Patent number: 7393451Abstract: A compressible boot seal for sealing the side of a vertical traveling water screen with flights. The boot seal is formed by a U-shaped, bent nylon plate having a bottom base that resides in the boot section at the lower end of the traveling water screen and two upwardly extending arms that are attached at their distal ends to a side of the water screen support. The plate is bent at the intersection of the base and the arms to form a living hinge that allows the plate to deflect toward the side of the support on contact with side edges of the flights. The hinge seals the plate against the side edges of the flights. A resilient filler material fills the void between the plate and the side of the support to prevent sand and debris from interfering with the deflection of the side seal.Type: GrantFiled: October 9, 2006Date of Patent: July 1, 2008Assignee: Laitram, L.L.C.Inventors: Philip J. Publication number: 20080121498Abstract: An accumulation-and-release conveyor using a roller belt with rollers arranged to rotate in the direction of belt travel. The rollers extend through the thickness of the belt to support conveyed articles. The belt continuously advances along a conveyor carryway from an upstream end to a downstream end. A movable stop divides the carryway into an upstream article-accumulation zone and a downstream article-acceleration zone. In the accumulation zone, the rollers are freely rotatable; in the acceleration zone, the rollers roll on a bearing surface underlying the belt. The stop is selectively moved between a blocking position preventing articles from passing and accumulating them with low back line pressure on the freely rotatable rollers in the upstream accumulation zone and a release position allowing articles to pass to the accumulation zone where they are propelled forward and separated from each other by the rotation of the rollers rolling on the bearing surface.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 29, 2006Publication date: May 29, 2008Applicant: LAITRAM, L.L.C.Inventors: Mark Costanzo, Joseph M. Patent number: 7357246Abstract: A conveyor having rollers supported above the conveying surface of a belt to prevent conveyed articles from being stranded atop flights or other positioning elements. The rollers may be passive or driven actively either directly by rolling contact with a carryway or indirectly through a transmission linked to accelerating rollers in direct contact with a supporting carryway. Accelerating rollers extend through the belt past the conveying surface to support conveyed articles and past an opposite surface of the belt into rolling contact with the carryway. The accelerating rollers may be axle-mounted, in-line or oblique, or freely rotatable roller balls. As the belt advances, the accelerating rollers propel conveyed articles forward over any supported roller the article is leaning on into a registration position against a flight, frictional area, or other registration element.Type: GrantFiled: September 20, 2006Date of Patent: April 15, 2008Assignee: Laitram, L.L.C.Inventor: Mark Costanzo

Publication number: 20080067040Abstract: A modular plastic conveyor belt formed by rows of belt modules connected together at hinge joints by non-circular hinge rods. Each hinge rod has an arcuate outer face that forms a portion of a cylinder and extends circumferentially over a first angle preferably between 90° and 180°. An axial groove is formed in the hinge rod opposite its arcuate outer face. Openings in hinge eyes at opposite ends of the belt rows are sector-shaped. The openings along a leading edge of a row are shaped to receive a hinge rod snugly with little clearance. The openings along a trailing edge of an adjacent row have similar radial dimensions, but extend circumferentially over a second angle greater than the first angle. The hinge eyes of adjacent rows are interleaved and aligned to receive a hinge rod and give the hinge joint a range of articulation.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 30, 2006Publication date: March 20, 2008Applicant: LAITRAM, L.L.C.Inventor: James O. Patent number: 7344018Abstract: A conveyor and associated method for diverting closely spaced articles conveyed along the conveyor. The conveyor includes a conveyor belt with belt rollers oriented to rotate on axes oblique to the direction of belt travel. A series of arrays of bearing surface elements are arranged end to end along the length of the conveyor. The bearing surfaces may be static or rotational. Each array defines a roller-control zone in which the array is selectively activated with its bearing surface elements in contract with the belt rollers or deactivated with its bearing surface elements out of contact with the belt rollers. As