Abstract: When a mutation, designated rad51.sup.M1, was generated in the mouse MmRAD51 gene, mutant embryos died shortly after implantation. rad51.sup.M1 cells exhibited hypersensitivity to ionizing radiation, reduced proliferation, programmed cell death and chromosome loss. The disruption of MmRad51 rotein-protein interactions stopped cell proliferation and/or reduced cell viability. Several proteins that interact with MmRad51 have been identified including, for example Brca2 and M96. Additionally, Rad51 self-associates via the N-terminal region. When a single residue was changed from a conserved lysine to an alanine, the alteration proved toxic to cells. Moreover, a rad51 allele that lacked the RecA homology region was also deleterious to cells. In view of the above, it is clear that inhibiting MmRad51 function or the function of any molecule that associates with MmRad51, or any molecule in the Rad51 or Rad52 pathways, hinders cell proliferation and/or viability.

Abstract: A process for evaluating spatial impression of an enclosed space includes the steps of generating output signals as a function of fluctuating sound pressure at two points spaced about one-quarter meter apart, band limiting the output signals to a pass band of less than about one octave, generating fluctuating signals that represent amplitude information of the band limited output signals, band limiting the fluctuating amplitude information signals to a pass band of about five hertz to thirty hertz, and comparing the band limited fluctuating amplitude information signals to provide an indication of the spatial impression of the enclosed space.

Abstract: An electroacoustic system for acoustic enhancement of a room that includes a sound source location. The electroacoustic system includes a microphone spaced from the sound source location, an array of loudspeakers arranged in at least four interleaved banks, each bank including at least one loudspeaker, and signal processing electronics connected between the microphone and the speaker banks that includes an input channel, circuitry connecting the microphone to the input channel, a plurality of output channels corresponding in number to the number of speaker banks, circuitry connecting each output channel to a corresponding speaker bank, and at least four statistically independent time-variant reverberation units responsive to input signals from the microphone for producing output signals on the output channels for driving the several banks of speakers.

Abstract: An electronic scale for use in a weight control program in which the weighing histories and desired weight goals for each of a number of individuals are stored. A weigh signal is produced when an individual steps onto the platform of the scale, and the weight is displayed on the top of a column upstanding from the base and spoken. Following entry of information identifying the individual into a keyboard also atop the column, a microprocessor assembles two types of messages, at least one informational and at least one psychologically reinforcing, from stored message components in accordance with the identified individual's stored weighing history and stored desired weight goal and the message is spoken. In response to manual operation of other keys, the scale can calculate any individual's ideal weight goal and can review his stored weight history.

Abstract: A portable electronic dictionary in a hand-held housing which mounts a plurality of alpha-numeric displays and a keyboard. A plug-in module contains a microcomputer and a ROM which stores a plurality of pairs of sequences of alpha-numeric characters and is searched by a central processing unit in the microcomputer under instructions stored as firmware in another ROM forming part of the microcomputer. One sequence of each stored pair is compared with a sequence which is entered into the keyboard and stored in a RAM also forming part of the microcomputer until a match is found. After one or more sequences have been entered into the keyboard and locations of matching pairs are stored in the microcomputer RAM, the pairs of stored sequences can be rolled across the display. Either sequence of each pair can be compared with a sequence entered into the keyboard.
