Abstract: In a wireless transmitter, a class B or class C amplifier is used as a power amplifier for boosting the power level of a signal to be transmitted. To linearize the power amplifier, a feedback mechanism is included in the transmitter. The feedback mechanism provides for adjustment of a feedback gain which affects the overall gain of the signal, thereby effectively controlling the signal power level. In addition, a phase difference between components of the signal and the feedback versions thereof is corrected to increase the linearity of the power amplifier and stabilize the feedback mechanism.
Abstract: A limitation of modeling three-dimensional objects in a virtual world occurs when a user moves within the world and still wishes a certain target object to remain visible, instead of being occluded by other surfaces in front of the object along the direction the user is viewing the target object. Therefore, in accordance with the principles of the invention, a target object which is to remain visible, regardless of the user's view point, is duplicated and modeled as being located a close distance to the user, but scaled accordingly to make the cloned object appear to be farther away from the viewpoint of the user and co-located with and of the same size and orientation as the target object. In this manner, as the user moves within the world, surfaces located in front of the target object do not occlude the cloned object from the user's view, thus appearing to give that same property to the target object.
Abstract: The invention comprises a system and method for correcting jitter and frame erasure in packet voice communication systems with out severely affecting the voice quality of the signal to be easily noticed by a listener. A packet is retrieved from a buffer, a pitch of the packet is determined, and the pitch of the packet is processed in a manner determinative of whether a next packet has arrived.
Abstract: The invention comprises a system and method for transmitting and receiving between voice switches compressed multiplexed packets. The invention efficiently utilizes a Digital Signal Level Zero (DS0) to provide multiplexed voice traffic between two voice switches.
Abstract: The present invention provides a transmission device and related system for use in high speed optical transmission systems. By changing the optical/electrical delay in one or more arms of a receiver, dispersion effects can be compensated for without using costly, high dispersion optical fiber and optical amplifiers or other like techniques to control dispersion.
Abstract: A low-rate data transmission system and method are disclosed that use the Faraday effect to modulate the polarization state of light traveling in an optical fiber. The resulting change in polarization is used to communicate information over the fiber. The low-rate data transmission system includes a low-rate signal source producing current in a wire coil wrapped around an optical fiber. Information is conveyed in accordance with the present invention by the selectively introducing a polarization change into the light carried by the fiber. Generally, the source light at the input of the optical fiber can be randomly polarized and information is conveyed in accordance with the present invention by the presence or absence of a predefined polarization introduced into the light. The longitudinal magnetic field produced by a current in the coil rotates the plane of polarization of the light, in accordance with the well-known Faraday effect.
Abstract: In a CDMA communication system, a multiple rake finger is coupled to a plurality of antennae. The multiple rake finger includes one correlator per antenna. The correlators in the multiple rake finger are coupled, via a delay circuit, to a single code generator. The delay circuit compensates for delays which occur in transmission as well as delays due to the separate distance of the antennae.
Abstract: In the method for managing the use of temporary mobile identifiers (TIDs), the mobile and the network each store a list of TIDs for the mobile. Newly determined TIDs are added to the respective TID list such that the TIDs are stored in chronological order. To determine a new TID, the network sends a first challenge to the mobile and the mobile sends a second challenge to the network as part of a TID update protocol. The network and the mobile then determine the new TID based on the first and second challenges. As communication between the mobile and the network continues, the respective TID lists are updated. Namely, when either the network or the mobile confirms a TID, the TIDs older than the confirmed TID are deleted from the TID list. In communicating with one another, the mobile will use the oldest TID on its TID list, while the network will use the newest TID on its TID list.
Abstract: When there is an inability to convey motion that is occurring in the frames of a video source by a full-frame-rate transmission, a surrogate effect, other than another form of motion, may be used as a compensation technique to better convey motion to a viewer. The surrogate effect employed may be a) fading, b) wiping, c) dissolving, d) blurring, e) enhancing the contrast, f) enhancing one or more colors, g) enhancing the brightness, h) scaling the image, and i) the like. How the surrogate effect is applied to any frame may be a function of one or more video frames. Optionally, more than one effect may be used in combination. Advantageously, a more continuous sense of motion is perceived by a viewer. In one embodiment of the invention, full-frame-rate video is initially available. A controller monitors the ability to transmit or display full-frame-rate video.

Abstract: An imaging arrangement technique is used to align a first waveguide on a first wafer to a second waveguide on a second wafer. The adaptive imaging arrangement is used on both the first and second waveguides when the first and second wafers are orthogonal to each other. In one embodiment, my imaging arrangement is used in an N×N optical cross-connect constructed using orthogonal abutting input and output planar arrays of N switches. If N is not too large, the optimum construction involves only two stages of trees, each incorporating an adaptive imaging arrangement allowing the input and output trees to be directly joined together without need for precise alignment.
Abstract: Disclosed is an apparatus and method for calculating a predistortion function from power amplifier characteristics. A predistortion module generates a predistorted signal in response to an input signal and predistortion coefficients received from a predistortion function calculating module. The predistortion function calculating module generates the predistortion coefficients in response to the given amplifier characteristics. Polynomial fitting is used to obtain the predistortion coefficients. In particular, the input signal is represented by single or multiple sectors having multiple points and then predistortion coefficients are calculated for each sector.

The inner edge local interfacial shearing stress is substantially equal in magnitude to the inner edge global interfacial shearing stress causing the strength of the bi-material bonded assembly to be substantially the same as a like structure wherein 2l substantially equals half the assembly length. Further are a method of fabricating a bi-material assembly, and a semiconductor device and fabrication method.
Abstract: Capacity demands are routed in an network including at least one ring having a pair of hub nodes and a number of additional nodes. A pair of routing trees is generated for the ring, with each of the routing trees specifying paths between nodes of the ring, and having as its root a corresponding one of the hub nodes of the ring. The routing trees are utilized to route capacity demands from nodes of the ring to other portions of the network, such as other rings. The routing trees for a given ring of the network are configured such that the two hub nodes of the ring are adjacent in each of the routing trees of that ring. In addition, the routing trees for the given ring are directed edge disjoint, such that if a link corresponding to one edge of a tree fails, an affected demand is routed to the other hub node of the ring using the other routing tree of the ring.
Abstract: The penalties associated with relying on layer-4 to handle packets lost as a result of a handoff can be reduced by forwarding, in response to a handoff request from a first base station to a second base station, at least one layer-2 frame of a layer-3 packet destined to/from the wireless terminal that has been passed down from layer-3 to layer-2, and so is indicated to have been transmitted at layer-3 even though not all of the layer-2 frames of the layer-3 packet have actually been transmitted. In one embodiment of the invention, each of the at least one layer-2 frames may be encapsulated together in a special layer-3 packet that is transferred from the first base to the second base station in the usual manner of inter-base-station communication. Advantageously, packets are not lost at layer-4 due to handoffs. Thus, layer-4 retransmissions are not required, and so delays in the network are reduced.

Abstract: An automated method for the development of fixed-point algorithms which have been initially implemented as floating-point code which advantageously hides most of the tedious operations that need to be performed across the various stages of such a conversion procedure inside the definitions of a set of C++ classes. With the aid of these C++ class definitions, the fixed-point design process (i. e., the conversion from floating-point code to equivalent fixed-point code) is substantially simplified. Specifically, in accordance with the preferred embodiment of the present invention, a programmer need only to include and/or exclude certain previously defined header files, and to change the variable declarations within the floating-point code, in order to simulate the source codes across various stages of the conversion process.
