Abstract: A high-speed parallel interface for communicating data between integrated circuits is disclosed. The interface is implemented by a transmitter and receiver pair and a single-ended parallel interconnect bus coupling to the transmitter and receiver pair. As opposed to transmitting small swing signals over differential signal lines, the transmitter transmits data to the receiver at full swing over the single-ended parallel interconnect bus. The invention can be implemented with simple CMOS circuitry that does not consume large die area. Accordingly, many link interfaces can be implemented on a single chip to provide a large data bandwidth.

Abstract: An interface circuit that interconnects a terminal device at an extension station with the adjunct port circuit of a telephone of a business communications system (BCS), such as a digital PBX. The interface circuit enables a call diverted to a BCS telephone to be answered at the extension station. The interface circuit receives a ringing control signal from the adjunct port circuit when its BCS telephone is rung on an incoming call. This causes a ringing current source in the interface to apply ringing current to the extension station simultaneously with ringing of the BCS telephone.
Abstract: Performing selective update of a content addressable memory (CAM) following restart of an access control module (ACM) at a network node involves maintaining a restart CAM entry database in shared memory. When the ACM restarts, instead of reentering all CAM entries into the CAM or reading the contents of the CAM, the ACM only updates the CAM with the entries that were modified while the ACM was offline, prior to restart.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for performing authentication in a communications system is provided. The method includes receiving a request for authentication from a server, the request for authentication including a first and a second random challenge, and comparing the first random challenge and the second random challenge. The method further includes denying the request for authentication in response to determining that the first random challenge is substantially the same as the second random challenge, and transmitting an encoded value to the server in response to determining that the first random challenge is different from the second random challenge, wherein the encoded value is generated based on the first and second random challenge and a key that is not shared with the server.
Abstract: An optical label-switching method and apparatus in which a payload signal is modulated on an optical carrier through differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) by a Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM), and a label signal is imposed on the DPSK signal by the same MZM through an optical amplitude change effected by modulating the DPSK drive signal or MZM bias.
Abstract: A flexible scheduler in an ATM switch. The scheduler enables each connection to be served fairly according to associated quality of service parameters, while enabling several other features. A connection can be shaped while minimizing additional memory and processing requirements. Specifically, the conformance time of cells of a connections need not be stored when significant backlog exists in the transmission of the cells. The shaping rate can be dynamically varied. Sequence of cells forming a frame are buffered in the ATM switch until the end of frame cell is received. All the cells of a frame are then sent in quick succession.

Abstract: A circuit comprising an active pull-up device coupled to a level shift circuit is coupled to a one-wire bus to allow communication devices coupled to the bus to better detect digital communication signals propagating through the bus. The level shift circuit provides a reference voltage signal that is typically above the circuit ground. Communication devices coupled to the bus are better able to detect digital communication signals propagating through the bus because such signals are raised above at least a portion of the noise signals on the bus.

Abstract: Embodiments of the system, and method provide for identification of a number being dialed on an incoming call to a multi-line terminal. The method may have the steps of: receiving a call at a network, the call being for a multi-line terminal having at least two different numbers; checking a mobile subscriber database for a data entry indicative of the terminal being a multi-line mobile terminal; and presenting not only caller identification information to the called terminal, but also presenting the number that was dialed by the calling party so that a called party would know which of the at least two different numbers was being called. The multi-line terminal may be a multi-line mobile terminal that has at least two distinct and independent numbers assigned thereto.

