PS interfaces. From the viewpoint of the UMTS core network, the UNC appears as another Radio Network Controller (RNC). Protocol layer schemes are disclosed for mobile stations, UNCs, SGSNs and MSCs to support signaling and data messaging in both the packet-switched and connection-switched domains. The mobile stations provide dual-mode operation, such that they are able to access the UMTS core network via unlicensed service when in a UMA access area, and to access the UMTS core network via licensed service when outside of a UMA access area and in a UTRAN service area.
