Patent number: 6486960Abstract: A tool for forming a sensor coil that may be employed, for example, in a fiber optic gyroscope with reduced Shupe effect-induced bias. The tool includes a takeup reel having a cylindrical mandrel with inner flanges fixed to its opposed ends sandwiched between two outer flanges. Each of the inner flanges includes a pair of radially-directed apertures that form a radially-directed wedge therebetween. A recess in the planar portion of each of the outer flanges that contacts an inner flange is aligned with the apertures. This permits the winding of the sensor coil to form climbing turns at the ends of wound layers that lie outside an encapsulated fiber pack. Such turns, which join layers with overlying layers, avoid crossovers and the resultant stress that contributes significantly to Shupe effect-induced bias. A sensor coil having reduced internal stress is thus also provided.Type: GrantFiled: February 27, 2001Date of Patent: November 26, 2002Assignee: Litton Systems, Inc.Inventors: Amado Cordova, Thomas McLean, Thomas Meloeny

Patent number: 6485346Abstract: The present invention relates to electronics and particularly to field emitters used in M-type microwave devices. The design of a multi-layer field emitter is proposed which has at least one operating film and supporting films, providing mechanical strength and preventing penetration of corrosive materials into the operating film at high operating temperatures. The supporting films could be produced from the same material or material with linear expansion coefficients equal or close to that of the operating film material. Built-in mechanical stress can cause not only deformation but also a break of the film during its exploitation in a wide range of temperatures. In the inventive structure the thermal stresses in the operating film during an emission from its surface are lower due to good thermal contact with supporting films.Type: GrantFiled: May 26, 2000Date of Patent: November 26, 2002Assignee: Litton Systems, Inc.Inventor: Vladimir Makhov

Patent number: 6481849Abstract: An autostereo projection system uses multiple projectors to form an essentially seamless and extended field of view. Each projector is registered to a CRT display. Shutter elements in each projector create multiple pupils for each CRT display. Each CRT display is driven with different images for each shutter pupil. Seamlessness is promoted by the use of a tunable optical diffuser as part of a common lenticular viewing, lens.Type: GrantFiled: February 27, 2001Date of Patent: November 19, 2002Assignee: .Litton Systems, Inc.Inventors: Graham Martin, Joseph L. Patent number: 6483231Abstract: A image intensifier tube (14) includes a housing (18) carrying a photocathode (22) and a microchannel plate (24). The housing also receives axially extending fine-dimension spacing structure (22a) interposed around an active area 22b of the photocathode and the microchannel plate to establish and maintain a selected fine-dimension, precise PC-to-MCP spacing between these structures. The housing includes yieldable deformable electrical contact structure (56′) for establishing and maintaining contact with the microchannel plate, and yieldable deformable sealing structure (58) allowing axial movement of the photocathode relative to the housing structure as the tube is assembled and the axial spacing structure controls PC-to-MCP spacing. The result is that the PC-to-MCP spacing dimension of the tube is largely isolated from dimensional variabilities of the housing and is established and maintained precisely during manufacturing of the tube despite stack up of tolerances for the housing and its components.Type: GrantFiled: May 7, 1999Date of Patent: November 19, 2002Assignee: Litton Systems, Inc.Inventor: Michael Jude Iosue

Patent number: 6477303Abstract: An optical interface between circuit cards, more particularly between optical paths on a circuit card and a mainboard, is manufactured using bulk silicon micromachining technology. Silicon components of the interface are chemically etched and mass produced at a reduced cost for a higher degree of accuracy and precision than is available for mechanically produced interfaces. By use of micromachining technology to manufacture mating components of an interface, dimensional tolerances are possible which cannot be produced with conventional machining techniques. The resulting interface includes a pair of micromachined silicon substrates for mounting on a pair of circuit cards, each of the substrates having fiducial features, detents or cavities for aligning with the other substrate and thereby for aligning the two circuit cards. The optical path on a first circuit card may include an optical fiber mounted thereon.Type: GrantFiled: May 15, 2000Date of Patent: November 5, 2002Assignee: Litton Systems, Inc.Inventor: Barry K. Patent number: 6472242Abstract: A Q-switched microlaser is provided that is capable of supporting a zig-zag resonation pattern in response to side pumping of the active gain medium so as to effectively lengthen the microresonator cavity without having to physically lengthen the microresonator cavity. As such, the microlaser can generate pulses having greater pulse widths and correspondingly greater pulse energies and average power levels than the pulses provided by conventional microlasers of a similar size. A corresponding fabrication method is also provided according to one embodiment of the present invention that permits a plurality of side pumped Q-switched microlasers to be fabricated in an efficient and repeatable manner.Type: GrantFiled: January 24, 2002Date of Patent: October 29, 2002Assignee: Litton Systems, Inc.Inventors: Brian Lee Peterson, Daniel Peter Talenti, Emil John Bero

Patent number: 6450943Abstract: An anti-G system is used to combat the push-pull effect experienced by airmen during and after a transition from a period of low or negative G force levels to high G force levels. The anti-G system includes an anti-G controller configured to receive signals indicative of airman acceleration and anti-G garment pressure. The anti-G controller is coupled to a valve controller controlling fill and vent valves controlling the pressure level in the anti-G garment. As the anti-G controller receives acceleration signals indicating G force levels over time, the controller calculates whether the anti-G garment pressure should be increased or decreased and transmits signals to the valve controller to increase or decrease anti-G garment pressure. Increasing the anti-G garment pressure compensates for the airman's loss of tolerance to high G levels immediately after exposure to a period of low or negative G levels.Type: GrantFiled: January 18, 2000Date of Patent: September 17, 2002Assignee: Litton Systems, Inc.Inventors: Victor P. Patent number: 6447653Abstract: The present invention provides a method for shaping a mask to reduce coating non-uniformity in the radial direction. A test run of the ion beam sputtering system coats a stationary glass plate having the same area and shape as the platen. The resulting coating thickness is measured across the surface of the glass plate and plotted as a function of position. This is the plot of the flux distribution. The coating rate pattern is determined by coating thickness by coating time. The desired width of the mask, which takes the form of a segment of a radial band is adjusted to obtain the desired average coating rate for the entire segment, masked and unmasked. This is repeated for each radial band. All these radial widths put together design the functional form of the mask, the use of which provides a uniform coating of the platen in a radial direction.Type: GrantFiled: October 11, 2000Date of Patent: September 10, 2002Assignee: Litton Systems Inc.Inventors: William Debley, Leo Lam, Radhakrishna Mandyam, Dhirubhai Patel
