Patent number: 10160062Abstract: A braze preform is provided that includes a filler metal and a luminescent material that covers at least a portion of the filler metal and that can luminesce when exposed to a black light. The luminescent material may include a luminescent ink and a solvent that are mixed together before being applied to filler metal. Presence of the braze preform may be determined using automated equipment by detecting luminescence of the braze preform with a sensor. A decision may be made on whether to advance a parts assembly for brazing based on the determination of presence or absence of the braze preform on such parts assembly.Type: GrantFiled: December 28, 2015Date of Patent: December 25, 2018Assignee: Lucas-Milhaupt, Inc.Inventors: Lawrence A. Patent number: 9314862Abstract: Systems and methods for evenly applying a flux coating to any number of different shaped parts with a single machine are described. The systems and methods provide advantages in that the flux coating may be applied accurately within 2% to 4% of desired thickness with 85% to 95% of the total yield of flux being applied, this minimizing waste. Thousands of parts may be batch treated with a single machine without operator input.Type: GrantFiled: May 30, 2014Date of Patent: April 19, 2016Assignee: Lucas-Milhaupt, Inc.Inventor: Daniel J. Patent number: 9157134Abstract: A homogenous brazing material essentially consisting of relatively low amounts of silver and nickel together with copper, zinc, and other constituents is provided. The brazing material has a working temperature exceeding 630° F. and is preferably between about 1250° F. and 1500° F. The brazing material preferably has about 30 percent by weight of silver, about 36 percent by weight of copper, about 32 percent by weight of zinc, and about 2 percent by weight of nickel. The addition of nickel in the above-specified amount improves resistance against interface corrosion in aqueous solutions, aids in the strength of the alloy, and provides improved wettability on ferrous and non-ferrous substrates. The brazing material may also include a flux, such as a core or a coating.Type: GrantFiled: October 21, 2010Date of Patent: October 13, 2015Assignee: Lucas-Milhaupt, Inc.Inventors: Alan Belohlav, Marcin Kuta

Patent number: 8507833Abstract: Systems and methods for brazing and soldering using low and non-silver based filler metals are described. The present invention includes methods and systems for brazing and soldering using copper based or bronze type filler metals in lieu of silver containing filler metals. The systems and methods provide advantages in that the bronze filler metals are substantially cheaper than silver alloy filler metals that are commonly used. Furthermore, the present invention uses a low-temperature, water-soluble flux that provides for easier cleanup after the completion of the brazing process. Additionally, the present invention provides significant advantages over traditional copper brazing in that it allows for a one-piece workflow and eliminates the need for large component pieces and filler metal inventories. This results in a significant decrease in capital expenditures and utility costs.Type: GrantFiled: December 11, 2007Date of Patent: August 13, 2013Assignee: Lucas-Milhaupt, Inc.Inventor: Alan Belohlav

Patent number: 6840429Abstract: A coating composition and its use in a metallization process that facilitates bonding of brazing filler metals to treated refractory surfaces, such as ceramics. The coating can be applied in preselected areas of the refractory surface to define a target area for brazing. In one embodiment, the coating composition is applied to a refractory material prior to brazing, the composition including (i) a group IVB transition metal component selected from the group consisting of a group IVB transition metal, a hydride thereof, and mixtures of group IVB metals and/or hydrides thereof, (ii) a binder material, and (iii) a fluid carrier, disclosed embodiments, the group IVB transition metal component is titanium, and the binder material is a combination of a styrene block copolymer and a hydrocarbon resin.Type: GrantFiled: September 24, 2002Date of Patent: January 11, 2005Assignee: Lucas-Milhaupt, Inc.Inventors: Lawrence A. Patent number: 6830632Abstract: A wire preform suitable for use in brazing components to one another. The preform is made from a length of wire having a core of flux material, and a longitudinal seam or gap that extends over the length of the wire. The seam is formed so that when heated, the flux material flows from the core and out of the seam. The length of wire is in the form of a loop having a certain circumference so that when the preform is heated, the flux material disperses uniformly from the circumference of the preform for evenly treating the surface of a component on which the preform is placed. The length of wire may include a silver alloy.Type: GrantFiled: July 24, 2002Date of Patent: December 14, 2004Assignee: Lucas Milhaupt, Inc.Inventors: Charles E. Fuerstenau, Alan Belohlav

The container comprises a base member and a removable outer cover. The base member comprises a flat circular base plate having a hollow cylindrical projection on one side thereof on which the coil is placed and within the hollow recess thereof flux is stored. In one embodiment, the flux is contained in the hollow projection itself and an inner removable cap is provided to close off the open end of the projection. In another embodiment the flux is contained in a small capped jar which is disposed in the recess. The projection includes an open-ended storage compartment extending transversely thereinto in which the brush is stored.