Abstract: A shared medium provides a limited amount of bandwidth for communication between nodes. A contention based access protocol is used to access the medium from the nodes. A guaranteed amount of the bandwidth is reserved for quality of service transmission. A controller computes amounts of assigned bandwidth for the nodes so as to track an on-line predicted demand for bandwidth of each node. The amounts of assigned bandwidth are computed so that the sum of the amounts of assigned bandwidth not exceeding a total available amount of bandwidth minus the amount of guaranteed bandwidth reserved for quality of service transmissions. The controller sets regulators in the respective nodes so as to prevent the nodes from attempting to use more than the amounts of assigned bandwidth for the nodes for transmissions other than quality of service transmissions.
Abstract: The inter-switch interconnect system functions to interface a packet switch with a legacy Time Division Multiplexed switch without requiring any changes to the Time Division Multiplexed switch. The inter-switch interconnect system implements a packet-based call connection system that is triggered by the standard CCS7-ISUP signaling protocol, where the packet-capable Time Division Multiplexed switch controls the set-up and tear-down of the packet connections through the Asynchronous Transfer Mode network to the non-packet-capable Time Division Multiplexed switch using the standard CCS7-ISUP signaling protocol for both incoming and outgoing calls. The packet-capable Time Division Multiplexed switch controls call connections both to and from the legacy non-packet-capable Time Division Multiplexed switch.
Abstract: A system for, and method of, emulating hardware failures and a Joint Test Action Group (JTAG) test tool incorporating the same. In one embodiment, the system includes: (1) a vector generator configured to generate at least one device failure emulation vector and (2) a JTAG interface associable with the vector generator and configured to deliver the device failure emulation vector to hardware thereby to test system software associated with the hardware.
Abstract: This invention relates to a method and apparatus for assessing quality of service for communication networks. More particularly, the invention is directed to assessing quality of service in circuit and packet switched networks by way of a computer simulation. Preferably, the information necessary to conduct the assessment activity is available via the internet from a web server that also compiles statistical data on the resultant quality of service assessments.
Abstract: A colorless, waveguide-grating-router-based tunable dispersion compensator includes a planar lightwave circuit and a deformable mirror, optically coupled to each other by a plano-cylindrical glass lens such that a fast tuning speed and single-knob dispersion adjustment are obtained. In a further aspect of the present invention, the waveguide-grating router is pinched, symmetrical about its center line, and has a half-wave plate inserted therein to provide polarization independence. In a still further aspect of the present invention, the deformable mirror includes, reflective film attached to opposing piezo-electric actuators.

Abstract: A system and method for controlling call admission in a wireless communications network recursively estimates reverse link load levels as a function of changes in base station receive power and/or the number of mobiles served in the cell/sector. In one implementation, a call admission controller utilizes multiple load level estimating methods, whereby a first method estimates load as a function of changes in base station receive power and changes in the number of served mobiles. The call admission controller uses a second method to recursively update load level estimates as proportionally changing with number of users. The call admission controller may utilize a third estimate method as an accuracy check based on a changes in base station receive power measurements. The call admission controller outputs a call blocking command when load level estimates exceed a threshold to avoid cell/sector overload conditions and network instability.
Abstract: A method for establishing a call between a calling party and at least one called party via a call switching network. The method includes calculating a call charge per minute rate based upon a number of rate-determining parameters, notifying the calling party of the call charge per minute rate, receiving input from said calling party based upon the call charge per minute rate; timing the call, calculating the balance available for the call, informing the calling party of the balance in real time, and disconnecting the call when the call balance is zero.
Abstract: Orthogonal sequences can be developed and used for use training and synchronizing in CDMA and TDMA systems. In particular, once a sequence is developed that has the length of the product of the channel length and the number of transmit antennas, the sequence is offset by a different amount for each transmit antenna. For example, each sequence could be offset by a multiple of the channel length for each transmit antenna, where the multiple ranges from 0 to N?1, where N is the number of transmit antennas. Furthermore, by not using exactly the same amount of offset shifting for each transmit antenna, e.g., not having each signal offset by the channel length, but keeping the overall total shifting the same, e.g., the average of each shift is the channel length, it is possible to determine at a receiver from which transmit antenna a particular signal originated.

Abstract: Systems and techniques for scheduling of data transmission to remote mobile units so as to provide at least an acceptably low level of delay. A scheduler computes an urgency value for each data stream serving a mobile unit and sets the urgency value equal to the highest urgency value of a data stream serving the mobile unit. The scheduler computes a scheduling priority for each mobile unit based on a computation that takes into account the urgency value of the mobile unit and schedules the highest priority mobile unit for service, selecting the highest priority data stream serving the mobile unit scheduled for transmission. The urgency value for a data stream depends on the sensitivity of the data stream to delay and the delay experienced by the data stream. Computation of the urgency value may take into account a delay limit associated with the data stream.
