  • Patent number: 10596237
Abstract: Pneumonia due to the fungus Pneumocystis jirovecii is a life-threatening infection that occurs in immunocompromised patients. The inability to culture the organism as well as the lack of a sequenced genome has hindered antigen discovery that could be useful in developing effective vaccines, therapeutic antibodies and diagnostic methods. A method of surface proteomics of Pneumocystis murina that reliably detects surface proteins that are conserved in Pneumocystis jirovecii is described. In particular, eight identified P. murina surface proteins are described. Methods of eliciting immune responses against the identified proteins, generating therapeutic antibodies against the identified proteins, as well as diagnostic methods based on the identified peptides are described.

  • Publication number: 20200091764
Abstract: Systems, methods, and non-transitory computer-readable storage media for a fast power network simulator. A system configured per this disclosure can use identify a power network, the power network comprising generators, transmission lines, and loads, and receive a model of the power network. The model of the power network can include: models of the generators modeled as differential equations, and models of the transmission lines and the loads modeled as algebraic equations. The system can convert, via a processor, the algebraic equations of the models of the transmission lines and the loads to additional differential equations, then combine, via the processor, the differential equations and the additional differential equations, to yield combined differential equations. The system can then iteratively solve linear equations, via the processor, associated with the combined differential equations, to yield solutions, and output the solutions as part of a power simulation of the power network.

  • Patent number: 10590178
Abstract: Chimeric double peptide vaccines are disclosed, useful for inducing active immunity against Candida fungal infections. The chimeric peptide comprises an Fba peptide and an Met6 peptide, covalently linked to one another, with or without an intermediate linker. Fba and Met6 are cell surface components of Candida. When used as a vaccine, the chimeric double peptide vaccine induces stronger protective immunity against fungal infection than does the Fba peptide alone, or the Met6 peptide alone, or a mixture (not covalently linked) of the two peptides.

  • Patent number: 10568939
Abstract: An intervention for sleep disorders comprises collagen, a gelatin peptide, or the amino acid glycine; L-theanine; lactucopicrin, deoxylactucopicrin, or another lactucopicrin derivative; hyaluronic acid; epigallocatechin gallate; and quinic acid. The intervention helps regulate pro-inflammatory biomarkers that are often associated with insomnia development and progression. These biomarkers include cytokines and enzymes associated with tryptophan degradation. Inhibition of these enzymes and cytokines improves tryptophan availability and sleep quality, and allows individuals to sleep better with fewer side effects. The novel composition promotes high-quality, deep sleep.

  • Patent number: 10465202
Abstract: Transformed plants are disclosed with enhanced resistance to abiotic stresses, such as salt stress, water stress, or temperature stress. Also disclosed are vectors useful for making such transformed plants, and methods of transforming plants to enhance resistance to abiotic stresses, such as salt stress, water stress, or temperature stress. For example, the Spartina alterniflora ADF gene SaADF2 enhances resistance when transformed into rice Oryza sativa. Transgenic rice plants that expressed higher levels of Spartina ADF were more resistant to salt, drought, and cold. There was improved growth, higher photosynthesis, and increased grain yield as compared to wild-type (WT) rice.

  • Publication number: 20190320655
Abstract: Modulation of inward potassium ion conductance with structurally diverse small-molecules in the arthropod salivary gland induces arthropod salivary gland failure that results in a reduction or elimination in the ability of the arthropod to feed. Administering Kir channel inhibitors reduces food intake, increases feeding time, reduces salivary gland secretion, induces mortality, and reduces transmission of vector-borne pathogens. Kir channel inhibitors induce these adverse effects in ticks, mosquitoes, horn flies, and aphids.
