  • Patent number: 5087372
Abstract: A method for simultaneously removing a plurality of different heavy metal ions from contaminated water is disclosed. A plurality of different heavy metal ions can be simultaneously, efficiently removed by filtering contaminated water through a porous membrane comprising a membranous, porous resin matrix and a plurality of side chains chemically bound to both surfaces and pore wall surfaces of the matrix, which side chains each have a chelate group, preferably an iminodiacetic acid group, and terminating the filtration when the concentration of a determinant heavy metal ion in the filtrate reaches a predetermined level. By the method of the present invention, a plurality of different heavy metal ions, such as a cobalt ion and a nickel ion, can be simultaneously, efficiently removed from contaminated water, such as water to be used for and waste water from a nuclear power generator, on a commercial scale.

  • Patent number: 5087067
Abstract: An inflatable bag assembly is suitable for a seat of a vehicle such as an assistant driver's seat and has a bag which is inflatable in a curved configuration offset to one side. The bag is accommodated in a retainer case in a folded position. A gas generator has a gas outlet which is offset to one side with respect to the bag. Alternatively, the bag itself may be distributed less to one side of the retainer case than to the other side. Such a configuration of the gas generator or the bag allows the bag to begin inflating at the particular side mentioned above.

  • Patent number: 5088050
Abstract: An apparatus for preparing output data representative of an output image consisting of output image segments each defined by output picture elements such that each output image segments corresponds to each input picture element. The apparatus includes a pattern data memory for storing at least one set of basic output-image unit pattern data each representative of a basic pattern of position of output picture elements defining a basic output image area, and a device for preparing the output data for each output image segment whose pattern of positions of output picture elements is identical with the basic pattern represented by any set of basic output-image unit pattern data stored in the memory. The output data are prepared based on the appropriate set of unit pattern data, without determining the positions of the output picture elements lying within the outline of that output image segment obtained from the corresponding input picture element.

  • Patent number: 5087142
Abstract: A sheet feeder for a printer selectively feeds a continuous sheet and a cut sheet to a printing mechanism including a platen and a print head. The continuous sheet is fed by a pair of pin tractors and the platen while the cut sheet is fed only by the platen. At least one sheet presser roller is provided for guiding the feeding of the cut sheet, which moves toward the platen when the cut sheet is fed so as to hold the latter against the platen, and moves away from the platen when the continuous sheet is fed. A switching lever sets the sheet feed mode, which when moved to a first position causes to feed the cut sheet by rotating the platen and when moved to a second position causes to feed the continuous sheet by rotating both the pin tractors and the platen.

  • Patent number: 5086719
Abstract: A sewing machine comprising a threading device and a needle-bar raising means. A threading switch is operated and a sewing machine motor is stopped. Subsequently, thread is passed onto a linkage, a needle bar is disconnected from an arm shaft, and the needle bar is raised to a given position. After the needle bar is set in its uppermost position, thread stretched out from the linkage 38 to the front of an eye in a needle is passed through the eye in the needle. If the end of thread is manually held in front of the eye in the needle to stretch out prior to threading operation, the needle bar does not lower, thus enhancing operational safety and preventing thread from loosening.

  • Patent number: 5088043
Abstract: An engine controlling system for a vehicle suitable for use with an automobile. When a running condition change-over means develops a constant speed running designating signal, an aimd torque calculating means calculates an aimed output torque of an engine of the vehicle in accordance with an aimed speed, but when the running condition change-over means develops an accelerated running designating signal, the aimed torque calculating means calculates an aimed output torque of the engine in accordance with an aimed acceleration. Meanwhile, an engine output torque detecting means calculates an output torque of a torque converter in accordance with characteristics of the torque converter and an engine rotational speed detection signal detected by an engine rotational speed detecting means and outputs the output torque as a measured value of the output power of the engine.
