Abstract: A push-to-talk (“PTT”) group call system, for use as, e.g., a public safety wireless network, includes a CDMA-based 1x-EVDO radio access network operably connected to a PTT server over an IP network. The radio access network includes base stations for radio communications with a number of distributed mobile stations. In carrying out wireless communications, the group call system combines IP-based voice and other real-time multimedia services with the 1x-EVDO radio access network's Broadcast Multicast Service. This allows a number of users to receive the same copy of an IP-based media stream for point-to-multipoint, group transmissions. To reduce call setup times, the group call system uses “standing” call groups, which are ongoing group communication channels pre-established between the PTT server and authorized group users. Thus, mobile stations link to one or more standing call groups of interest upon power-up, prior to users speaking.

Abstract: In the method of estimating a signal-to-interference+noise ratio (SINR), an initial SINR estimate is generated based on a mean of a plurality of samples and a sample variance estimate of the plurality of samples. Abstract: A method and apparatus for reducing the bit rate of multi-input systems that employ space-time coding by displacing in signal space the derivatives of a symbol. A mapped particular symbol is space-time coded to generate transmit-sequences having a phase-shifted version of the particular symbol, the phase-shifted version and the particular symbol differing in phase by an amount other than by 90°, 180°, and 270°. In one embodiment, the particular symbol represents a point in a first symbol constellation and the derivatives of the particular symbol represent points in a displaced symbol constellation. In another embodiment, the particular symbol and another symbol are space-time coded to form the transmit-sequences. The derivatives of the particular symbol represent points in a first symbol constellation and derivatives of the other symbol represent points of a second symbol constellation. The two constellations are displaced versions of each other.
Abstract: A mobile wireless terminal is configured to provide an audible alert to the user in the event of its receipt, while the terminal is on a call, of an indication of an imminent or directed handoff to a carrier or network which would charge the user for roaming. The call is automatically terminated or released within a predetermined time period after the audible alert unless the user performs an act of assent, such as pressing a predetermined key, or speaking a predetermined command, before the expiration of the time period.

Abstract: A method of adjusting equalization parameters in a receiver wherein a bit error rate (BER) in a data stream is measured from the number of corrected bits in data blocks which have an information section and an error correction section. A predetermined equalization parameter is changed, and the bit error rate (BER) after change is again measured to find out how to change the predetermined equalization parameter until an optimum is reached. When adjusting the threshold value of the receiver, the history of occurring bits preceding the actual sampled bit is taken into consideration in that the amount and direction of adjustment is derived from a look-up table.

Abstract: A system is provided to allow a network to obtain the location of a mobile station (e.g. mobile phone) having AGPS/AFLT CDMA capability during an emergency call—without the use of the MPCAP parameter. The MPC invokes the PDE, which is IS-801 AGPS capable, without the MPCAP parameter. The PDE then queries the mobile for its geolocation capabilities, in the absence of the MPCAP parameter. This allows a visited network (e.g. the network in which the mobile station is roaming) to obtain a position (based on IS-801 AGPS/AFLT) for roaming mobile stations that are CDMA AGPS/AFLT capable—without the use of the network MPCAP parameter.

Abstract: A phase-locked loop (PLL) locks onto an input signal to provide an output signal that is proportional in frequency to the input signal. The PLL also detects whether an input signal's frequency falls outside a predetermined range and, whenever the input signal's frequency falls outside of range, the PLL provides a stable output signal at a predetermined frequency. While the PLL is providing a stable output signal in this manner it also monitors the input signal to determine whether the input signal's frequency has returned to within a re-qualification frequency range. If the input signal's frequency does fall within the re-qualification range, the PLL proceeds to lock onto the input signal.
Abstract: A method for exchanging routing information between I-BGP routers within an autonomous system (AS) advantageously enables a solution to both persistent route oscillation problems and transient route oscillation problems which may occur when using I-BGP in a given AS. Conventional I-BGP protocol techniques are extended by enabling I-BGP speakers (e.g., routers) to communicate a set of possible best paths to a given destination, rather than communicating only a single best path, to each of their I-BGP peers within the given AS. Specifically, a plurality of possible best paths to a destination are communicated (where there are in fact more than one) from an I-BGP speaker in a given AS to its I-BGP peers (within the given AS), for each neighboring AS that provides any such paths (i.e., routes to the destination).

