    Abstract: Methods and systems for providing wide-band voice service via a telecommunications switch are described herein. A call can be initiated from a wide-band telecommunications device (e.g., an IP telephone) to another telecommunications device through a gateway (e.g., an IP gateway) associated with one or more telecommunications networks, such as, for example, a WAN, LAN and/or PSTN. One or more digital signals (e.g., 4 or fewer DS0s) can then be reserved for the call, if a telecommunications switch (e.g., a class 5 circuit switch, 5ESS®, etc.) associated with one or more of the telecommunications networks determines that at least one timeslot is available to permit a transfer of the call to the other telecommunications device.

    Abstract: In an over-sampled maximum-likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE) receiver system, the optimal sample spacing is determined for a variety of conditions. In an illustrative implementation, the system includes an optical filter for tightly filtering an incoming optical data signal with an on-off-keying (OOK) non-return-to-zero (NRZ) format, followed by an optical-to-electrical converter, an electrical filter, a sampler, and a MLSE receiver. The sampler samples the filtered electrical data signal twice each bit period with unequal sample spacings. For wide optical filtering bandwidths, the optimal sample spacing occurs at less than 50% of a bit period. For narrow bandwidths, the optimal sample instances occur closer to the maximum eye opening.

The process also includes placing the metal layer in contact with the attached layer of anchored molecules such that the metal layer chemically bonds to free ends of the anchored molecules. The resulting devices produced have superior reliability as compared to conventional prepared devices.

    Abstract: A “user plane” location system for implementing a location based service (“LBS”) such as enterprise fleet tracking includes a number of GPS-enabled wireless mobile units in communication with a wireless network. Location data is periodically transmitted from various “client” mobile units to a “server” mobile unit. The location data relates to the respective physical locations of the client mobile units, and may be determined from GPS signals received by the client mobile units. Once the server mobile unit receives the location data, the location data is processed for use in one or more LBS applications. This may include displaying the location data on a screen or other display of the server mobile unit, including displaying the location data in conjunction with map data. The use of a server mobile unit facilitates portability of the server functionality to remote locations.

The background calibrator also includes an auxiliary signal processor having an ADC connected to at least one corresponding output FIR filter. Additionally, the background calibrator further includes a timing calibration circuit, wherein the timing calibration circuit is configured to select one of the main signal processors, exchange the auxiliary signal processor with the selected main signal processor in the TIADC and connect the selected main signal processor to the timing calibration circuit. In an alternative embodiment, the timing calibration circuit is further configured to reduce a timing mismatch of the selected main signal processor.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed wherein a battery comprises an electrode having at least one nanostructured surface. The nanostructured surface is disposed in a way such that an electrolyte fluid of the battery is prevented from contacting the electrode, thus preventing discharge of the battery when the battery is not in use. When a voltage is passed over the nanostructured surface, the electrolyte fluid is caused to penetrate the nanostructured surface and to contact the electrode, thus activating the battery. In one illustrative embodiment, the battery is an integrated part of an electronics package. In another embodiment, the battery is manufactured as a separate device and is then brought into contact with the electronics package. In yet another embodiment, the electronics package and an attached battery are disposed in a projectile that is used as a military targeting device.