the belt advances through an activated roller-control zone, the belt rollers rotate to propel a conveyed article toward a side of the belt. The contiguous roller-control zones are sequentially activated and deactivated to direct articles to the side and off the belt or to let them pass straight through.Type: GrantFiled: June 1, 2005Date of Patent: March 18, 2008Assignee: Laitram, L.L.C.Inventors: Mark Costanzo, Eric M. Publication number: 20080053796Abstract: An elevating belt conveyor and a method for conveying articles up steep inclines. The conveyor has a series of support elements extending outward from the article-conveying surface of a conveyor belt advancing upward along a steep incline. The support elements prevent conveyed articles from sliding down the conveyor belt on the incline. A closely positioned hugger belt facing the article-conveying surface of the conveyor belt advances in the same direction to provide a low-friction retention surface to articles leaning away for the conveyor belt on the incline. In another variation, the support elements may be positioned on the hugger belt rather than on the main conveyor belt, with the main conveyor belt restraining articles against falling from the conveyor on an incline. Alternatively, a vertical array of rollers replaces the hugger belt as a low-friction retaining surface.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 23, 2006Publication date: March 6, 2008Applicant: LAITRAM, L.L.C.Inventors: Joseph M. Publication number: 20070284220Abstract: A conveyor using a roller belt with rollers arranged to rotate on oblique axes to urge articles toward a side guide. The conveyor includes an oblique-roller belt supported on a carryway for running in a direction of belt travel. Rollers extend above an outer conveying surface of the belt without contact with the carryway. Each roller rotates on an axis oblique to the direction of belt travel and intersects the side guide downstream of the roller's position. A retractable stop is movable to and from a blocking position along the carryway. In the blocking position, the stop blocks the conveyed articles from advancing in the direction of belt travel. The rollers underlying the blocked articles rotate as the belt runs by contact with the articles. The rotating rollers provide a component of force to the blocked articles directed toward the side guide to push the articles against the side guide or other articles as they accumulate under low pressure upstream of the stop.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 21, 2007Publication date: December 13, 2007Applicant: LAITRAM, L.L.C.Inventors: David Riddick, Brett Lally, Mark Costanzo

Patent number: 7300572Abstract: A traveling water screen comprising an endless foraminous belt with flights. The foraminous belt forms a water screen extending from a lower end in a flowing stream to an upper end above the surface of the stream. The stream flows through openings in the foraminous screen. The flights, which may be scoops, are arranged in spaced apart relation on the outer surface of the water screen. The water screen is driven in a direction so that its upstream portion advances upward and its downstream portion downward. The flights form inclined surfaces across the width of the screen from a point of highest elevation to one or more points of lowest elevation at one or both side edges of the screen. As the screen moves, the flights lift fish toward the surface. As a flight breaks the surface, fish slide down the inclined flights toward one or both side edges of the screen to be diverted safely.Type: GrantFiled: May 23, 2006Date of Patent: November 27, 2007Assignee: Laitram, L.L.C.Inventors: Joseph M. Patent number: 7284653Abstract: Apparatus and methods using conveyor belts with activated diverting rollers to maintain the leading edge of a conveyed article while changing the direction of conveyance. A first conveyor belt advancing in a first direction abuts a second conveyor belt advancing in a second direction transverse to the first direction. Both conveyor belts have diverting rollers that rotate on axes oblique to the direction of conveyance. The diverting rollers of each are activated by rolling on an underlying bearing surface to rotate in the vicinity of the junction of the two conveyor belts. The diverting rollers in the first conveyor belt direct the article toward the second conveyor belt. The rollers in the second conveyor belt direct the article toward a side of the second conveyor belt. An article lying on both belts simultaneously rotates by the combined action of the two sets of diverting rollers acting on opposite ends of the article.Type: GrantFiled: March 23, 2006Date of Patent: October 23, 2007Assignee: Laitram, L.L.C.Inventors: Matthew L.
