  • Patent number: 6353602
Abstract: A code-division multiple access base station assisted quality soft handoff algorithm screens or filters out candidate pilot signals from a pilot strength measurement message generated by a mobile station and provides the revised pilot strength measurement message to the mobile switching center of the mobile communication system. The mobile switching center subsequently conducts handoff processing in accordance with the revised pilot strength measurement message. If the combined pilot signal strength of the existing mobile station active legs is less than a first threshold, the current pilot strength measurement message is maintained. If the combined pilot signal strength of the existing mobile station active legs is greater than or equal to the first threshold, all candidate pilot signals are deleted from the pilot strength measurement message such that only pilot signals of existing mobile station active legs remain.

  • Patent number: 6353806
Abstract: An apparatus provides for automatically generating symbolic models and developing a system level hardware simulator. The system to be simulated is subdivided into a plurality of system layers which are associated with symbolic model symbols. The specification of a symbolic model symbol represents a functionality of a system layer, a subset of the system hierarchy. Each symbolic model symbol reads from its allocated memory, gathers input from associated symbolic model symbols, updates its register contents and broadcasts updates to associated symbolic model symbols, as per its specification, completing a cycle of simulation when a complete chain of associated symbolic model symbols is updated. A displayed symbolic model can be interacted with to modify the model by altering the interconnections of the displayed symbolic model causing corresponding modification of the connections of other interconnected symbolic model symbols and their associated input/output memories.

  • Patent number: 6353419
Abstract: A microcell having a plurality of antennas attached to an upper portion thereof is arranged to move along an interior of a guyed latticework tower. As the microcell is being raised, the antennas are in a stowed position within the confines of the tower structure. When the microcell reaches the top of the tower, the antennas are deployed by deploying mechanisms which utilize the vertical upward motion of the microcell to produce outwardly directed movement of the antennas to a deployed position. In the deployed position, the spacing between the antennas is greater than the distance between adjacent stanchions of the tower structure. The deploying motion is accomplished without additional driving motors, but is instead produced by the upward movement of the microcell driven by a winch and cable arrangement.

  • Patent number: 6353668
Abstract: A method for enhancing the stability associated with an individual telecommunications line interface circuit comprises measuring a phase angle between a battery voltage and an output voltage. The phase angle measurement is processed by a digital signal processor for synthesizing a comparator circuit to generate an output voltage if the phase angle is a value other than forty-five degrees (45°). The new output voltage is then applied to the line interface circuit and the phase angle is recalculated to determine if it is a closer approximation of 45°. In an alternative embodiment, a database including a plurality of output voltage and electrical parameter values is stored in the digital signal processor and indexed by measured phase angles between the battery voltage and the output voltage. If a phase angle other than 45° is measured, the measured phase angle is used to obtain a new output voltage and electrical parameters from the database.

  • Patent number: 6353858
Abstract: Local area networks are dynamically connected to one another by a switching system only when there is a packet to be exchanged between the two local area networks, otherwise the local area networks operate as separate and independent local area networks. The switching system can concurrently interconnect multi-pairs of local area networks together. The overall capacity of the local area networks interconnected via the switching system is increased since the local area networks operate free of other local area networks except when directly exchanging packets with another local area network. The switching system comprises a space switching unit and switch interface units with each switch interface unit interconnecting an individual local area network to the space switching unit.

  • Patent number: 6353835
Abstract: In a data warehouse, materialized views are maintained to provide the latest versions thereof. A reader may initiate a reader session where a series of queries are issued against one or more of the views. However, an information inconsistency problem may arise when responses to the queries in the reader session are based on certain common underlying data in the views which is subject to an update by a maintenance transaction. To avoid the information inconsistency problem, each time when a maintenance transaction is performed to update a view, it is executed on a copy of the view, rather than the original view itself to which queries of on-going reader sessions are directed. After the maintenance transaction, the updated copy becomes the current version of the view to which queries of new reader sessions are directed.

