Abstract: A system that enables end-to-end networking within CDMA oriented networks. Several base stations operating within the CDMA oriented network simultaneously receive data from the same mobile unit. A distributed algorithm operating within each of the base stations monitors the reception of the data from the mobile unit, as well as commands/instructions from other base stations. One of the base stations is appointed as a dominant base station. The appointment of a dominant base station can be done randomly or based on the quality of data being received by the base station. When the dominant base station detects a decrease in the quality of received data from the mobile unit, the dominant base station instructs the remainder of the base stations to forward any data received from the mobile to the dominant base station.

Abstract: An apparatus includes an optical resonator and a passive optical device. The optical resonator has first and second optical reflectors and an optical cavity interposed between the reflectors. The optical resonator includes an electro-optically responsive material. Abstract: The present invention is a methodology for providing packet aggregation based on transmission window size to achieve improved transport efficiency. One embodiment of the invention includes the steps of receiving an indication of a transmission window size for packets to be transmitted from a first location to a second location where the transmission window size provided by a flow control message. The transmission window size is utilized to determine a bundling factor for transmission of packets from said first location to said second location, the bundling factor being a lesser of a maximum bundling factor and the transmission window size. A transmission window size threshold represents a boundary for a size of a transmission window when transmission of existing frames may be delayed. The frames are bundled according to the bundling factor if the transmission window size is greater than the transmission window size threshold.

Abstract: A method for selecting an optimum delay length in a polarization mode dispersion (PMD) compensator configured with a constant-length delay line and deployed in an optical communication system. The optimum delay length depends on the data modulation format, bit rate, and/or signal bandwidth and is preferably selected such that outage probability in the communication system is at a minimum. System performance of a PMD compensator configured with a constant-length delay line having the optimum length approaches that of a PMD compensator configured with a variable-length delay line. The method extends the application range of constant-length delay line PMD compensators while reducing the cost of implementing high-performance PMD compensation.
Abstract: The present invention provides a method for establishing a multi-user call in a communication system. The communication system receives a call request to establish a group call with a shared group of users. The communication system determines which of the plurality of individual users should be excluded from the call and connects each of the group of included users to establish a multi-user call. The communication system preferably indicates that a unit was not currently available, for example by playing a prerecorded message, playing a tone and also preferably indicates why a unit was not available.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for tunably delaying a signal and using that delayed signal in a duobinary transmitter is described. The transmitted duobinary signal is representative of the binary signal, and is formed by, among other things, introducing into a copy of the binary signal a delay that may be adjusted to be greater than or less than the bit period of the signal. Once the binary signal has been converted into a duobinary signal, it may then be converted into an optical duobinary signal. Alternatively, the conversion from binary to duobinary in accordance with the invention may be performed in the optical domain.

Abstract: A method of solvating metal ions in an aromatic organic liquid. The method includes adding an ammonium salt having an organic acid reagent to the aromatic organic liquid. The organic acid reagent comprises a carboxylate having eight (8) or less carbon atoms. Abstract: A wireless data communication system includes a high speed dedicated physical control channel (EU-DPCCH) used with transmissions from a mobile device to support an uplink high speed data channel. In one example the EU-DPCCH has a sub frame structure that is the same as an associated dedicated data channel and a fixed spreading factor. The EU-DPCCH allows communicating control information from the mobile device such as a pilot reference, hybrid automatic repeat request information, and backlog information regarding a buffer of the mobile device.
Abstract: The disclosed embodiments relate to a system and method for providing user specific beams in a fixed beam network. In one embodiment, there is provided a mobile transceiver comprising a first device configured to receive phase reference signal data from a base station, the phase reference signal data being indicative of a first phase reference signal and a second phase reference signal that may be used by the mobile transceiver during a communication session, and a second device configured to determine whether the second phase reference signal is likely to provide improved reception between the base station and the mobile transceiver with respect to the first phase reference signal, wherein the second device is configured to transmit data to the base station, the data being indicative of whether the first phase reference signal or the second phase reference signal is likely to provide improved reception between the base station and the mobile transceiver.
Abstract: Mobile devices are assigned to their correct base stations after taking into consideration interference from all other mobile devices. The resulting assignments are more efficient than previous assignments. In addition, transmit power levels are assigned after each mobile device is assigned to a base station. The assigned power levels allow for more efficient use of power during the transmission of data signals.

Abstract: An apparatus, including an optical ring resonator having a waveguide ring with substantially straight waveguide segments and bent waveguide segments. Abstract: An apparatus and method are provided for manipulating light beams propagated through PLCs in free space. Light beams propagated in through an input/output waveguide of a PLC are propagated through a waveguide array to generate a phased array output at an edge facet of the PLC. The phased array output at the edge facet is spatially Fourier transformed by a lens in free space, generating a spectrally resolved image at the back focal plane of the lens. The spectrally resolved image is reflected, at least in part, by a reflector device and coupled into a desired waveguide array of a PLC to produce a desired output.

Abstract: A method for a wireless network to provide a voice-to-text memo service to a wireless subscriber associated with a mobile device is provided. The method includes: a) routing an active call path associated with the mobile device to a voice-to-text conversion system, b) capturing audio from the active call path for a period of time, and c) converting the captured audio to a text memo to create a voice-to-text memo. In another embodiment, a method for providing a voice-to-text memo service in a wireless network is provided. Additionally, a wireless network is provided. The wireless network includes: means for determining that a subscriber is properly enrolled in a calling plan, a voice-to-text conversion system, means for routing an active call path to the voice-to-text conversion system, a text messaging system, and means for communicating the text memo from the voice-to-text conversion system to the text messaging system.

Abstract: The present invention provides a method and apparatus for dynamically altering a portion of a digital video image based upon a user profile. A source, such as a network feed or video server, sends a digital video image to a broadband network. The broadband network includes a multicast router, a service node, and a broadband access network. The multicast router receives the digital video image and sends it to a video processor. The video processor can be located in the service node or in a subscriber terminal connected to the broadband network. The video processor retrieves a profile associated with a user. The profile includes information pertaining to a desired characteristic relating to the first user. The video processor digitally alters a portion of the digital video image with a replacement digital image based upon the desired characteristic to produce a dynamically altered video image.
Abstract: A digital detector processes at least one received digital signal to generate a squared signal, encodes the squared signal, applies first and second portions of the encoded signal to a multiplier and a look-up element, respectively, and processes outputs of the multiplier and look-up element to generate a detector output signal representative of a power level of the received digital signal. In an illustrative embodiment, the digital detector is configured so as to exhibit a waveform dependence substantially the same as that of an analog logarithmic amplifier detector. The digital detector and analog logarithmic amplifier detector are utilizable in a closed-loop gain control arrangement for providing a desired gain for a signal path of a base station transmitter in a wireless communication system.