Abstract: An algorithm calculates a correction value to be applied to a slot in an adjustment period for power correction. The adjustment period is divided into segments having a plurality of slots, and a target power value is determined for each segment. For each slot, the algorithm determines whether adding a correction value in a given slot would bring the actual accumulative adjustment value closer or farther from the target power value for the segment corresponding to the given slot. The correction value is added to consecutive slots in the segment. The algorithm also checks the total amount of adjustment applied to the slots over a sliding adjustment window to make sure that the total amount of adjustment applied to the slots in the window do not exceed a predetermined maximum threshold.

Abstract: A method and system of decoding data including a padding unit, interleaver unit and decoder. A block of data symbols where each data symbol represents an encoded data bit, is received by the padding unit. Abstract: A method and system for implementing hard handover in wireless telecommunications network. The method includes connecting a call from user equipment in a first radio coverage area to a first media gateway in a mobile switching center via a first connection point in said first media gateway and further connecting the call from the first media gateway to another party via a second connection point in the first media gateway. Abstract: The inventor proposes herein a novel optical monitor requiring only a single fiber-coupled photodetector. In one embodiment of the present invention, the optical monitor further includes an optical coupler for tapping a portion of an optical signal, a tunable filter for filtering the tapped optical signal at a predetermined frequency, and a Faraday rotator mirror for removing any polarization dependence of the tapped optical signal and for reflecting the filtered optical signal back through the tunable filter and the coupler. Subsequently, the photodetector of the optical monitor measures the power of the filtered optical signal. The optical spectrum of the optical signal is thus measured by scanning the tunable filter across the band of the optical signal and measuring the power of the optical signal as a function of the optical frequency of the tunable filter.
Abstract: A methodology is provided for fault detection and service restoration in a multiservice switch on a per flow basis. An ingress source transmits the same data over each of two redundant cores. An egress receiver selects on a per flow bass which core to utilize. Bi-directional flows are not necessarily grouped together. The basic approach to fault detection is to assume that the two cores are not in lock step, but that the shelves are continually monitoring link flows for control path data as well as user data. The path monitoring is accomplished using a combination of arbiter and aggregator functions found in the service shelves and core interface cards, respectively. The arbiter transmits link test cells to both cores on a per flow basis, wherein the link test cells traverse and are monitored by respective aggregators to and from each core. When an egress arbiter determines that a flow is bad, it initiates a switch to the alternative source core, from which the flow would continue.

Abstract: A band edge amplitude reduction system changes the filtering characteristics of a receiver based on the amplitude of signal(s) adjacent to an edge of the operating band of the receiver and/or of signals not under the power control of the receiver. For example, the receiver measures the power level over a bandwidth at the band edges of the operating band of the receiver. If the signals adjacent to the operating band are strong enough relative to the signal power within the operating band, overload protection circuitry changes the filtering characteristics of the receiver to improve the attenuation of the signal(s) from the adjacent band(s). In certain embodiments, the overload protection circuitry switches in filter(s) with a narrower bandwidth to attenuate the signal(s) from adjacent band(s) at the edge(s) of the operating band of the receiver, thereby preventing interference with or the overload of the receiver by signals from outside the operating band and/or not under the power control of the receiver.

Abstract: In the design and/or construction of a wireless communication system, a parameter optimization determination is performed. Such determination is accomplished by first clustering parameters with strong interdependence. In a second operations a subset of the clustered parameters are removed from consideration by imposing constraints on the system and/or on the parameters to yield a similar system determination problem. In a third operation, parameters remaining after the second operation are optimized for a chosen performance metric. Finally, parameters removed in the second operation are optimized for a chosen performance metric with the parameters optimized in the third operation, set to an optimized value determined in the third operation.
Abstract: An apparatus for aligning the cores of the two optical waveguides. The apparatus includes a control loop for receiving an aligning signal launched through the core of one of the optical waveguides. The control loop may effectuate the aligning signal to propagate through the cores of the optical waveguides. The control loop may include a detector for generating a detecting signal in response to detecting the aligning signal. Moreover, the control loop may include a machine-vision system for generating a manipulation signal in response to the detecting signal. The control loops may also include a controller for physically aligning one of the optical waveguides with respect to the other optical waveguide in response to the manipulation signal. The controller may perform the physically alignment by means of a robotic tool. The apparatus may also include a means for splicing the optical waveguides.