  • Patent number: 6353896
Abstract: A technique for testing event driven software. In accordance with the technique, the source code of the event driven software is directly converted to an automation based model useful in verifying that the program code complies with the desired properties defined by the user. More particularly, the event driven system program code is translated into a target language for a particular model checker. Such a translation results in a model which contains statements directed at whether execution of the program code will affect the behavior of the event driven system. Thus, this model extraction process can be used as input to a logic model checker for determining whether event driven system complies with the desired correctness properties specified by the user. Advantageously, the model extraction process and application of the model checker occurs in a direct and dynamic fashion from the subject event driven system program code without the need for user intervention.

  • Patent number: 6353832
Abstract: The present invention provides various methods and apparatus for providing accurate estimates for point and range queries over two-dimensional rectangular data. However, the techniques of the present invention for rectangular data can be applied to data of other shapes, point data, or linear data. The present invention provides several grouping techniques for the approximating of spatial data. A method is disclosed for grouping a plurality of spatial inputs into a plurality of buckets. In one form of the present invention the plurality of spatial inputs, is grouped based on an equi-area partitioning technique. The equi-area partitioning technique can use the longest dimension of a bucket or bounding polygon as the criteria for splitting into further buckets or bounding polygons. An equi-count technique can also be used wherein the buckets are split using the highest projected spatial input count along a dimension as a splitting criteria. The bounding polygons may be minimum bounding rectangles.

  • Patent number: 6353927
Abstract: The present invention provides a method and apparatus for programming installed memory integrated circuits. A temporary connection is made between an external processor and a printed circuit board containing one or more installed memory integrated circuits and an on-board processor. At a suitable time, e.g., when the on-board processor is idle, the external processor takes control of the on-board processor and accesses the memory integrated circuits via temporary connections. In the disclosed embodiment, the control is caused by a held reset signal from the external processor to the on-board processor, which causes control signals from the on-board processor to the memory integrated circuit to enter a tri-state condition. Data is downloaded from the external processor to the memory integrated circuit while the external processor maintains control of the on-board processor.

  • Patent number: 6353851
Abstract: An arrangement for realizing asymmetric collaboration utilizes a “shared Web-top”, i.e., a work space, in which different in-document applications can run and be shared. Specifically, in one embodiment of the invention employed in asymmetric collaboration, documents to be collaborated on at different users' terminals are logically identical but structurally different. Indeed, one of the collaborators, for example, a customer service agent, may have access to information that should not be made available to others of the collaborators. This asymmetric collaboration is realized by assigning a unique logical name to each information entity. Then, changes in the entity captured by some detection technique, for example, the use of document polling or event handlers, are propagated along with the name of the entity to the collaborators, where they are processed only if the relevant named entity exists.

  • Patent number: 6353616
Abstract: A packet network employing a reservation-based protocol system includes routers having processing sections that schedule message processing of the protocol's control messages adaptively based on link utilization. A scheduler of the processing section employs a round-robin scheduling with adaptive weight assignment to allocate processing capacity for control messages. For the RSVP protocol, for example, messages are grouped in classes, and link utilization of the packet flows for each message class is monitored. Weights corresponding to a portion of the processing section's processing capacity are allocated to each message class. The weights are defined based on link utilization for the message class and average message queue length. For processing sections monitoring multiple links, weights are further defined for super-classes based on overall link utilization. Weights may change as link utilization and average message size changes.

  • Patent number: 6351730
Abstract: High-quality, low-complexity and low-delay scalable and embedded system and method are disclosed for coding speech and general audio signals. The invention is particularly suitable in Internet Protocol (IP)-based multimedia communications. Adaptive transform coding, such as a Modified Discrete Cosine Transform, is used, with multiple small-size transforms in a given signal frame to reduce the coding delay and computational complexity. In a preferred embodiment, for a chosen sampling rate of the input signal, one or more output sampling rates may be decoded with varying degrees of complexity. Multiple sampling rates and bit rates are supported due to the scalable and embedded coding approach underlying the present invention. Further, a novel adaptive frame loss concealment approach is used to reduce the distortion caused by packet loss in communications using IP networks.
